Games. Free. Download. Legal

Someone is telling me to play them right this minute!

EDIT: Feel like contributing
Google up 'GameTap' or let me.. angry.gif
http://www.gametap.com/
It's a free/pay software package, let's you play a number of old-school games and modern ones for free. I highly recommend going gold (strangely enough) the paying fee versus the money you save make it worth it.

SECOND EDIT: WOW, they have supreme commander and Overlord. And a free trial for gold membership from the 23rd to the 29th - what are you waiting for?!

EDIT by LHammonds: Please refrain from swearing (and trying to bypass the filter)
LHammonds
GameTap sounds like you can only play the games if you have an active membership...kinda like Valve's Steam.

If you do this "gold" trial period and download a game such as Supreme Commander, I wouldn't be surprised if you are no longer able to play the game after the trail period or if you are not actively logged into the account while online.

If so, this is not something I'd like to promote.

Awesome info, LHammonds. Thanks.

One of my all-time favourite games is Lands of Lore: Throne of Chaos:

On another note, does anyone know what's up with Home of the Underdogs? It seems all the downloads there are broken.

Eh, I've had gametap for a few months. Never paid once, the games are occasionally from decent to great classics (metal slug 2, original street fighter with hotseat co-op) - this is the free section i'm talking about; some of the premium games you pay for are extremely mediocore..

Not trying to promote it, just informing people on productive ways to leech legally.

Edit: I thought bypassing the swear filter was better than just plain profanity, in that case is it okay for me to use **** instead of [Male chicken]

Track Mania Nations Forever (Driving/Racing Game)

http://www.trackmania.com/en/index.php?lan...p;rub=downloads
I was about to shoot this one down because I first learned of "StarForce" copy protection with the initial release of Track Mania. After my bad experience with StarForce, I vowed to never play (or purchase) a game that used the StarForce protection scheme. According to this wiki page, it seems that this particular free version no longer uses the StarForce drivers. It is a very fun game so I will put this on the list.

There was another extremely fun game (to me anyway) called D-Day (2004) that used StarForce which was very upsetting. I played the Demo on a PC I didn't mind loosing if problems occurred but I never bought the game. I can only WISH D-Day will eventually become StarForce free someday as I would snatch it up in a heartbeat! EDIT: Oops, that's not going to ever happen. The company, Monte Cristo, went under and the D-Day homepage went AWOL.

If interested, here is a list of games that use StarForce that you may or may not want to avoid. wink.gif

AnonymousThirdParty, why not just avoid the issue altogether and use alternate words that work just as well...such as "wow" that I used when I edited your post. thumbsup.gif

These two games are free. I think they make their money by selling you goodies for your character, but as far as I know it's completely optional.

Perfect World International (Yes I have a referral link. I hope that's okay.)
Requiem Bloodymare

Edit: Bah, ignore me. These links should be in the multiplayer thread. I must have been asleep when I posted the above. wallbash.gif

Hehe, okay Hammonds - have it your way =D

Three more to add to the freebies list.

http://sfront.ijji.com/ Soldier front. A freeware version of counterstrike; optional payment for member items. Whoever made the installation package was wither ignorant or an idiot, will only install onto your C: drive.

http://www.gunbound.com/ Gunbound. Turn-based game derived from worms, 21 different vehicles (?) - optional payment for some (75%) of the items you can buy.

http://www.cabalonline.com/ Cabal online. Diablo clone, and not too badly done. Optional payment as always for something useless (e.g. a giant electric guitar which you can surf with your warrior, despite being called a %&$! by everyone around you)

If only I didn't have a limit to how much I can download wallbash.gif (We're on a plan, live in the country)

I don't have any experience with Starforce - though I can verify that it is not installed with TMNationsForever. And yes, it is fun - until you miss that acrobatics jump for the n-teenth time, and realize that you've just got to try it once more. wink.gif

I still downloaded tower of goo whistling.gif

ITS SO FUN biggrin.gif

Here's a cool game.

I don't recommend Psi-ops. I got it, and found, to my horror, that there was about 5 seconds of lag between keyboard input and action taken on the screen during one of the boss fights. "LAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAG!" was the repeated cry as I was crushed by a train carriage again, again and again. If it weren't for the lag, I would recommend it heartily! It's got gibbing! And Physics!

I loved the Mech Commander games.

I know this is an old post, but I just had to comment on this.

same here. In my opinion, the part of the "Mech" series I liked best was "Mechwarrior 4: Vengeance." Nothing beats feeling like your in a cockpit of a Mech, blowing someone up with a salvo of missiles or a pair of PPC's... *Sigh*

Good times, good times... biggrin.gif

This game is quite fun...

The Battle for Wesnoth: http://www.wesnoth.org/

herosinger
Abandonware DOS Games: http://www.oldgames.sk/en/

This site is especially useful for two reasons.

1) Most games include manuals, etc.

2) Many games include executables that include DOSBox and batch files that make it very easy to play.

Reduced 75%

1200 x 1050 (100.92K)

there are so many bugs in this game and once you get to a certain point thats about half an hour through the game, you can't progress whatsoever. bugs and glitches make this game 100% impossible to finish. (There's a big big problem with jumping in certain area's)

Incredible game, worms but real time...
macmert

Thanks for these, I'll have hours of fun downloading and installing them.

I thought all games were free anyway. *runs*

BlitWise Games, namely PocketTanks. All free, with a premium option.
Palpenious
I know Gametap has been mentioned, and understand concerns of pay to play, but thought I would say Fallout 1 is free to play on it. I lost it when I saw that, just as I was getting into 3. It was pretty cool to start them both side-by-side, and see the similarities and such.

That is not a "FREE" game, it is called Shareware.

If you like this kind of game, you might want to try the actual free versions:
- Scorched 3D
- Tank Wars
- Mortar Mayhem

No worries, there is a link at the top of the 1st post to single-player online games. Those games will take you to sites that have tons of other games you might like as well...usually takes less than a minute to load the game.
