So I decided to download the Construction Set and try my hand at this whole modding thing. Without going into detail on my projects here we go.
I was working on making a door to another cell in a mod that someone else made for me. After a day and a half of stress, lots of bad words, and almost having an anneurism some funny stuff was happening. I contacted the dude that made the mod for me. He fixed the file, adding what I had try to add per my specifications.
So I went in and removed the old esp from the data folder and put the new one in. Tested it in game, and its the same as the old .esp because the computer things its still there. Even after removing it, it will still show up in the data files menu on the launcher.
My question is how do I make that file stop showing up in the data files menu and in the CS when its not there.
I have a similar problem with some other files. They were the ones I created when I was trying to mod, they're just screwup files that I just want to get rid of. But they still show up in CS and in the data files menu. But nowhere else. They are not in the data folder but keep showing up in those two places and its frustrating
Please help me before I break something

Sounds like a problem with your install.
After deleting a esp from your data folder it shouldnt show up in your launcher or CS, and seeing how it does... you have a problem. A pretty weird one at that... I would recommend a reinstall.

I used a program called revouninstaller that basically nukes what you're installing and any folders associated with it, it also takes a flamethrower to the registry to clear out anything left over. So anything oblivion related is gone, like it was never there.
I'm reinstalling it now. Lets hope this works.

Serious, I couldn't understand a bit about what you are saying... seems you are coming from another thread where you explained whatever you were doing. But at least one thing seems clear, or not... are you saying some esp that isn't in the data folder showing up in the list? are you using Windows Vista perchance?

Here was the problem. I tried modding. I noobed it up bigtime in the CS. I decied to solve the problems by uninstalling OB and the CS. I reinstalled them both and tried again with the modding. When I launched OB and looked at the data files to make sure it was clean, A good chunk of the mods that were installed were still there in the data files viewer. But the data folder in the program files folder had nothing in it but what is put there when you install oblivion.
I looked in CS to verify this and all the same stuff was in there too, it was as if I'd never even uninstalled.
So I had someone from here add what I wanted added for me because me made that mod in the first place. He did, but when I went to test it out, nothing looked changed because of all the muckedy muck in the launcher and the CS and whenever I try to save anything in CS it will only let me save it in the OBlivion>Data folder and not anywhere else, and even after I save it, it does not show up in the Data folder. I'll search for it and it will tell me thats where it is, but when I actually go look, no dice.
And yes I have vista.
So I went through and uninstalled it with a program that completely cleans out the program, any associated folders and registry files, and then reinstalled OB and CS. I haven't tried anything yet, but lets hope it did everything clean this time. If not, then I wont be doing anything fancy until I can afford a different computer.

Ok, so like I said, I ran a program called Revo Uninstaller on Oblivion and I uninstalled CS. Then I reinstalled Oblivion. I just ran the launcher looked in the data files and all of that stuff is still there. There is nothing in the data folder but what is put there when a the game is installed. But I look in data files and all of that stuff is there. Why?
WHY?!?!?!?
This is very annoying. I'm going to bed, I'll put up some screenshots tomorrow when I have time. My mother's birthday is tomorrow and I also have to interview a novelist so I'll try as soon as I can.

If you uninstall the game/whatever, all customized & CS'ed stuff will still remain in the folder, there are two ways to fix it, first is to delete the entire "Data" folder after the uninstall process and since you were playing around with the CS, I'd delete all the mod-backups you might have taken and hopefully you've kept the zip/rar files with untouched .esp texture & mesh files safe somewhere. If not, you'll have to redownload each and everyone of them. The second surefire way is to install the entire game to another disk, if however your computer only has one "Disk", you'll have to settle for the first option, unless you would prefer the full reinstall of windows.(Required if you wanted to divide your disk into parts later on.)

I did do the first option, all the mod files are backed up on an external hard drive. and after the uninstall process I deleted the entire BETH folder and then reinstalled it.

Have you tried installing the game on the external hard drive?(ignore if it's not large enough/doesn't support usb2.0) Do you have windows/whatever installed in the same disk as your oblivion game?(Stupid question, but unfortunately some people actually install games to the same disk where windows installation etc. reside. Just want to make sure.) Anyway, if not, I'd back up all the other programs you have in the same disk and then format it, this should remove all of the unwanted/hidden files on the entire disk. Rather drastic measure, but should fix it.

It installs to C/Program Files/Bethesda Softworks/Oblivion. The hard drive only holds 80GB and I keep all of my music/podcasts and Mods on there so its nearly full.
Heres some screens I took last night

The root folder is totally clean, but all this poo that's not supposed to be there is still in the launcher.
I've uninstalled and reinstalled this game three times since yesterday and its not fixing anything except that it somehow made my graphics better and decreased lag.
EDIT for some unknown reason I can't see the screens I just linked to so heres the direct link

Hmm I actually had an idea, check all the registry files in C:\My Documents\My Games\Oblivion and delete all apart from your savegames, if you still hold them. After doing this, check the launcher again. You will need to set the basic Oblivion settings as well as graphics settings to your liking tho.(Possibly also go to the options menu in the launcher and re-select your graphics card as this may result in it not being autodetected, just press the "Reset To Defaults" or choose the graphic settings to your liking.)

Holy poo, I never thought of that. I forgot that OB stuffs things in that folder . . . .

vulk, I just did that and it didn't fix anything.

Remember to reinstall oblivion after this step, incase the registry files have already f'ed it up. If this doesn't fix it, tell me and I'll try to think of something else.
edit: You beat me to this, will try to think of something.

I hope I can find a solution for this today. I have to send my computer to service for a week tomorrow to have a key replaced. If this isn't fixed I may just have them wipe the drive while its up there.

There aren't many things I can think of right now, these are just "objects" inside the game that aren't working properly and you want them removed right? No other "real" errors that would harm the gameplay apart from non-working stuff? If you can, please give me exact details on what's "going wrong" when actually playing?

I just uninstalled OB and cleared out the beth folder in prog files. I nuked the my games folder, cleared out the recent data, the roaming, and appdata.
I'm going to go ahead and run some other clutter maintenance programs and do a full restart before I reinstall it.
But yes what it is, is that there is poo thats not supposed to be in the data files launcher but its there, even after three, now four, uninstalls.
The root data folder is totally clean, but its still there.
But I'm going to run some cleaning and defrag programs on my entire system and then restart it before I try reinstalling.

Have you tried using OBMM "delete" function? This should remove the esps from the "data files" menu.
edit:link to
OBMM incase you don't have it.

I have OBMM I just have no idea how to use it.

Activate OBMM, on the left there should be the panel with mods you have installed, if you can see the mods causing problems, right click on them and choose "delete" from there, it should remove the .esps completely.

If you are in this phase of installing, avoid doing so into the "program files" folder, Just installing any game (or anything else) aways from there will spare you a lot of headache. This whole issue about the /data is reported in all kind of variations around here. Not being myself a Vista user I'm just repeating what I saw several times in several places.
