What's a fun character build for you're first playthrough?

Any recommendations please.

I'm looking for a dark knight type character if that helps.
I want something where you can easily control you're leveling also.

It is never really easy to control your levelling (nor is it very much fun). For a first playthrough I suggest you take a look in your manual or at www.UESP.net and read up on the different skills and find those that would suit you and your style of play best and then simply create a custom class called Dark Knight. That way it will be exactly what you think a Dark Knight should be like and not what the rest of the community thinks it should be like. I for example cannot help but thinking of teh Dark Knight from Monty Python and the Quest for the Holy Grail (What? This? This is only a flesh wound!!).

Indeed, research the skills to decide which ones to pick for a Custom Class.
If you want to level quickly in the beginning, include Athletics and Acrobatics in your mix, and then just run and jump constantly.
If you want to take longer to level, include Block and Heavy (or Light, as you see fit) Armor.

Welcome to Cyrodil, buddy! Have fun playing with the Vanilla version for a while before you add in a bunch of mods, and you'll really grow to appreciate how much the modding community has done to improve Oblivion, practically rebuilding it from the ground up.

Enjoy! thumbsup.gif

Ignore those other two, they have no idea what they're talking about. Alright, here's your build: No matter what kind of character you're making, you'll ALWAYS want Speechcraft, Mercantile, and Alteration. No matter what. Also, Armour skills are a waste of time, don't choose either of them. Same with Weapon skills, unless you REALLY like min/maxing. And since they TOTALLY NERFED Alteration with the latest patch, you'll probably want some Mysticism to bolster it. Since you're a Dark Knight, I'd suggest Armourer and Conjuration, two classic evil skills. After that, just choose a few bonus tricks like Acrobatics or Bluff or Conversion. Remember, since you can have up to ten major skills, you have a lot of room to customise.

Hope I helped!
OpHawk
Extremely helpful ricky! What would you suggest for a race?

thanks.gif
rickythecat
Well, I personally only play Argonians, but then again I wou

You know what? I can't do this anymore. Sorry to mislead you, but basically everything I've said to you up to this point has been an outright fabrication. I've pretty much been giving you the worst possible advice. I didn't actually think you'd take it seriously; I mean, Bluff and Convert aren't even real skills. So let me make it up to you with some real advice:

Alright, in the beginning of the gamme you choose seven major skills, which will start off stronger than all the other skills and will level up faster. Most of them aer pretty well "balanced" so to say, but some of them are certainly more useful than others. First of all, Speechcraft and Mercantile are REALLy not that useful for most characters, unless you want them for roleplaying reasons. When choosing Blade/Blunt Weapon and Heavy/Light Armour skills, (which are actually incredibly important for being any good in a fight,) make sure that you only choose one variety, since they all end up balancing out well. For a Dark Knight themed character, I'd suggest Heavy Armour, Bladed Weapons, Destruction Magic, and Armourer. After that point, it's just personal taste. Choose Athletics if you want to run faster, Acrobatics if you want to jump higher, (though in Heavy Armour it might not be that useful,) so on and so forth. As far as choice of race, it doesn't really affect your character's development all that much. Choose the one you like the best. Though, if you really do care about stats and such, Redguards, Nords, and Imperials all make good warriors. Dark Elves also get bonuses to blades magic, which would be useful for a Dark Knight.

Hope I actually helped this time!
OpHawk
lol it's alright. I haven't actually started the game yet. Thank you for you're new advice.

No prob, hope you enjoy it.

Now that wasn't very nice.
It was, however, hysterically funny, in the same way as sending the new soldier to go fetch "a bucket of propwash," or some chemlight batteries, or a few hundred meters of flightline...
If I remember correctly, Bluff (as a skill) is from Neverwinter Nights, and Conversion comes from Diablo II?

Yeah, his second batch of advice was legit.

On the contrary buddy I know exactly what I am talking about. Ive been playing this game since the day it came out and before that I played both Daggerfall and Morrowind. I just dont think that he should take so much advice from others on his characters before having tried the game. It is much more fun learining these things the hard way. I for one find that a nerfed character makes for a much more interesting play than one that is tailored exactly to fit the race you are playing. After all not all Altmer are Wizards just because they get a bonus from it. I personally find that the single most important choice you have to make is the race of your character. You have to like the way he looks otherwise you are gonna bore yourself to death with a character you dont really like. The class you choose should suit your style of play rather the just being an optimisation of skills. So if you really are the fighter kind of guy and chose a khajiit because you really like these furballs then you shouldnt force yourself to take a stealth class just because this is where the Khajiit would excel because it would make the game easier at lower levels. The lower levels count for nothing in this game. It only really gets fun when you cross the 20 lvl line (I find at least) and it is so much sweeter to get there if you know you had to work for it with your nerfed character instead of just having your cake and eating it.

Haha, sharp eyes! Right on both counts. Also, thank you for not reacting like this:

While I'm sure we're all quite impressed with your great fortitude and independent spirit, you may have noticed that I retracted most of what I said a few posts ago. That is to say, y'know, that... this wasn't entirely relevant anymore? Still, I do agree on your points about "nerfed" characters. Personally, I don't believe in them. I always say that people should play to their own strengths, rather than those assigned by the game. Well, I don't always say that, because that phrase is really only useful in a few, very specific situations, and it would be strange to just sound off about gaming philosophy at the dinner table, but you get what I mean.

This has been an amusing thread to read.

rickythecat:

I may have come of somewhat more harshly than was intended in my post and for that I apologise. But I do not like to be told that I am wrong simply because one person does not agree with my views. Gods know there are plenty of ignorant fools out there in the world who do just that and Ive met more than I care to. But I hope there are no hard feelings between us. As I said I may have overreacted a bit.
rickythecat
Haha, of course there are no hard feelings! It was just a misunderstanding, no big deal. Besides, I ended up agreeing with you anyway. =P
Michlo
Welcome aboard and good luck.

I would have to agree with MOST of what has been written here except for that strange Ricky feller, we never listen to him unless he has had his full medication for the day and the straps are tied on his jacket. smile.gif

My biggest piece of advice would be this:

It is really unwise to level up quickly. Especially if you are a beginner. The mobs (enemies) will level up with you and you can quickly find yourself overwhelmed until you're used to your character.

So. Choose major skills that you WON'T be using very often. This way, you can more easily control your slower levelling and take it at your own pace. If you choose a skill you'll be using all the time you'll find yourself level 50 in no time. heh

Good luck!

Hey, Michlo... for some of us that joke isn't so funny, y'know? I have an uncle who actually is mentally disturbed. He's a paranoid schizophrenic. He does have to take all of his medication, and he does have to wear a strait jacket. If he doesn't he starts trying to pull out all of his hair. He used to be a great guy, and I still go visit him sometimes, but, y'know... it's never something my family laughs about. So, hey, just... maybe be a bit more careful when you joke about this sort of thing, alright?

Umm, Ricky, I too have this in my family but unlike you, apparently, I've learned not to take things too seriously. Based on your whacky posts, I would have thought the same of you.

Ah well, live and learn.
rickythecat
Well, the main difference in our situations is that mine isn't actually real. For the most part, at least. I was just trying to guilt you a bit, just for kicks, but it looks like my plan backfired. Sorry about that. I suppose I'll just have to try harder next time! wink.gif

Anyway, I've got to say, I'm really impressed! You people take things just seriously enough here! In most of the places I've been, I would have been reported a dozen times by now, or at least flamed all to hell. So, in recognition of your great services, I present you, Michlo, with the All-Around-Alright-Guy award, for staying cool in the face of silliness. Congratulations! Wear it with pride.
Michlo
Haha, Ricky, thank you. Yes, I've been to those places, too. Not fun.

A lot of people use the "anonymity" of the internet to be far crueler, etc. than they'd dare be in person so we have that to contend with but overall, I've not seen that problem here at the Nexus, thankfully. smile.gif

Anyway, please continue to be a character, I do like your posts, umm, even when you manage to trick me, ya bugger.

Now where's this reward for me to wear? *looks around*

Oh and to the OP, I found this which might be good reading for you.

Cheers.

What a very strange turn this topic suddenly took.

Oh and OpHawk, when you gotten the hang on this game and its level system you might wanna consider installing Oscuros Oblivion Overhaul. It fixes the horrible everything-in-the-world-is-your-level levelled lists. I find it makes for a much more immersive game. You should check it out http://devnull.sweetdanger.com/OOO/OOO_Guide.html

If ya got the money the chapter in the strategy guide will give you a great start with how to create a character. As for easier leveling you might consider going to Nexus and look for a level slowing MOD. The one I use can be changed from 2-5 times slower and makes the game easier to level up. It also means you will not get to that magic level 20 (and get the good loot) as quick, but depending on where you set the level slowing program you could finish by level 30 or so. Just a thought.
