what is a *.rar file? and where do i put it when i dl it?! i've found a few mods that i would want, but they are *.rar and i dont know where to put them. I just need to be enlightened here.

.rar is a compression format much like .zip

You need to use a decompresor (WinRAR BitZipper etc) that can decompress .rar files. More likely than not your .rar file you downloaded will contain a plugin
