Gandalf is one of the Ainur, the oldest beings in the Tolien 'verse, created before Middle-Earth. Kinda like angels. More specifically he is one of the Maiar, the less powerful Ainur who has taken human form.

He is an Istar. Istars are Maiars sent by Iluvatar to help Middle Earth.

A maia of Manwe, IIRC.
Radagast is the one of Yavanna.
And Saruman is another maia of Aule I think, like sauron
But I may be wrong, I've read it a long time ago

Isn't he mortal ?
I mean cant he die of age ?

his body can die of age (but he ages (sp?) very slowly) and of injuries
but the maiar in himself never dies.
he died against the balrog (tolkien states that in his letters)
but then returned as the white.
I recommend you to read te unfinished tails (i never remember thee
english names. In german it is: Nachrichten aus mittelerde)
or read his letters.

chise has been spamming a bit more than only with one post. And the deletion of one post decreases your post count by three of four IIRC. And now back on topic

Yes. Concluding: Gandalf is one of the five Istari sent by the Maia from Valinor to Middle-Earth, so he is not an elf, nor a man.
More info on Istari, in the Unfinished Tales

Since he's one of the Ainur, that makes him as old/older than the world itself meaning he's nigh on 38 000 years old

Gandalf is over 3000 years old, sent by the Valar with other Maiar like him to subtly help Men to defeat Sauron using their council and wisdom. These are Saruman the white, Radagast the brown, Gandalf the grey, and the two other blue wizards - all of them are known as the Istari.
Gandalf is just one of the earthly names given to him (another is Mithrandir, the grey pilgrim). Gandalf's real name, as a Maiar, is Olorin - and as a Maiar, he existed before the world itself.

Over 3000 years? Nope. HAving been sent to Middle-earth around 1000 TA, Gandalf (the Grey) was about 2000 years old at the time of the War of the Ring.
However, you are correct as far as the differentiation between Gandalf and Olórin is concerned. Gandalf is only his earthly incarnation, and therefore much younger than the fea Olórin.

3000, 2000, no difference to these damn Maiar

I don't think that after some 38000 years a 1000 or so really matters to you any more.
BTW It would be great if you could do some task for gandalf (like get him a stash of old toby ) and recieve one of his famed fireworks as a gift.
Now that would be a way to celebrate your birthday in-game, I can't wait.
