Full Version: Great Mods, but too big for me to get

Giskard makes some of the greastest mods I've ever had the pleasure of playing for Oblivion, and there are many others as well, but that is not my problem. My problem is dial-up, the only internet connection speed available to me. And most folks understand that a large size file download at dial-up speed is a recipe for disaster.
Download manager software, (at least some of them), have a resume capability that will allow the download to resume where it left off at when the connection is lost or interrupted. My particular manager has that capability. BUT. It doesn't seem to work here at the nexus. As an example I've made three attempts to get The Elder Council Core Files_V4 a 100+ megabyte file. Three attempts, three failures. I contacted nexus via support message about it, but I was also wondering if anyone else here had any possible workarounds or fixes for this issue.

I may be a rookie here, but I've been working with personal computers and putting messages on computer message boards longer than a lot of people have been alive. I started in 1970, this is 2008, that's 38 years by my count.

as a fellow dial-upper I definately feel your pain but the reason why the resume doesn't work is due to the fact that it's a "Premium" feature here.

That's not the reason at all. The reason is because downloads are fed through a PHP script rather than directly. This is done for a number of reasons, including:

1) To stop bandwidth leechers
2) To enforce the speed-cap put in place for normal members
3) To better monitor and eventually deal with exploiters and bandwidth leechers

These are very important security influenced features that, without them, would severely cripple the integrity of the site. Unfortunately this does mean that a small minority of users might have a hard time getting their downloads.

I believe there are other dial-up users who have circumvented the issue through the use of download managers than actually work, but I couldn't name them. Perhaps these people could help you.

I humbly apologize for my misunderstanding of the matter.

Coaster, when I was a dial-up user I found the Proxyconn Dial-Up Accelerator extremely helpful. They have piggyback servers all over the U.S., and the speed is increased through static webpages being stored, as well as data compression/decompression on-the-fly.

If you live in the U.S., take a look at Proxyconn. It helped me a lot before I made the move to cable broadband. Proxyconn Dial-Up Accelerator

Just make sure you don't click the one for cable by accident! biggrin.gif

Well, I don't want to be flooded with requests for this but since I just did it for another dial-up user and so have a copy of the DVD I made, if you PM me your addresses I'll shoot a couple out to you two.

It has 3gb of compressed mods (including most of Giskards), the latest Oblivion patch, OBMM, FCOMhelper, OBSE, my exported load order and (since the feller didn't have them), the XP SP3 and .net installers.

Cheers.
