Just got a new copy of Oblivion. Is it now mod proof? There isn't a data folder at all!!! Nothing like it was with Morrowind!

Help! How do I get a mod to work?

All the vanilla objects are packed into archives named Oblivion*.BSA and Oblivion.ESM. Yet at least a /data folder is needed since these BSA goes there. All others folders aren't need. But if they exist the game will seek things there first. So they are placed by the patches and mods (including the official ones).

If you don't have a /data file folder you can't even get the game working, let alone mods.

If the game is working you are just looking in the wrong place. I think you are looking for the /data into the C:\My Documents...\games\Oblivion (if XP) instead the place the game was actually installed (default= C:\Program files\...\Oblivion).

PS: That folder under C:\My documents... is used by the game to store the saves, the Oblivion.ini it uses currently (instead the default .ini it keeps into the install folder and that isn't meant to be changed). And a few things more.

I may be wrong, but...

If I remember correctly, the meshes folder (in Data folder) only appears AFTER you installed any mod that adds/changes Meshes (depends on what the mod needs).

So, if you haven't installed any mods at all, the folder shouldn't exist. It's normal.

There should be a Data folder there, or something is really weird.

Create a Meshes folder inside if there isnt one yet and you need one. There. Done.

All Oblivion textures/meshes are packed into these neat little archivie things that doesn't require a folder. Open up your Data folder, make a new folder, name it Meshes, then, make another new folder and name it Textures. Voila, problem solved. Install your mod as directed.
