I bet that all who have played Oblivion have had their own scary moment!
I will tell you mine, and if you want tell me yours too

I was in Bruma walking around, when i suddenly wanted to enter the chapel. I went in and looked around for a bit. After a while the place was empty, looked for any npc's but there were none to be seen.
I went down to the Chapel Halls and looked, saw no one, heard no one....the place was dead so to speak. But then all of a sudden behind me came a big character and said with a LOUD voice...Stop right there you criminal scum.....it was Amadus Philida!!
Don't ask me where he came from cuz i have no idea....but he scared the h*ll out of me!
That is my only scary moment, please share yours too

I was exploring the vampire haven from "Vampire Haven" mod. I looked around, when i went into the library, i heard some person speaking. Sounded like a little girl to me, she was whispering, i looked around, but there was nobody. I get jumpy every time i hear a person whisper like that. I disabled the mod after that.

Be warned, I'm easily scared, so this might not seem remotely frightening to anybody else.
I was dungeon crawling in an Ayleid ruin, crouched down with my bow out. It was really dark, since I have the Darker Dungeons mod enabled, and the only light came from around the corner. So I just kept walking forward slowly, ready to fire an arrow at any moment. I was about halfway down the hallway when I got hit by those swinging blades that come out of the walls. I fell out of my chair and screamed.
Of course, the suspenseful music I put in the 'dungeon' folder didn't help much.

I would have been just as scared as you got.... dark hallways...alone...creepy sounds....and then all of the sudden u get hit by those loud making blade traps from the walll... XD

Yeah, and right after that a zombie walked around the corner and started running at me, only to get sliced up by the swinging blades. Then I started laughing. Poor, pathetic undead zombie man.

Nothing so far was as intense as making me soil my pants, but the Ayleid ruins with zombies in them do give me the creeps.

I was north of Cheydinhal, at the cave full of necromancers that overlooks a waterfall and pond. I was running and jumping about minding my own business. I decided to turn around for some unreasonable reason and was suddenly face to chest with a troll who began throwing all around the little pond I mentioned earlier.
I survived. Luckily my characters pants were cleaned from his sudden bath. The troll however wasn't so lucky, and is now lying at the top of that waterfall as a warning not to sneak up on a spell slinging sorcerer.

Well this might sound silly, but you know all the expected things, so when they appear now it doesn't spook me, not much does..But I was dudgeon crawling, since then I can't find the bloody dudgeon, where I found this thing..Well I was wandering around with Neeshka my companion, and lo and behold, I did not think there was one of these in Oblivion, I turned a corner to be greeted by this giant and I mean bloody big bugger, big as a Deadroth.. mud crab..sacred the bloody'ell out of me..For some reason with one swipe took out Neeshka as she has a tendency to just charge forward, and I ran like hell..
Got my composure and came back and fire-balled it to death, at a distance mind.. with finger of the mountain zap for good luck..
A giant mud crab, not scared of anything, but the unexpected sometimes, and that was it..
Anybody know the name of the bloomin' cave I like to find it again..??

I have two. The first true scare I encountered was while running the "Lost Paladin of the Divines" mod. I was looking around in a ruin populated by werewolves. I heard them howling but could not see them. When the first one attacked, it was so realistic and quick that I literally did jerk in my chair.
The second was when I first saw that giant creature I had to fight in Midas Spells. It was the granddaddy of the Balrog you get in the "Midas Summon Balrog" spell.

When I was playing the lost spires, was level 1 with rubbish equipment. In the firt dungeon heard a Growl, turned around saw this ogre take a swing at me. Luckily I was an aerobic class and managed to dodge out of its way. But I was still chased for long time.
About 10 minutes and 40 arrows later the thing was dead and I escaped.
Only then did I release I had the difficulty on full :/

I believe you were running the "Lost Spires" mod. I don't remember which Spire it was, but it's the one where you recover the Stele for that Goddess. I'm guessing that mod because a giant mudcrab is in the cave in one of those Spires.

No particular moment for me, just every time I'm crawling through an undead dungeon. Those things seriously give me the creeps! The first time I got FG quest where you get the journal (Crumbling Rock Cave?), I couldn't do it right away. I had to wait until I had life detect & nighteye enchantments.
I won't even talk about Sancre Tor. I tend to start a new character around that time.

Hmm, the most scariest moments I have, was during The Dungeons of Ivellon mod.
It's incredible creepy with insane amounts of bone-chilling frightening sounds and lighting effects.
Can't say witch moment exactly was the scariest since the whole mod is extremely well done in this regards but I've never been so happy to see daylight when I get out the dungeon.

Muhahaha!!! Yes, that was fun making that level. I initially had the 1st werewolf hiding behind the 1st corner and would only come out when you got very close but then I added an NPC to further the storyline and to give it more depth...you also get to see the werewolf kill him in one mighty blow!

This was quite a while ago, but it was freaky as heck. I think I yelled, and my friend was over too...

Anyways, I was a High Elf mage-thingy (appropriately named "Edward Magebottom") and was exploring some Ayleid ruin (forget which one...mightve been Vilverin). I was looking around an empty room for loot and whatnot, when all of a sudden a freaking hand smacks me in the face. Of course, my spindly mage almost died from the one hit, only to see a freaking zombie swinging at me from where the wall was a second ago. Damn pressure plates on the floor...I was so freaked after that.

You're welcome. You'll enjoy it quite a bit, as it adds 15 hours of game-time, and it now has full voiceovers.
Umm....you might want to wait until your character is at least Level 20, as that mod is geared for higher-level characters.
Aeryn, if you'd like to have all of your map markers on, PM me & I'll send how to do that (without mods) to you. Can't post it here in the General Forum.

If something really "scariest" may be in Oblivion I think it need yet to be modded. Coming home to encounter a scornful wife that follows you around the house complaining about your's meetings with the lads in the local tavern so to drink sujama while sharing the last adventuring tales

Edit: I think the girls have some equal but different variation on the theme

Edit2: Albeit only the most masochist would go for such a mod.... the perfect musical background should be Mozart's "Queen of the night" aria from the Magic flute opera (this shall turns dialog superfluous even)
Edit3: Now that I thought about it, this kind of thing is a wonderful reason someone never being bored adventuring (indeed seems to be implemented already in Oblivion... that hunter(trainer) than help chasing the mountain lions in the fighter's guild Rats quest )

Oooh I will have to check that out though they scare the bejeesus out of me..last night I got another scare I was beneath the water just swimimg about, I am an Aquamer, Cappucines new race, so I breath well with my gills, nice race..anyways..
I was about to open a treasure chest near a abandoned ship, near one of the waterfronts I forget now, whether it was Anvil, or Imperial, it one not obvious, well I do believe its my Alive waters that puts in new fish, underwater foliage, and a few more ships and what not ..
So as I bent to open the treasure chest it said, whack in the back, by the two, not one, but two of the most vicious aggressive fish I have yet to encounter other than slaughter fish, two electric eels..with very sharp teeth..attacking me at once..
I killed the first and the second got me, but I was a wee more than startled, I'll tell you, its the unexpected that always gets me..I am so glad I Dl the mod that saves game every 5 minutes its more then saved me arse..a few times..when the unexpected happens..
But hmm, I shall check out the giant slaughter fish..Niban Bay north of Bravil, no cave name thanks allot, so its going to take me by suprise great...a giant slaughter fish Ok well here I go a hunting..

Scary? well the only bit so far to give me a shock is on the Shivering Isles. Theres a Heretic base just a little north of Bliss, where all the Red Kelp plants grow. I cleared the first room and found a button on the main platform, i daftly decided to stand on the platform and push the button. The floor went skyward for me

I looked down and couldn't even see where i was gonna land, i freaked out cuz i thought i was gonna die and i had forgot to save

Hilarious afterward though

Definately a good idea from whoever at Bethesda thought of it

I've had quite a few scary moments, usually it's something jupming out at my when unexpected. But the funniest scary moment was acctually when my wife was playing she had just started a new character after seimi-retiring her 25th level mage and was doing the intro quest. Here new character was this really short 1/2 cat person (from Beautiful people) and she was walking down the hallway that has a rat then a zombie in it. Well she killed the rat and the zombie and was looting them and when she came out of the inventory screen another rat jumped at her from around the corner. Because her character was so short the rat looked like it was flying right at her face. She jumped in her chair and screamed, I started laughing, and then POW she punched me in the arm REALLY HARD and yelled at me for laughing at her.
NOW THAT WAS SCARY.

Ouch, musta hurt? I don't have a scariest moment in Oblivion. Cept when I was walking through a dungeon and I was staring at a welkynd stone for some reason. And I turn around to see a skeleton pounding my face in with his sword. Made me jump a little.

Alright, I have another scary event.
I decided to run from Cheydinhal to Leyawiin so I could map the area and see the sights. After making it halfway through to the Imperial bridge near the Silverfish River it is getting dark. I see that there is a settlement marker on my "magic" compass, and figure I can sleep ther efor the night. I approach it and discover Cadlew Chapel. Suspecting nothing from the coffins littering the nearby beach, I enter, expecting a normal chapel with normal priests and hopefully a bed.
I should have known better.
I see these two "priests" standing over a bloody alter and a dead adventurer. I approach hoping that they are in trouble and that a quest may come my way, only to have them summon headless zombies to eat my character's 35 int brains.
Why can't the priests bring me back to life instead of the zombies? Sheogorath knows I need it more.

Why can't the priests bring me back to life instead of the zombies? Sheogorath knows I need it more.
lol you got rick rolled by necromancer =P

This might not be so scary...but it is both weird and hilarious.
I was on my way to the fighters guild in Chorrol to return a quest, and when i had done that i wanted to look around for a bit. And sometimes i check if i have any bountys or so. I hade no bounty so i thought "hey lets enter the Mages Guild and say hello" so i went in. And to my biggest surprise....everyone in that place draw arms against me and completely bombs me with spells. I mean what did i do to them haha.
And after that little incident i got a message that i had been expelled from the Fighters Guild....that is just so weird!
Btw i think my Oblivion have a life of its own, you don't wanna know what it has done to me under my years of playing it

Ok, here it is.
One day, I was walking around in the IC. In a sewer, a goblin jumped out, and i flew out of my chair, screaming!

LHammonds, you did a fine bit of engineering on the AI for those werewolves. Hmmm....I need to send you the doctor's bill for that heart attack you gave me.

(good job!)
Hey now, you were warned! You should have come to my clinic...I would have fixed you up for free.

If something really "scariest" may be in Oblivion I think it need yet to be modded. Coming home to encounter a scornful wife that follows you around the house complaining about your's meetings with the lads in the local tavern so to drink sujama while sharing the last adventuring tales

Sorry dude...not gonna happen. We mod play this "fantasy" game to get away from that kinda crap. LOL

mine was during Lost Paladins of the Divines. i thought i had cleared out all the werewolves but when i turned around there was one of them with the freakin glowing eyes. It took me completely by surprise
Ah yes, that would be goldie #2 at the top of the stairs waiting for the right time to come down and say hello when you least expect it. muhahaha. Another victim.

It practically makes my day when i hear someone say they're afraid of caves or trolls in the game. I thought that i was completely desensitized by horror movies to be creeped out by anything in Oblivion, but those werewolves did it. Great job on that mod, L
and your personal statement on your profile reminds me of American Psycho, if that isn't at all relevant to the topic, it should be

I spent a day running around Ayleid ruins... happily skipping around, stepping on mud crabs... smashing up wolves etc.
I was walking along and saw a wall switch. It was a dead end, so I thought... "Must open a door..." and I opened it. I must have turned down the music or something, because out of nowhere came a loud "AAARRRRGGGGGHHHHHHHHH" noise, and I spun around to find I'd been cornered by zombies. That was scary... I always get jumpy around zombies.

Hmmm... Scariest moment, I'm not easily scared, and I am ashamed to say this, but a Slaughterfish scared the living hell out of me. I was swiming, minding my own business when I get hit. So I turn around, but see nothing. So I remain still to see if something comes out swinging, no result and I still get hit! So I look down and I see 3 slaughterfish nibling my toes! I hate those slow little sharks.

There is very little that can scare a long time VG player in Oblivion. It has not the atmosphear to do it, like a Silent Hill or a Resident Evil could do, it also lacks the enemies and even the scripts to do it, like a DooM3 could.
Only occasions when I jump is when I complete a dungeon, rememebering having cleared it and I start to climb back to surface, the tension goes down and... BUMP... I get hit in my face from something. But it happens veeery rarely.

My scariest moment was when i encountered my shadow self in the grove of reflection in SI. Imagine my suprise when i enter a room with strange foliage, and a dark version of myself in black madness armour attacks me with a huge claymore and a summoned flesh atronach and kills me in one hit! I was level 32, and when i checked, my difficulty was all the way up. Oooops! anyway, i kept that part as a permanant save, and it still scares me a little to this day.

Sadly I can't think of any more scary moments. Oblivion just isn't designed to be scary, and I'm easily scared...

One of my first times playing; I think my character was maybe 3rd level.
I was meandering around some ruined fort just west of Roxy Inn (I forget which one), I was preparing to enter the door, buffing myself with detection spells, when an NPC Khajiit adventurer comes bolting out of the door with a summoned scamp companion, and rushes right past me.
I was quite confused, spinning about to see what was going on, when the troll that was pursuing the NPC exited the door, and decided I was easier pickings than the Khajiit. Scared the bejeezus out of me, and took me down in about two swipes before I even had a chance to draw my sword.
