With so much traveling around, are we going to have some usefull camping gear??
I've read about backpacks being 'possibly' implemented but not much else on travel gear, which in Tolkiens world is importand because of the hostile terrain and large distances.
Because when the weather will affect your character, sleeping in the wilderness in the rain won't be very healty. (Could I catch a cold???? sick.gif )
I've got a bedroll in a mwmod i can take with me so I know its possible.
But what about extreme conditions??
-down filled sleeping bags that wil keep you warm and comfortable even on the highest mountains?
-Travellers coocking set with everything u need2eat, easy and light to pack?
-A tent??? may start with a bare piece of fabric to keep of the rain on the low-budget end, and a elvish spidersilk tent on the high budget, ultra light and able to keep you warm inside on a single candle? ( not to mention the perfect semi-magical camouflage?)
-And lots of other things you wil need to travel any distance further than 2 days walking.
It took the fellowship more than a year to go from the shire to mt doom if I read the books correctly, so we'll need some decent camping gear we can take with us.

I just wonder if I can get someone on the team to react on this, it would be my greatest wish to go backpacking around ME.

That's what you get for asking a wookiee... biggrin.gif

To Rob the mariner: I don't think you need to worry... From what little tidbits I've picked up they do have a nice system with many possibilities for all your resting-needs! I cannot tell you what, and I cannot tell you where, but I'm sure it will be good.
Slaiv
Hopefully you won't get eaten while you're asleep.
Illuvarin
Maybe you can buy a Winnebago-carriage WITH satellite AND barbecue shiftyph34r.gif

It would be nice of course to have a campinggear and such but if we implement such things we wouldn't have a beta till Elder Scrolls 5.

Slaiv
I believe this was discussed in a topic before, though I would have no idea what to search for to find it...

I seem to remember that you can buy tents, groundrolls, etc....

But that might have just been what people requested. I'll look it up, if I find it I'll post it here.

EDIT: The thread is located here.

For those of you too lazy to click, here's what Daerk said:

Camping has already been designed and is in implementation phases.

I think you'll like what we've designed.

heh and it is still being implemented curently many talented scripters have already contributed work (Greywolf Theta and a few more that slip my mind [Sorry guys quick responce you know who you are and your names are on the scripts]) unfortunatly due to the enviromental scripts that are in constant flux they cant be fully solidifyed till the enviromental base is finalised (or else im tracking rouge variables back through a heystack of code) but yeah much has been done and there is a bunch of scripts that even the teamsters havent had a chance to test out yet becouse of my time management (trying to get uni out of the way fast this semester) still greywolf and theta probably have some of the best working knowledge of there own contributions towards equipment and the general camping experience (they did submit them to me a while ago tho so maby it has sliped there minds smile.gif) but yeah im impresed with there work and I have high standards (also an apology to all the other scripters in the team who have been idle i promise ill get back too it asap) but yes soon as i get the "babbige room" operational things can steam ahead

(this turnd into more of a progress indicator than a coment on camping gear)

so umm yeah traveling gear good works well and umm ... stuff smile.gif

Interesting ideas about camping. It would certainly help the 'immersive' feel of roleplaying in Middle-Earth. One thing, however, is to note that tents were really only for soldiers on campaigns. They didn't make small, portable one or two man tents at this time. For one thing, all the braces/poles are wood. There simply isnt any way to have them be small enough to be portable by anything less than a wagon. I don't even believe a 'shelter half'/pup tent is even feasible. The weight alone would be a burden to anyone other than a dwarf. There is also the matter of cost....unless this game isnt going to resemble anything remotely like the economy of Middle-Earth. Better off to save your silver pennies for another spear.

Basically, you have your cloak and any blankets you have on you (unless you own a pony/mule/horse). You sleep out under the stars. Thats how The Fellowship did it. Thats how Thorin and Company did it...and they had ponies through the early part of their journey. nazgul.gif
Slaiv
Well what if you're a soldier on a campaign? tongue.gif

Anyway, if you get enough money, you could always have a horse/pack animal carry it for you.
Rob the mariner
i cant imagine a piece of cloth you sling over a branchoff to keep offthe rain weighing more than 4 kilos and limiting your movement, even something like a hide from a cow-sized animal can be used as a tent, and that aint too heavy

lol i did read his sig and in fact he is quite right, however i was just wondering if that sig was just a cover up for his bad spelling. (no offence Wookiee blush.gif )

note to Wookiee: please dont kill me for uncovering your deep dark secret. ph34r.gif help.gif bye2.gif

I doubt it. It's got to be something other than a cover up.

I have no idea where you get the idea that an A-Frame tent made out of pre-Nylon material is going to weigh a measely 4 kilos. Even a shelter half is going to weigh close to 4 kilos...and thats minus the other half as well as poles.

About the only ones that would have so called light weight tents would be the Elves (probably owing to either Noldor influence or perhaps the craft of Melian with regards to the Sindar). Its unlikely you will encounter one much less buy one as Elves do NOT use gold or silver as a medium of exchange (the only exception be Thranduil's Folk trading with the Dorwinrim for wine and such).

I'll say it again, you're much more likely to simply curl up in your cloak and a blanket or two. In wintertime you'll either sleep almost inside your campfire or you'll live inside.

As for semi-permanent camps like those used by bandits and so forth...most of them are in woodlands for ease of camouflage as well as for hunting and such. Of course, there are exceptions to every rule. nazgul.gif

He did not say an A-Frame tent, he said a piece of cloth to sling over a branch.
