What is the best game that you have ever played

i started playing game s att he age of 6, 11 years of exp. under my belt.

best game ever Final Fantasy 7
Hir_Nesta
I'm with you

Final Fantasy VII
and
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Switch
Well, I've been playing video games since... I think it was 7, so 9 years here tongue.gif

Best game ever? Hmmm... that's a toughy. I could say the best of each genre of game perhaps. But out of all of em? That's hard. tongue.gif

Ok... Morrowind and Final Fantasy XI for me. Yes it's two but I can't decide between them.

FFXI has next to no storyline though. For the game with the best storyline ever for me would probably be FFX/IX, once again, can't decide.

There are so many aspects that make some games better than others it's a bit hard to generalise it so much wink.gif
Slaiv
I know Darkone just posted not to attempt to do the moderator's job, but seing as a moderator didn't do it, it looks like I have to. tongue.gif

"Best RPGs of All Time"
"Favourite Games, Other Than Morrowind?"
"Favourite Games, Choose Wisely"
"Anyone Play Other Games?"

Just a heads up - I know you're new, but try to use the search function from now on. happy.gif
Darnoc
@Slaiv: But isn't this thread a little different from those you mentioned? This thread asks the question, which is the best game of all times and this can be discussed.

The other threads you mentioned ask different questions, like the best RPG's or what is the favourite game of a person. So it seems to me that the question here is different, since you can discuss acctually why something is better, while the threads you mentioned only asked to state what you think is better, not discuss it.

Half-life or Deus Ex.

If you disagree, then you are clinically insane.

It's true.

Arrow_Diet
For once, I agree with Valdir.
You're clinically insane if you don't love Deus Ex or Half-Life ( can't wait for #2!!!)

FFIX would be my 3rd choice though... It's kindof a toss up for the first two places.

EDIT: 11 years of exp more me too...
Darnoc
I disagree strongly. (now the discussions start)

Why this? Deus Ex and Half-Life are good games, they are even some of the best games, but they certainly do not deserve the title of the best game ever.

The question for the best game ever is difficult in itself. It would be easier to answer this by genres and not the best game of all games. Or when the question would be "what is the most important and influential game?". That would clealry be one of the following games: Command and Conquer, Civilization, Doom, Wing Commander, Quake, Descent, Baldur's Gate, Myst, StarWars: Rebel Assault (because it was the first game to fully use the capabilities of the CD-ROM).

But the best game... well, there are several games which are nominated for this award, I think.

- "Myst" is certainly one, just because of it's simple genious; "Riven" perfected the already good "Myst"

- I would agree on "Baldur's Gate 2" being the best RPG of all times, where the "old" 2-dimensional RPG was perfected. Worth mentioning and considerable are also "Fallout", "Planescape: Torment" and "Diablo 2". For the 3d-RPG's I would nominate both "Morrowind" and "Gothic II: Die Nacht des Raben".

- "Civilization 2: Test of Time" and "Age of Empires 2" are probably the best strategy games of all times. OK, I would also consider "WarCraft 3", "StarCraft", "Sudden Strike", "Comand & Conquer: Tiberium Dawn", "Command & Conquer: Red Alert" and "Stronghold". "Rome: Total War" is probably the coming best strategy game and will top them all, at least when it holds to its promises.

- Now it is the Action-Games turn. What shall I nominate here? "Quake", "Unreal Tournament", "Counterstrike", "Half-Life".

- Space-simulations, yes. "WingCommander", "Freespace 2", "Freelancer", "Descent" (one of my favourites, especially the much underrated Descent 3), Privateer

OK, this is my nomination list. Feel free to add biggrin.gif

Now, who wins? Let's look by genre:

Adventure: Riven
RPG: Baldur's Gate 2
Strategy: Age of Empires 2
Action: Counterstrike
Space-Simulation: WingCommander

Now, who wins in the end? OK, lets look. Riven is really cool, but it has the flaw that you can play it only once and then you know it all. Counterstrike gives you endless gaming, because it is always different, the enemies are human. Problem is, the principle of the game stays the same, there isn't much variety there. Age of Empires is cool in the Net, but suffers from the same problem as Counterstrike. WingCommander was the first of its Genre and one of the best series in game history. As a plus, it had a good story. Multiplayer is something that lacks tough. Baldur's Gate is the perfected RPG, which you can almost play endlessly until you are through once. The cool thing about is that you can play it again and again and always do something new. When we take 200 hours to play the game once, and you have about ten different classes, well, that gets you 2000 hours of gameplay. Quite a lot, don't you think?

That is also the reason why I say, Baldur's Gate is the best game of all time. At least from an objective point of view, or at least partial objective view.

Subjectivly, I would name an other game, or should I say "games". Outcast is one of my favourites, then there is Descent 3, Arcanum (just because of the genious story), Planescape: Torment (for the same reason), Battlezone (because of it's genious combination of Strategy and Action), Gothic I and II (I just love those RPG's, because of their unique living world)

Please tell me you're joking... that sounds like a nomination for WORST game ever. I know you're not old enough to understand this, but an offensive game is not a good game just because it is offensive. Come back when you grow up.

...best strategy......"StarCraft"...

How can you use that phrase with the game StarCraft?

Everyone I see playing it *cough*FlightlessBird*cough* just builds up a massive army and rushes. (particularlly in the begining)

Rise of Nations is has way more strategy because it uses a flanking system.

As for good games...

Mechwarrior/commander series.

rant

This would be a valid response if this thread was in the "Debates" section, but it isn't.

Our answers are based on our opinions. My opinion(shared with A_D apparently) is that Deus Ex and Half-life are the best games ever. If I was asked to support my opinion(which I really shouldn't have to) with "why" then I would say this:

Deus Ex- I like the cyberpunk 'future but not too far into the future' setting, the characters like Alex Jacobson and Jock, the high replay value as there were multiple ways to get through a given situation (save 1 or 2 situations) and the level design (the undersea base, forgot the name, being one of my favorites). Plus, the storyline was brilliant.

Half-Life- the multiplayer, mods mostly, were great and fresh (for the time). I spent countless hours playing the 2fort map in Team Fortress Classic. The singleplayer was just as brilliant as the multiplayer.

There wasn't much to it, just go from one area to the next and kill everything in between, but the way it was presented was spectacular.

It was seamless, for the most part with quick 3 second loading times in between maps, but sometimes I got such a feeling of lonliness when I was up against a million marines and had like, 10 bullets left. Then there was a good feeling when I came upon a room filled with ammo.

Both games offer great experience, but Darnoc, don't try and prove are opinions wrong, because they are exactly that, OPINIONS.

I just got a copy of Doom3 today and it is now my favorite game of all time... it's seriously the scariest game I have ever played in my life. Plus the graphics are absolutely breath taking.
UberBender
Doom 3 is out?

*runs out into the street*

"WOOO WHOOOOO!!"

what kind of specs do you need to run it? (well)
surian
Technically Doom3 Isn't out until Aug. 4th in the US but I have my ways (usenet)... not exactly shall we say... legal? But I don't care because I am going to buy the game anyway in a couple days, I just couldn't resist the early test hehe. They deserve our $$$, they made an amazing game and I'm more than willing to buy it.

I have it running on High settings at 1024x768 (low resolution still looks amazing... it's weird, i thought i was at 1200x1024 at the lowest until I checked) also I have 2xAA on and I have no problems whatsoever, in fact I could easily get it going much higher than that but I havn't tested it yet.

My system is pretty good though, Athlon64 3200+ ATI 9800pro128Mb 1Gig Ram. I had a friend install it on his machine to see the difference, he has an AthlonXP 3000+ 9700pro128Mb and 1Gig Ram and was able to get it to run at my specs with ease (hence my guess that I could pump it up a bit more.

Icefiddell
Well i started when i was 3 on my dads Sega Mega Drive on Sonic the Hedgehog, WOW what a game and what a Machine biggrin.gif

Anyway my favourite game would probably be Final Fantasy 7 and a game called Enemy Zero for the Sega Saturn (Brilliant Console biggrin.gif) the game terrified me as a kid. Way ahead of it's time. Gotta love the classics.
Mamo
ummm....you guys forgot about xenogears and star ocean 2

Very good choice, but Mother 1(japan and emulation only) for the NES was the bomb!! Then when Mother 2 (Earthbound) it was even better. If you don't have an emulation for any of those games get one!
wraithguard01
For PC...Anybody heard of Freespace 2? It's a fly-around-in-a-space-ship-and-blow-the-crap-out-of-people type of game. I played a little bit of it at a friends house, and wow... the things you can do in your space ship... I barely had time to finish the tutorials before I had to go home. That's the best computer game I have ever played.

~For XBOX... ~Morrowind (or ~Halo 2, I don't know, I kind of got tired of playing it after I did nothing but that for several days in a row)

~For GameCube... ~SSBM Super Smash Bros. Melee. That game is the most addictive game for GC. I have to have played at least twenty bajillion hours on that. grin.gif (Wrote my own gameguide for it too... PM me with questions...cool.gif)

For PS2... Don't have one, but I think that the Final Fantasy Series is pretty cool...

~For GBA...~Mario & Luigi Superstars. Nuf said.

Old Skool...

~For NES... Duck Hunt. smiley.gif

~For SNES... ~Super Mario World. That game is... Yeah, nuf said...

~For Sega... ~Sonic

~= I own this

Started with a SNES when I was...........8. Which means I have 8 years experience.

Go play the rest. Buy a copy for yourself if you have to, or just download it if you've got the connection speed. It's one of the greatest games in history.
Chaosmaker
Best game ever in my opinion Halo 2 hand's down. Got to love the marine's. Plus there's probally gonna be oblivion so that may end up on my future favorite's list.
CLB1110
Chrono Trigger. Stunning Graphics (at the time), awesome musical score, flawless battle system, memorible characters, and an awesome storyline. Truly a masterpiece!
Bullet_shrapnel
No one has mentioned Deus Ex yet? Shocking. Compelling storyline, FPS and RPG elements rolled into onto package and a great deal of choice over your actions. Trumps everything else I've ever played hands down.

[/quote]

Right then, since I had taken a good five or so minutes to yell obscenities at the wall, i can consider these GOD DAMN RIDICULOUS IDEAS WHAT THE HELL WERE THINKING ideas of yours. Ahem.

Firstly, I have no objections with Darnoc's candidate of Civ II: ToT. I haven't played that version of the Civ games but I think they have some merit. What I object to is being told that AoE II is anything approaching a good game. I owned all of the AoE titles up to the latest ones - Age of Myths, whatever it's called. I don't anymore - I poured ligher fluid on the discs and burnt them. There is no strategy, whatsoever, involved in the playing of those games. It is a "build and rush" game, plain and awful. There are no ideas of tactics, unit strengths and weaknesses beyond the most obvious (and even these can be ignored quite easily), and no concept of, ah yes, a flanking system.

On to Rise of Nations, a game which is, essentially, AoE with a lot more epochs. I am also 99% certain that it is built with the same AoE engine. If Rise of Nations does use a flanking system i have certainly never had to use it. The same "build and rush" system has been copied and pasted into RoN, only with more "build, research, then rush".

If you would like to know what a decent game of strategy is, go and get Rome - Total War, and, if your strategy standards are as low as your game choices suggest, be blown away. I will not even begin to go into detail about the greatness of Rome because my fingers would drop off before i ran out of things to say. Suffice to say, the tactic system goes slightly beyond "flank to win".

BTW: Sorry if i sound overly harsh in this post, but i honestly can't understand why you would say these things if you have alrady played RTW. If you havent, then i can understand your unenlightened views somewhat.

And as for my best game ever, its a toss-up between RTW, Morrowind, HL2 and Deus Ex. And Eve Online if we can include online games.

Anything on the Source engine. (Half-Life 2, Counter-Strike Source)
CLB1110
Anything on the source engine eh? How about Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines. Not the best but a damn good game.
Morbid_Pathologist
Vampire the Masquerade had so many problems...looked so much worse than HL2 yet it ran slower, and took SO DAMN LONG TO LOAD, gave up on it with 3 minute load times.

PC - Command And Conquer (Refered to as Tiberian Dawn)

X-Box - Ninja Gaiden (or) SNK vs Capcom : SVC Chaos
DOS - Crusader : No Remorse/No Regret

GBA - Bomberman Tournament

NeoGeo - King Of Fighters 2002 (or) Metal Slug 4 (or) Last Blade 2

Sega Megadrive - I forgot the name, but you collect these rings, and you can equip them to do these cool attacks, there would be fire/ice rings and stuff, it was just the best...now i lost it... undecided.gif

Dreamcast - Giga Wing (insane 2d vertically scrolling shooter)

Age of Empires

Starcraft

Ok, in my several years of gaming experience, here are the winners, at least for me.

Best Modern Open-Ended RPG: Arcanum; Fallout.
Best Modern Rather Linear RPG: Morrowind.
Best Abandonware RPG: Darklands.
Best Console RPG: Final Fantasy VII.
Best Turn Based Strategy "Lite": Civilization II.
Best Turn Based Strategy: Europa Universalis II.
Best Real Time Strategy: Rome: Total War with the Total Realism mod.
Just Quite Fun To Play: The Sims II.
Would Be Great If It Only Would Work: Sim City 4.
Sounds Stupid But Is Actually A Good Strategy Game: Star Trek: Birth of the Federation.
Best First Person Shooter: Call of Duty.
Best Multiplayer First Person Shooter: America's Army.
Best Political Simulation: Shadow President.
Best Political Simulation That Frustrates You Because You Cannot Really Win, No Matter What You Do, Or At Least I Think So: Hidden Agenda.
Best Interactive Fiction: Galatea.
Best Way To Spend Entire Afternoons Without Having To Think: Bubble Bobble.

By the way, about Freespace 2, I downloaded it (it's Abandonware) but it doesn't really work for me. The speech is missing, as a result the captioning goes too fast to be read, and you end up not really knowing what you have to do.
Peregrine
Does it give you any error messages? Are you sure you downloaded a good copy of it? Or, if all else fails, and you've got the connection speed for it, I could always send you .isos of the game cds.

No error messages that I noticed, it's a CD-rip version that I downloaded from Home Of The Underdogs... Thanks for your offer, but I am in France at the moment and only using shared computers... I'll be back to Italy by the end of June, I'm gonna try and make it work once I get back smiley.gif
SeanMue
Would have to be Shenmue, the first time I put Disc 1 in it was like being taken into another world. I really got wrapped up in the story and acted like it was real life, like sometimes walking instead of running through Dobuita because running would look strange tongue.gif

Also really getting involed with the characters, the game's story is just amazing. Then Shenmue II came along and that game world just blew away the first Shenmue's. I really felt like a stranger in a whole new world, I didn't know where to go, didn't know anything about the people I was meeting either. I soon built trust with characters as the story went on smiley.gif

Then it all came to an end in a cave in Guilin, that was three or four years ago now, been waiting since then for Shenmue III. Although Shenmue Online was shown off last year so hopefully that'll get the series going again.

I like Halo 2. The game is about good focus and test on how to use combat skills.
I have nothing else to say about it. Its just focusing and about using combat skills. (Although some people might say its about something else, focusing and combat is how the game looks to me)

D@N, how can you place Halo2 before Halo??? Thats like sacrelige. Without Halo there wouldnt have been a Halo2, besides, Halo kicks Halo2's butt anyday of the week. I actually bought an Xbox just for Halo, and I sold my Xbox cause of Halo2.

Alright, I have to agree with Stanhead about MGS. But my runners-up are few and far between.

Fav FPS(console): Perfect Dark for N64
Fav FPS(Comp): AvP2
Fav TPS: MGS for PS1(dont know if this counts as a TPS)
Fav RPG: Dont remember the name, but this game basically sucked, I hated it, but somehow grew somewhat fond of it over the 5 Days I had rented it. Some game where you control Mech's, like a turn based crap type've thing
Fav Classic: This is a toughy, I would have to say... Drum roll please... Kid Chameleon for Sega Genesis(not exactly a classic, but as classic as I get)

How can you say Oblivion? You haven't even played it. You're just being a TES fanboy. tsk tsk

Anyway,

Final Fantasy 6 is one of my favourites - mostly out of a sense of nostalgia, but I really enjoy the story, and I love the characters in it ( I find that it not having a central character is one of it's strong points - you aren't forced to emphasize with a character you don't like ).

The Soul Calibur series is without a doubt, the best fighting game series ever. I used to preach Tekken, but after playing SCII, Tekken seems slow and clunky. The arcade version is best though. (or just buy an arcade stick)

I enjoyed Morrowind, of course. I wish I had the attention span to sit down and mod it, but I don't. I don't even have the attention span to play most of my favourite games anymore (or new ones for that matter).

Can't forget Zelda 3 for SNES. Awesome game. Same with SMario 3.

Gah, I can't choose. I'm hungry.
the_ragnarok702
Ah yes lets get the old list out:

Well I would first of all like to state that the games I list are only my top 5 favorites. The ones that fall after are pretty much the same to me its just so hard to come up with favorite games and not leave classics out.

Anyways,

1. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64)
2. Chrono Trigger (SNES)
3. Final Fantasy 4 (SNES)
4. Final Fantasy 5 (SNES)
5. The one and only Elder Scrolls III Morrowind (PC)

The honorable mentions that come to my mind include games such as Mario 64, The Neverhood, Final Fantasy 9, Final Fantasy 6, Super Smash Brothers, Super Smash Bros Melee, The Legend of Zelda : Majora's Mask, Age of Empires II and Diablo II.

Yes I would certainly say that Oblivion will fit it's self into that top five list once I get my hands on it.

Yeah!!! Ocarina of Time! Link to the Past! NO 3 Rocks! Marios are cool. morrowind rocks. Metroids rock apart from no1, Thats just impossible! Tales of symphonia. Nintendogs is sooooooo adictive.
