My game seems to keep crashing; during the Taking Care of Lex thieves guild quest. Right after i get the forged letter; i go to get the stamp for it and every single time i open the door; it crashes the second i'm in the room

Deactivate all of your mods and make sure it works.

Then activate them one by one until you find the culprit and / or get past that spot in the quest.

This may not work, but It might. When was the last time you turned your computer off? Sometimes I get a CTD after opening certain doors and restarting my comp fixes whatever bug was floating around. It also keeps me from deactivating everything.

You could try rearranging your load order with FCOMHelper. See if that works

Smack me on the head but I'm afraid of fcom helper -- only because I tend to NOT like the most popular mods. I like homes. I like magic. I like decorating. I love clothes. I like Cobl and OBSE. I don't like mighty magic. I do like Supreme Magicka. I don't like deadly reflex. It sucks for a mage/archer. After I installed I lost the ability to zoom in, using the CTRL key. I have to use my r-mouse which irritates me.

Discussion on Fcomhelper is welcome, I have an open mind on that, but in the meantime:

Have you checked the conflicts with OBMM? There may be something modifying the same world space as that room.
Then you could simply temporarily turn off that mod while you have to do your thing for the quest.



Anyway. This is what I would do.

First, is it crashing on all the recent saves, or just the last one?

If you find that it's only crashing on the last one, then you need to think about what mods you added (or deleted) between the saves that work and the saves that crash.

I would suggest possibly turning off the mods that you added to the saves that crash.

BUT FIRST

I cannot stress enough that you should analyze the saves with WRYE BASH. It will tell you if you have any missing masters, it will tell you if there are missing mods that the save is trying to load or access. It has a color coded schema that flags any mod that is causing trouble.

Since I have found that turning off all my mods can sometimes lead to problems --

like any quest mod that gives you a quest item can sometimes be screwed up by turning it off and on, for example. Nothing pisses me off like that one. That's why I haven't found the Mountain Tower, I lost the letter by turning off a bunch of mods. Then I couldn't get the letter back because the mailbox is empty. I haven't gotten around to finding the letter in the construction set yet, but you get the drift.

My opinion is Bash will save you from bashing your head into the ground.

If it's only crashing on the most recent save come back and tell us. I have some ideas about that which have worked for me.

I have a lot of conflicting mods as well, actually most mods conflict with Oblivion.esm anyway, they change something from the master, which is technically a conflict.

It's just the degree of the conflict that is the balancing act. I probably have as many as this person, I have upwards of 150 or so presently.

Just using the helper tool won't add any of the mods you don't like and it has a fairly extensive database of even some of the lesser known / popular ones so I can't see what harm this could do you.

I actually downloaded it, when I was considering using it (not too long ago in fact) and I went through that database file and re-arranged them myself with OBMM based on its content. And yet, still I fear.

I think it's because I'm kind of a control freak and I don't like things that automate things too much, unless I know exactly what they're automating. Like in real life I won't have a dishwasher, I can wash them just fine myself.

I'd say, less "control-freak" and more "masochist".

I love the tool. I don't like having to sift through tons of OBMM errors trying to figure out which are important enough to dictate where a mod should be.

BTW, if we're going to go with your thinking, shouldn't you NOT be using a computer?
