How big is the Solar Sistem? How distant is the closest star, Alpha Centauri? And, in general, how large is the Universe?

Not having anything better to do, and being slightly masochist, I tried to make a representation - in scale - of the Solar Sistem, and I have tried to reach Alpha Centauri as well. All of that is in the text file I have attached to this post.

Scroll to the bottom and have fun...

Personally, when I try to visually imagine such distances, I stop thinking about my problems... Everything seems so small in comparison wink.gif

... and... yes, I should get a life wink.gif

P.S. = Scroll SLOWLY for the best effect... it'll certainly take much less than it took me to compile it, anyway! God bless copy & paste wink.gif

Congratulations Maquissar on your achievement of creating this wonderful visual diagram showing us how simple and insignificant we are....kinda makes me feel bad about myself...wow thats far... good job biggrin.gif

Hehehehehe, I suspect someone's acount has been hacked. CHOWN'd!

About the "graph" - Makes you wonder what purpose us little carbon lifeforms serve...
wesaynothin
Curse you Maquissar. Now my head hurts.

I HATE EARTH

*tries to reach Andromeda

Yer gd job man, you must have alot of patience.

The human race really does suck.... huh.gif wow, oh well.

*Goes back to life in general but with the added notion of insignificance*

Wow! Um. Very interesting but... seriously... get some help. biggrin.gif
Maquissar
Using copy and paste, it doesn't take THAT much time. All I did was to make
a reproduction of the Solar System (which took me quite some time): Pluto is at 5,900,000,000 km, to make it even I copied everything from the Sun to 6,000,000,000 km, pasted it, removed all the planet names, and then it was easy... just a matter of pressing CTRL+V slightly less than 100 times. Besides, I was bored wink.gif
Brighid
Very nice.
Really makes one feel insignificant.

I look at that stuff, and become a big fan of existentialism.

Now why dont we all just blow up the core of the earth will a lot of nuclear weapons and such, and then we see how far we can get on the chunks of this rock. I doubt we will even get out of the suns gravity. HAHAHAHAHAHAAHHHHHHHHHHHHAHHAHAAHHA
Slaiv
I look at that stuff and think, "Wow. You need a life." tongue.gif
Iluventi
I admire your courage as posting it biggrin.gif

Nah seriously, well done smile.gif

I believe the closest star, apart form the sun is, Proxima Centauri, a Red Dwarf orbiting in the Alpha Centauri system.
Maquissar
Well, yes, Proxima Centauri (Alpha Centauri C) is the closest star, but it's still -
I read - at 4.22 light years... besides, it's just a tiny red star 1/10th of the sun's mass... if it were only slightly smaller it'd be a gas giant smile.gif
dunmer_jediknight
good work on the graph. I liked it lol tongue.gif . As to those who said that you need a life ............................ they may have a point laugh.gif . just kidding smile.gif. Being a space nut myself I also have done this scale thing ( albeit on paper and only did the solar system) when I was a kid and had the time for that. Nowen days to keep my mind going with the mind numming job I have I have created my own SF Universe and to those who think Maquissar is nuts I have not only created my own races I also evolved them to explaine why and how they became a space faring race. I also made every attempt to keep everything as scientificly accerate as possible. So there is your next challenge Maquissar, just incase you get board agine lol.
Iluventi
Yeah.. I'm pretty damn interested about Astrophysics, and Cosmology.

But that is damn well done Maquissar, I applaud you!
