the best game has to be metal gear solid 1 for ps1..amazing!
nofoodordrinkinthelrc
i declare Morrowind the best , with FF7 close behind(ahh sweet Tifa). Deus Ex and HL2 are also good. Halo 2 is also fairly awesome. Hell the list is endless, there are so many good games. Any one played 'N',because it is without doubt the very best 2d game of all time!!!!!!!!!!All of you must bow before 'N'. Also not one the best things ever but quiet awesome, for Myst3 fans out there is another free game, Penumbra. Look it up it really is quiet good( Warning:It's a click and drag adventure.) It is also fairly scary. Finally, it may be a console game, but still merits a mention, Ninja Gaiden Black, for all that you have is sweet and glorious in Ninja Gaiden Black.

in this order

any final fantasy
oblivion
any tekken
morrowind
everything else

How can you say Oblivion? You haven't even played it. You're just being a TES fanboy. tsk tsk

Anyway,

Final Fantasy 6 is one of my favourites - mostly out of a sense of nostalgia, but I really enjoy the story, and I love the characters in it ( I find that it not having a central character is one of it's strong points - you aren't forced to emphasize with a character you don't like ).

The Soul Calibur series is without a doubt, the best fighting game series ever. I used to preach Tekken, but after playing SCII, Tekken seems slow and clunky. The arcade version is best though. (or just buy an arcade stick)

I enjoyed Morrowind, of course. I wish I had the attention span to sit down and mod it, but I don't. I don't even have the attention span to play most of my favourite games anymore (or new ones for that matter).

Can't forget Zelda 3 for SNES. Awesome game. Same with SMario 3.

Gah, I can't choose. I'm hungry.

Oblivion, i'm sorry to say, was a disapointment, and by the way Tekken is crap, DOA and Soul Calibur for the win. Also anything on SNES rocks, u know it's true

Pong... Just Pong..
Tiberiu911

My favorite game was KOTOR 1 for the storyline.

Followed by Morrowind for the storyline again.

I have yet to play FF7, it seems it has a good storyline.

I hate Oblivion's storyline. Pweassee, not the same feeling of importance as compared to Morrowind. But hey that is just my humble oppinion.

Super Mario Bros. any day, everyday. And I STILL HAVEN'T BEAT IT!
Dremora Cow
I think, for its time, Morrowind was the best game ever played. It even crushes about every game now. I would think of morrowind as a milestone for gaming. a milestone yet to be topped, however. But thats only coming from an RPG fan.

edit: i just realized this thread is 50years old, i dudt mean to revive it, but it seem to be pinned.

here is my pointless post.

it different to define what is best, you said its the most influential games. for me its the one that is most memoriable. half life was extremely influential for fps and cinematic gameplay, but too i couldnt stand to play it because the graphic makes me extremely headache and literally throw up after a while.

the one absolute best is Terranigma, a snes rpg game, because the story is very touching to me. The main character was very humble and suffer a lot, but in the end he has to die after saving the world. Okay that might sounc cliche, the way it was presented was memoriable. FF7 and Chrono Trigger comes very very very close.

yeah i have to say deus ex is close up. as for the one i would keep forever, Morrowind, not about the character customization, but the feeling it provoke. Oblivion doesnt even come close.

its easier to list best of a genre than the best overall.

Well, I agree some of these are rather memorable (Morrowind and Chrono Trigger are games I still play today), but I think what you have to understand that while these games did bring new concepts to the gaming world in general, they lack something a very select few games have: immortality. As I posted quite a while ago in this same thread, Super Mario Bros. STILL makes an impact on gamers today.

Even though Mario and Nintendo aren't quite what they used to be (all thnx to Microsoft and Sony dry.gif ... ), I know, for a stone-cold fact, that SMB is THE WORLD'S greatest game of all-time. Dispute this fact all you want, nothing will ever achieve what SMB did back in 1985. There was no other game (not even on the Commodore 64 OR Amiga) that could have done what SMB did.

SMB is the definition of what a "game" is: deceptively simple, not violent (at least by the way "violence" is defined wink.gif ) so everyone can play it, old and young alike, and above all, easily replayable, even after all these years. THESE are the things that make a game immortal. Never, not EVER, has one game since the release of SMB on the NES back in 1985 been able to achieve success quite like it. And THAT is a known fact.

As you can see to the left, my favourite game of all time is Loopin' Louie! It is a great game!
My favourite board game has got to be either Betrayal at House on the Hill (discontinued) or Descent: Journeys in the Dark.
My favourite video game is probably Baldur's Gate, Morrowind, or the game with the longest title ever, The Lord of the Rings The Battle for Middle Earth 2 expansion pack The Rise of the Wick-King...or lotr bfme2 rotwk for short
My favourite Atari game is Adventure. I beat it on all three difficulty levels!

Skies of Arcadia, is, in my arrogant opinion (I am in no way humble), one of the best games ever made . 40+ hours of gameplay, a huge world, gorgeous (for the time) graphics. It was, by far, the best game for the Dreamcast. After all, it had Air-piracy, huge ships, superweapons, 'splodes... A truly fantastic journey.

Woot! There is someone else out there that appreciates this game. biggrin.gif For me personally the two Shenmues beat Skies of Arcadia just barely on Dreamcast, but apart from that yeah, the best game on there. Sometimes I plug my old Dreamcast back in just to play it. ^^ It was just one of those games that did atmosphere really well, and at the time seemed like a pretty original concept for a game (though I daresay it was based off a Japanese anime concept of some sort). I actually felt engaged and involved in the world and story... which is becoming an increasingly rare thing these days. And that airship combat was great.

Yet, you hardly ever hear of it these days... the Dreamcast died (stupidly) and it got some half-hearted re-release with "Legends" stuck on the end for the least successful console in the last gen market... and that was it. I guess this is going to be one of those obscure gems that we reminisce about when we're 40 and people wonder what the heck we're going on about. tongue.gif

For me, the best is and will always be Grim Fandango. It has even been declared the best adventure game by PC-Gamer (both the English and the Swedish, mind you biggrin.gif ).

For me, nothing can, or will beat it. smile.gif

I am currently head over heels in Dawn of war: Dark crusade

I would strongly reccomend it to anyone, warhammer 40,000 fan or not

Well i have a tie between 3.My first would obviously be Morrowind. My second would have to be Star Wars EAW. Third is Turok 2.But those are my oppinions
The best game is probaly Final Fantasty 7

My favorite game has always been Battletoads and Double Dragon; great sidescrolling brawler/beat-'em-up, with your choice of the Dragon Twins or one of the 'toads. Each set of characters plays a little differently, just enough to give the game a different feel when playing as the Twins if you're used to being a toad. My only real gripe about this game is its near insane difficulty, but hey, it's a Battletoads game. If you can play it without popping an artery in sheer frustration, it's a great game, especially if you can find a like-minded person to play along with you.

I don't think this is the "best" game ever, though. The best game in terms of production values is likely Morrowind plus its expansions, simply due to the complexity of its story and the intricacy of Vvardenfell. I still stare in wonder at the poster I have on the wall, at how much detail was put into such a small continent. I really need to play this game again.

In terms of survivability over time, the best game is definitely Tetris. This game is still a favorite among people all over the world, even after all of these years.

I don't know what the most graphically advanced game of all time is, simply due to the fact that developers are constantly pushing the envelope with increasingly advanced graphics engines and better hardware. I haven't been doing well in keeping up...I should really get some new games, instead of dillying around with SNES cartridges. >.>
theNPC23b
I believe that the best games are Super Metroid (for general gameplay), Morrowind (for plot etc.) and aside from that, all the games you said that I've ever played.

Now that's a name I haven't heard in some time! happy.gif
The only bad part about it is that you get lost so easily. I don't know how many days it took for me to finish the first chapter. wacko.gif

Am I the only one who have ever played Grim Fandango? unsure.gif

Another game worth of mention is Quake and Quake II...

Turok: Dinosaur Hunter is my favourite from the Turok series... the other ones all got a bit too gory (well I was well under 15 at the time tongue.gif).

I never really knew Grim Fandango existed until I played a demo of it on a PC Gamer disk a few months back. Seemed pretty good but it kept crashing at a certain point, so I wasn't too encouraged about the stability of the full version. tongue.gif So I didn't really bother with it.

I WAS 7 lol

I need to try the 360 version. Looks pretty cool!!
The Hippie
just super mario bros deluxe (i finally beat it)
Karasuman
Kind of a four-way tie between FFX, Perfect Dark (the real one on N64), Morrowind, and Castlevania Aria of Sorrow. SOTN is right up there, but I still think AOS is the best Castlevania game ever made.

Perfect Dark is simply the greatest stress-relief game ever produced. I still play it occasionally when I feel the need to hurt something (without going to jail).

FFX frankly has the best (and most depressing) story of any game I've played. All those games are my faves for their own reasons.

As far as influence, I'd have to fully dispute the claim that SMB is the king of vid game influence. There is precisely one game that I believe has had more of an effect on videogames than SMB, and that game is Pac-Man. To me, Pac-Man is the undisputed king of video games, even over SMB. SMB is still in the royal family to be sure, but without the success of Pac-Man, there would be no such thing as video games, and to this day, it remains the highest-grossing arcade game of all-time.
dyfed_99
Apart of TESIII and TESIV I liked very much Hidden & Dangerous II & NOLF2. But also CoD and MoH series with both Dungeon Siege. And in the past Panzer General series (very much) with WoW II and Throne of Darkness plus a lot of strategical ones.

Sorry, it seems I've mistaken. This topic is for other systems games. Is it?
ninja_lord666
A game I really like is Baldur's Gate 2 Shadows of Amn and the expansion Throne of Bhaal. The story line is absolutely great. For this last couple of weeks, all I wanted to do was play that game. Even now, after I beat it, I still want to play. Also, ToB got the award for the best expansion of 2001, and I concur. The story is great, and you get a real sense of choice (mainly because, in the end, you do have a huge, life altering choice). Also, the game and especially expansion, you actually can be evil (it helps that the game is focused around the player having to deal with the fact that s/he is the child of the dead god Bhaal, the former Lord of Murder). There are some parts that seem almost impossibly difficult, but overall, I love the game. It is the god of all rpgs.
Also, another aspect that adds to not only the rpg effect, but also the realism: romance. As strange as that may sound, there are several npcs in the game who you can have relationships with. This makes the player seem all the more human (ironic as the player is part god tongue.gif ). Also, the relationship isn't those perfect feel-good types of relationships found in tv or movies; they're more. I've only done two so far, but they both ended in her breaking up with me for one reason or another. (Viconia said it wouldn't work, which I believe her. I'm a half-elf and she's a drow. Aerie is whiny. I don't really know what she had against me.) In the expansion, the relationships continue despite them 'ending' in SoA (unless you screwed it up at some point). Which brings me to my next point: watch out what you say to them! some things will end the relationship. Period.

I'm sorry this was so long, but I just love the game. Play it! You'll thank me.
(You kind of need to play Baldur's Gate before this so you can get the full story. It isn't required, but things will make more sense.)

Company of Heroes is the best game I ever played. It really feels as if you're in the front line... And I've always liked the comments of the units: "Hans, they are scratching your paintjob" (if a tankhunter attacks a tigertank) or: "If a mouse farts in this [censor]minefield, I want his ass blown sky high!"

But when Opposing Fronts hits the stores, I think that will become my fav game

Unreal Series

Now THAT'S a word I haven't heard in quite some time. Among the best games I've ever played. And the only game series that made it hard for me to sleep at night....

...I still remember the lights slowly going off, and hearing the distinct sound of a Skaarj warrior... ph34r.gif
cyronarxes
Gothic 1 and 2 without a doubt was two of the finest games to exist. Those two games are classics. They were and still are a masterpeice of art to me. However do not judge the gothic series on gothic 3., that was a monstrosity and disgrace to the gothic series
arrenmog
my top 10 are....................

1. Timesplitters 2
- Amazing, addictive, fast paced multiplayer with mapmaker can be played for hours. also the impossible hard mode is an impossible challenge

2. Oddworld: Abe's Oddesy & Exodus
- Classic games that had good graphics for its time. and the fun of killing your fellow mudukons in extremly violent ways when you were supposed to save all 300. plus the fun of taking control of sliggs, scraps and paramites

3. The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion
- probably the most played game i own, and along with mods add pretty much unlimited gameplay.

4. Star Wars: Battlefront 1 & 2
- the best gameplay system ever devised, completely original and makes you feel as if your team depends on you. i think they should make a No. 3 with 256 on each team at a time instead of the current 16, because they probably could with the power of consoles and computers today

5. All The Gran Turismos'
- i think, the deffinitive racing game. always with superior graphics to all its competitors and more realistic controls. also when GT5 is released it will have the Top Gear Test Track on (something ive allways wanted.

6. Trackmania: United
- A highly: addictive, manic, insane, fast paced, fun, skillful racing game with unlimited play online. the good thing is online is free

7. Rayman (The Original)
- a fun light hearted game that, when i tried to play the other day, was alot harder than i rememberered it to be

8. Tekken 2,3,TagTeam & 5
- just plain good, excellent infact, beat em ups and i hate anyone who says street fighter is better because its just not. also once i stayed up all night drinking apple Schnappes and playing Tekken 2.

9. The Elder Scrolls: Morrowind
- Only got it this tuesday but im allready hooked, i may edit this later and move it up my list when ive gotten into it abit more.

10. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
- theres something enjoyable about going on a rampage killing everyone in a shopping center with a mixed arsenal of weaponry. i think this is the best GTA as 3 wasn't good enough, san andreas was too much about rubbish gang wars, and 1,2 & London were just pooe.

You may notice most of these are PlayStation titles, thats because i have sony running through may veins since playing Tekken 2 at the age of 3 i have learnt to master every genre for it and i hope soon to get myself a PS3.

3. Call Of Duty 4
3/4. Oblivion
5.World of Warcraft / Lord Of The Rings Online
meaminotaur
id say that maybe gears of war, call of duty 4, oblivion for pc and wow test realms are a 4 way tie
top 10 games are probably
2. assasins creed
3. portal (orange box)
4. halo 3
5. maybe farcry
6. lord of the rings battle for middle earth 2
7. battlefield 1942
8. zelda ocrinia of time

10. lost planet
meaminotaur

Abramul
I note that NetHack has not received a mention.
CCJ
Oblivion, COd4, Timeshift, Crysis and Medal Of Honor: Airborne. FPS FTW! Oblivion is an exception though, it doesn't really belong to the FPS genre but it's still a fantastic game nonetheless. Just like the evolved version of WoW!

My new favourite is Planescape: Torment. I just finished it. Wow!

This thread isn’t so much “your favorite”, but “the best of all time”. Having said that, I believe that the best game is probably how influential the game was as a whole, on the gaming genre. While the first “Super Mario Bros.” might be one of the most memorable games ever, with its little jingles that stuck in your head hours / days after playing, to how easy anyone of any age could pick it up (and the fact that Mario is immortal as far as games go), I find it not to be the best made. And as gamers get older, new games come into the mix who’ve never played it and many of those never will.

But one of the most influential games in history was “Doom”. Doom took Wolfenstine 3D and made it into a platform that has sense been duplicated and rehashed over and over again, countless times. Any FPS of today has its roots in Doom, not to mention just about any game that lets you play and move about freely in first-person. I actually never made it through Doom without cheating (the last stage was designed with cheating in mind, I’m convinced – especially on “nightmare”).

I feel that if you’re trying to go “best game” based on how well it was received and how well you feel it has / will stand up to the test of time, I would have to say “Portal”. The entire game is only 1 – 2 hours long, and after you beat it, you feel a good sense of accomplishment. Portal delivered everything you’d expect, and had some of the best dark humor around. True after a while, the replay value drops, but that’s the same as any game, and the fact you can play the full game in one seating means it doesn’t outstay its welcome or get too monotonous or boring.

P.S:
My favorite games of all time are “Super Metroid”, for its emersion and “Zelda: a link to the past”, for taking the Zelda franchise to a new level and not trying to overdo it.
GenghisKhanIT
Mentioning only one is impossible, I would say at least two:

- The secret of Monkey Island
- Doom

The best game ever...probably Suikoden 2...incredible story, characters, enemy's and incredible runes with awesome effects...

Ok, so I'm older than dirt. I remember losing a few weekends to Doom on my brand spanking new Micron 100 Mhz Pentium f'n ONE pc. That was the game that made me a gamer. That game taught us what it was all about. It was the turning point from text MUDS to real graphic games where the immersion wasn't just a way to show you where you were in the map, but a real part of the game that gave it such an emotional impact.

Not the "best" by a long shot, but Doom was the turning point from game to gaming.
