I've wondered for sometime why Sheogorath is offered lettuce, yarn and lesser soul gems. Well I've composed a theory, so here it goes.
Lettuce:
Round, Circular, Organic. This can mean a couple of things, in theory I believe because it is round it can be thought of as "Mind". Alternatively because it is organic it can mean Flesh. Thereby an offering of Lettuce is equal to an offering of flesh to Sheogorath.
Yarn:
Fabric, Material. This can mean Bone, or Materials like stone and steel or metal and so on and so forth or even creativity since it can be used to make things and Sheogorath is also lord of the creative ( See Myths of Sheogorath, he proclaims himself to be lord of the creative and lord of the demented ) so this may mean an offering of bone or an offering of creativity to Sheogorath.
Lesser Soul Gem:
Spirit and Soul. This is self-explanatory, an offering of a lesser soul gem is an offering of soul or spirit to Sheogorath. Particularly why a lesser soul gem or a petty one is simple; because all spirits and souls are in turn lesser then Sheogoraths.
Hows that for a theory? It made sense to me.

Makes sense though I doubt Bethesda thought that much of it when they made the game. I think that they thought it should just be some rather strange things that he demanded seeing as he is quite mad. But still you idea has merit.

I agree that those items were carefully chosen, but I think they were chosen for different reasons. Think of it this way: While playing the game, one comes across countless cabbages, yarns and lesser soul gems. You rarely even think about it, because they're so common. But, the moment that they're suddenly needed for a Daedric quest, they seem almost impossible to find. And when you're ransacking basements looking for yarn, or sneaking around the Feed Bag trying to find cabbage, well, you can't help but feel a little... crazy.
It's either that, or we're all looking too deep into this. It may be closer to the latter option.

Thats true actually. The moment I wanted to start the quest I couldnt find a single one of the items. It drove me absolutely nuts. Hmmmm.... Bethesda seems more clever than they appear to be (which honestly does not take a lot of effort).

Like me I would wager good money that the NEXT time you played the game you salted away all the oddball stuff like this and the imp gall, the bear pelt, etc so ya wouldn't have to go looking for it again. LOL

You make a good point. Whenever I start a new game, if I run across an item I know I'll need for a later quest, I'll keep it until I start that quest.

Madness does not have o be illiterate, rhs.
The theory is possible, but as someone said, the chance is quite low, probably what Ricky said. ANd Madgamer, I stock up on everything that could be helpfull from thee start. Including Grand Soul Gems, incase I get vampirism (dont use the Obelisk of Purification in the DLC, seems almost like a cheat.)
Its not roleplaying, but then again, perhaps sneaking around the homes of the poorest peasentry looking for a yarn, or stealing the starved farmers cabbages may not be either.
