I disagree, not ALL anime sucks. Go watch Cowboy Bebop, that is an amazing piece of work. Very little of the idiotic comedy that anime is so full of, great animation rather than the usual crap and an absolutly astounding story line that will really make you think once you've seen the whole series (26 episodes). Highly reccomended

I will say that shows like Dragonball Z are crap. But those are almost a different brand of anime from Cowboy Bebop.

Umm, that's kind of the definition of anime. Japanese cartoons. The definition of Japanese Cartoon is Anime. All animes are Japanese cartoons. That's kind of the point. Anyway:
Cowboy Bebop rules. Trigun rules. Mononoke Hime rules. Hellsing rules. The Vision of Escaflowne [series] rules. That is all.

Hmm, well I would have disagreed a few years ago, but now I've grown out of all that cr@p like Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh I somehow agree. But not ALL of it sucks.

I've watched a few episodes of Cowboy Be-bop and that seems just about watchable. Escaflowne was damn nice animation wise, though some of the dialogue may have been a bit corny it was still very good.

Gundam Wing... I'm a bit undecided. The animation was very cheap really with the same bits looped over and over in battle sequences, but the storyline was pretty good. I really couldn't work out WTF some of the characters were meant to be doing sometimes though. It was unclear in that respect...
Basically, I don't think ALL of it sucks, but I agree some of it does, very much so.

even though pokemon and yugioh are considered childish there is no question that some of the animations surpass that of the average cartoon. even though there are a few uber childish animes all that anyone has seen here is probly about 5% of all that is anime. most are actually hardcore intense fighting animations and will not ever make it to us shores wether because of the rating or just because there is too much anime to go around. kiren apparently you havent sat up to watch Cartoon Network late at night. thats when the MILD anime comes on, and it seems hardcore by american standards. you can also stay up and watch TechTV's Anime Unleashed. a few of these animes are deeply emotional or rely on heavy mechanised or widescale semi-cg ultrabattles. but still, these dont even scratch the surface of how hardcore anime can go. google 'hentai' if you want an elevator straight to the waist of the mountain. or on a lighter note, go to Japan and see how anime is actually part of the culture there, and how its influences in tv, video games (props to the greatest RPG series of all time, Final Fantasy), clothing (who doesnt want to dress like the dude from trigun?), and music (J-pop > u).
*sigh* It's like a battle. I'm almost out of breath, out of verbal bling, out of thoughts. If I think of any more I can bring to the table I will.
Anything that is great is bound to be put down, but why on earth would anyone want to take on such a huge topic and not have but a one liner opening at that? Kiren, would you like to be introduced to my sig?

I agree though, Anime is such a huge topic that you can't really just say "Anime Sucks" you have to narrow it down a bit. There is a BIG difference between Dragonball Z and Trigun or Cowboy Bebop.

I myself am a big fan of anime. Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, any of Hayao Miyazaki's movies (Mononoke Hime, Spirited Away, etc...), and especially some less known ones. Movies like Samurai X, and TV series like GTO, Naruto, Kenran Butoh Sai, and Beserk. Some are funny and kind of childish, but if nothing else, the animation makes up for it. Beserk and Samurai X are much more serious, and are actually considered more of a mature anime. Cartoons for grownups I 'spose.

since when was Cowboy Bebop supposed to blow you away into laughter? Its an action series. If you want funny, watch Love Hina or Excel Saga or Tenchi or something. God, even Lupin The Third would suffice. Cowboy Bebop is still really good, regardless. People who cant see that have no view for art.
Most anime is action as it is. beyond that, a lot of it is very childish/cutesy. A small cut is pure comedy, since most of it is more of a fusion, say from a drama or action with a comedy aspect. Think Trigun. Thats an action series, but it has humorous parts. Cowboy Bebop had humorous parts too.
and, if you cant see the depth of art in a single anime title (The ones produced by For kids productions excluded), then I suggest you bite a bullet right now, because a rembrandt would be harder for you to understand.
AND, by the way, its "Cowboy Bebop", NOT "Cowboy Beep Bop".

I miss the original Dragon Ball.

It started out as a comedy series with some small action to break the constant laughing, but then it kindof diluted it self and now it's all action with some small comedy to break the constant explosions.
I'm not saying I don't like action anime, because Trigun is the bomb, but I like comedy also....

No kidding, but have you seen that new sub-genre that's becoming popular now? I don't know what people call it, but it's "like" anime, except drawn and written in a different country, keeping animeish characteristics in mind.
Example one (and a poor one): Totally Spies
It's SUPOSSED to be anime, but it's very obvious that american writers are targetting young (american) girls. The main problem I have with it is it's stupid humor and the fact that it goes with the mouth stereotype of anime (I.E. The characters look like they're yawning when they talk.)
Example two: Code (BLAH BLAH BLAH, I can't remember... starts with an L) Looks French based. Has that "gothic anime" look to it. It's weird though... You can't figure out the story unless you've seen EVERY FREAKIN' EPISODE!!
Any way... Is there any one show that people feel is timeless? Classic? The best?
I'm Dragon Ball (the original) ALL THE FREAKIN' WAY!!!

Agreed.
If I wanted to watch two men fly around, grunt, moan and punch eachother with superhuman stength I'll watch the Matrix Revolutions. [/not funny]
Although I kind of enjoyed Akira, but since I never even
heard of the comic /manga before I saw the movie, I didn't fully understand it. The part where Tetsuo is hallucinating and his innards plop out is grand, though. Then the few seconds after that shows him desparetly trying to put his phantom guts back inside his body.
What a strange movie...
Granted, I did watch Dragon Ball Z religiously back in 4th grade, along with Pokemon... which I still admit is the best money making idea in a while. How many games are there? 20something?
If you're bored and want a cheap laugh, watch Yu-gi-oh. Christ, what a load of poorly done crap.

I said Dragon Ball, the series where Goku was a little kid with a tail, THAT was funny for real. Had almost NOTHING to do with action. What happened most often was that Goku would do the whole "power pole extend" stuff and the bad guy would fly into the wall (with out a dramatic atomic bomb explosion.)
Well, whatever..

i think we can all agree that American 'anime' is lo qual crap. its just a sorry emulation of the real thing.
the beyblade thing only came about to show how the Japanese will take anything and turn ir into a fad. they yearn for individuality and some of these off the wall animes represent the differing hobbies, and twists on things, that these people adore and cherish as their own. plus you really dont want to ship an uber chiche anime to the americas.
since we're stepping into the comedic side of anime now, i'd like to bring to your attention the new Duel Masters series. yes it seems like just another in the sea of monster collective crazy kid shows. but this one, particularly the writing, make it boldly unique from others of the same genre. i dont even think they tried to translate half of the Japanese text! some of the characters drop their subject matter at hand to question their own cliche(ness).
for example you know how most of the time characters just burst out in maniacle laughter? well another character might mutter, "man that guy's a wierdo" or if someone is sweating real hard and theres that 'still frame' moment we all see in anime, she might think "mmm, why am I sweating? its only a card game. why does everything have to be so dramatic?" or he might just look down and ask a friend "you ever wonder why we're always wearing these gloves?"
the duel masters series is easily the most comedic anime series i've ever seen.

Cowboy Bebop. Probably the most classic anime available. Awesome story, awesome animation and art, awesome characters, good action.....
Trigun is probably my favourite. Great combination of comedy, action, and drama.

I completely forgot to mention two of my favorite animes.
Cowboy Bebop just has this smooth style to it, which I enjoyed. I would totally pay the $30 to buy both DVD sets if I had the cash.
One other anime I enjoyed(despite its American origins) is the Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Fury DVD. It's just a small half hour anime that takes place after Pitch Black. Nothing huge, but I enjoyed an animated Vin Diesel being a badass.

Oh I was checkin out an 'anime' called Megas XLR, and i know how i was bagging on american animes earlier, and i retract that statement. this one actually DOESNT try to emulate every aspect of anime. the shiny surfaces, attack motion lines, and somewhat anime style eyes, also the fact that its in the anime block of CN make it enough of an anime to be called american anime. but on the flip side this one actually TRIES NOT to be another cheap anime clone. it takes on a whole different attitude towards the genre, the character personalities, and the storyline. plus it has that awesome rock intro at the beginning. Anime actually is really cool but that lasts until the creators of it have to put the most retarded things in such as: people falling down when somone says something stupid, bubbles appearing from their heads, eyes turning to dots when people say something idiotic, using cheap what looks like x's for veins, the main character usually acts all tough but sometimes cries like he's three and starts to call for mommy (example: This happens in many anime but mainly in Trigun... which happens to be a cool show except for when they put stuff like that in.) The only show that doesn't do anything like that is Cowboy Beebop. And I know there are a few other ones that are like that and aren't completely insane. Why can't they just make a cool anime without the stupid bubbles, people falling over, etc.... if those are ways to express humor they should come up with other methods that are actually funny instead of just plain foolish......with these types of things happening it just makes the entire show appear to be lower in quality and also makes it appear as if it were ran by a bunch of morons.
And the creators of DBZ just stall too much time. I mean they'll have like nearly 100 episodes of just them fighting one guy... ONE GUY!!! They'll spend like 3 episodes of Goku charging up a fireball and miss....HE CANT EVEN MAKE THE THREE EPISODES COUNT!!!! And then all of a sudden they will go fly in the air and start fighting at like light speed and they keep dodging each other's attacks and then suddenly one guy punches slowly and actually hits the other.... how was he able to dodge kicks and punches coming at him so fast but he can't dodge a fist coming at him like at a rate of .00000000000000000000000000000(could go on for a long time so i'll just end the 0's here)1 mile an hour?.... and then the enemy starts to think, "Oh, this is the perfect time to talk about my past....." and starts telling them how he got to earth. and then one of the character decides to think, "this reminds me of a time....." and then they go back like at the firsts episodes of the show... and then after he's done thinking and it's already the 80th episode since the enemy has arrived.... the hero decides to charge up for another 20 episodes (while the enemy, being such an idiot, just looks at the size of the fireball the hero is creating and just makes wierd noises while trembling.) and finally they kill the bad guy.... talk about stalling

hey i bust a gut every time they fall over or cry the 'anime river of tears' or get the vertical lines on their face and be like "AAAAAARRHH!!" and yeah it is kinda funny how in Trigun the main character is made out to be a fightig machine, AND HE IS. but then he lets out a 'river of tears' or gets the beady eyes when faced with a task he thinks hes scared of!
and yeah the DBZ crew are UBER STALLERS!!!11one i watched the episode right after Trunks took out Freiza (or w/e) in one shot (OH GOD THEY FINALLY GOT A BOSS BATTLE OVER IN LIKE 15 SECONDS) but then they all grab a can drink from trunks' (inflatable?) fridge and set around on rocks thinking... THINKING... OUT LOUD!!! all the other characters are admiring Trunks' coolness but hes looking at Vagita's pink shirt... PINK SHIRT!!! what tha hell is the most headstrong character in the show doing wearing a pink button up shirt???
