This is quoted above only for reference. 200 mods running and some of them appear to be pretty intensive.

I'm concerned that my compy won't be able to run OB at an acceptable FPS. This chaps my hide as it's about a year and a half old gaming rig. Here's what I've got and here's what I'm getting:

WidowPC with AMD Athlon 64 FX-60, nVidia GForce 7900 GTX with 512 mb vram. System has 2 GB of RAM.

Standing outdoors at Fort Ash, I bounce between 15 and 20 FPS. Indoors in mines and such I'm at around 50 FPS. I think I have around 15 mods loaded. Nothing to serious in there.

Question: is this normal, should I be concerned with my ability to add more mods?

With MW, this machine would crank out around 45 FPS even in crazy modified Balmora......

OB is tough......

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Is this with, or without grass enabled? What are your other visual settings at? You can still probably use most mods, you should just avoid anything like texture packs or anything which is excess eyecandy. So long as you don't develop a "I must have perfect graphics, and still get 20 frames a second" mentallity, you shouldn't have too many problems, your framerate may go as low as 6-10 frames a second, but should be playable in most cases.

it seems to be that perhaps your PC isn't up for oblivion? but looking from your specs it must be in game try lowing your Screen rez down a bit some with textures most games don't at perfect even on the most updated PC

That is with grass enabled, distant lands enabled and all settings on high. I also have QTP3 installed. Hmm, yep, you pinned me, I'm a graphics freak. Fortunately I loaded all the tex replacers with Bash so can remove them at will.

Turning off grass and distant lands and so on doesn't seem to do anything for me on FPS. Odd. 6 to 10 FPS is beyond the realm of playable to me. Are there any auto-optimizers out there? I can install OBSE if necessary.

The PC was optimized for Morrowind using the tweak guide. Windows XP was stripped down to its bare essentials. This machine was able to run MW with a huge amount of mods running at a very acceptable frame rate.

I guess I'm just wondering what people get on their machines to see if I should lower my expectations for my rig. I can push it back to vanilla, but that would certainly be a downer.

To be honest its not your system, its capable of running it with texture packs etc, altho you WILL get a large drop with Qarls.

I would 10fps is playable in towns, but not outside in a fight.




Heres a comparison for you. My rig is 2.4ghz QUAD CORE processor, a Nvidia GTX280 with 1gb RAM. 4gb system RAM...



and guess what? on VANILLA OB, on max graphics i get no more than 20fps in IC MARKET - average is 10fps. and with my 255 mods loaded inc better cities mroe ppl texutres pretty much everything. my max fps is 15. and my average is 5....


pretty much no difference. weird huh? Think its just oblviions way of using your system.

For your rig, the texture packs are probably what is killing you. If you really "must" have more detailed textures on everything, I believe there is a high-def normal map replacer somewhere that can significantly improve the look of most things without affecting framerates too much. Turning down resolution and disabling grass can also help.

No matter what, you won't be going above 30 fps on that machine unless you totally drop your graphics quallity, view distance, and disable some of the effects (shadows, reflections, hdr). Mods don't matter in this case, it's just how the game is. Oblivion simply requires a much better computer than Morrowind. Even though at this point Oblivion is becoming a fairly old game, when it first came out it had requirements high enough to force most to upgrade their computers. Oblivion was simply designed with future hardware in mind while Morrowind was designed more with current hardware in mind. This is because the developers of Oblivion figured that the game would still be played for a few years after release. Some mods are also made with future hardware in mind.
