Hello,
I have a weird problem that just started recently when I am indoors usualy near a wall or door or some times just looking in a particular direction just right the screen will go black, HUD still up. When I move the mouse to look in a different spot the blackness goes away and everything is fine until I look at the offending region again then Blackness again.
Does anyone what causes this and how to fix it, I am running FCOM with alot of other mods, never had this problem until I reinstalled my game. Game is running much better now but now I have this weird bug. (And no it's not the Nvidia black screen bug, been there, fixed that)
Thanks
macmert

Are you sure you fixed the nvidia bug? your description fits the problem...

This sounds like the infamous Nvidia black screen. It happens under certain conditions when using an Nvidia video board. A new update to the fix is available here:
http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=17947If you do not have an nvidia board, this will not work for you.

I downloaded that fix "just in case" I ran into the problem but I never did until I downloaded a specific mod the other day. Also since that mod I have suddenly gone from always having Zero Bloat in my save games according to Wrye Bash, to having bloat in my save games according to Wrye Bash.
After running into the black screen error I installed Deadly Reflex and I didn't really like it for myself, and it occurred to me that the scripted magic effects from deadly reflex may be the actual culprit of the bloat.
I'm planning to remove both these mods and go back to a savegame prior to both, BUT!
I'm concerned that I won't be able to completely remove the changes (especially from Deadly reflex). I'll start a new thread addressing this particular part of the problem though.
The pertinent thought is, if this happened after making a significant change to your game maybe the answer is to remove that variable. Just a thought.

Just deactivated a bunch of mods to track down the issue, and also installed the latest nividia black screen bug fix. Nothing changed the problem is still happening but I did notice that the screen only goes black when in sneak mode.
Any suggestions?
Thanks

Have you tried installing the Nvidea patch yet? Come to think of it, I may have been in sneak mode when I ran into this issue also, since I was exploring a castle mod that didn't recognize my "ownership" (harvest containers).
I think I'm convinced to try the patch I just worry about messing with video card when it basically works.. Make sure you create a "Restore Point" prior to installing it if you haven't yet.

What Nvidia patch are you referring too?
I have the most recent black screen bug fix installed ver 1.0.2.
I have the version 6.14.0011.7519 drivers installed for my nVidia GeForce 8800GTS512 card installed.
Is their a gfx driver patch for oblivion?

I had this too. I had HDR lighting on, and when I switched it off, the bug was gone.
Maybe that works for you too?

I figured this one out, I had "Specular Pass" turned off in my "TweekOblivion" INI settings. As soon as I turned "Specular Pass" back on every thing was fine.
Thanks to all those who responded, I hope this info helps those out there that are having this problem also.
As a side note: This problem only occurred in interior cells, while sneaking, with other actors present. (It was especially bad in the IC guard towers.)

Well I just noticed this problem, usually seems to be only in interior spaces. First I tried the nVidia Black Screen Fix which did not help.
Then I checked the Specular Pass in my ini. Unfortunately it was already on... I am still trying to figure out what it is. Sneaking does not seem to have an effect on it for me.

Get Tweakedoblivion and use the "profiles" tab (I think thats what it's called) and start messing around with different gfx setttings with HDR on/off, Bloom on/off, etc....
Thats all I did.

Make sure you backup your oblivion.ini first.

CompacFeedbackSystem, does this issue happen in newly added areas by mods, or in the original game areas? If it's just in the new areas it's likely not covered by the fix. Some mods may recreate the conditions that cause the bug. If it's in the original game areas, send the fix to the bottom of your load order provided the other fixes haven't worked, this might overwrite any changes made in other mods that have undone the good work of the fix.
PM me if I can help, I'm not a regular visitor to the forums.

It does happen in original areas... I actually just reinstalled oblivion. Still have this bug... can't be anything in the ini since I have reset it multiple times with no luck. nVidia Black Screen Fix is last in the load order... but no luck.

What OS are you using? From what I've herd XP works best, Oblivion doesn't like vista to much. Since you have reinstalled Oblivion this sounds like a more global issue that has to do more with your systems ability to handle to graphics requirements of the game. I have a fairly monster PC that should tear through oblivion but I still have loads of issues. Make sure your windows graphics setting is set to "best quality"
not "best performance" (this caused huge graphics problems for me). I'd also use "tweakedoblivion" and try adjusting things that have to do with lighting, reflections, and shader effects.
Just keep experimenting and hopefully you'll find a solution to the problem, for me it was the specular pass setting.

I am using XP... This machine has Vista, but I don't use it... heh
My machine has a quad core processor(Intel QX6700), 2 GB RAM, and 2 BFG Tech 8800 GTX cards in SLI config.
I have gfx settings on "best quality" ... I am thinking something might be related to the nvidia driver version... I never had this problem before and the only thing that has changed since the last time I played Oblivion is an nvidia driver update and a directx update.
I am thinking the video drivers might have done something. I guess I will have to figure it out. Thanks for the help!

I'm actually using Vista and a second rate Nvidea 7350 - I'll get around to changing it but it works ok for now. I rolled back the latest released Nvidea driver that just came out in the last week or two, and went back to the one released around May, much better and no more problems. The black screen fix didn't do anything for me.

that IS the nvidia bug... i cann tell i have one... you have 2 options... either you live with it, or you realize that the patch is almost useless... unless you use a combination of various patches that do not totally work either... :S sorry man.. it's just that i learned to live with it

Oooohh, opps, thanks for the info, I don't like giving bad advice, thanks for setting me straight.
As for all the discussion about video problems I have a couple of tips that worked miracles for me.
Basic system specs, GFX Card: NVIDIA 8800 GTS 512, 3Gigs RAM (4Gig dual DDR-800 installed, 3Gig XP32 limitation), AMD Athelon 64 x2 Dual Core 6000+, RAID1 500Gig HDD 3Gig/s, Sound blaster X-Fi Fata1ty Pro.
Ok my game used to crash about every 5-15minutes and was VERY VERY laggy outdoors and I thought WTF my system should be able to handle this game pretty well so whats the problem. Well then I opened up the NVIDIA control panel and started changing settings. I probably went through about 20 different hardware configurations before I got a feel for what everything was doing but what I discovered is that if I started with the default settings and then changed everything that had a better performance comment to the better performance option available my game runs great. I litterally have a CTD or lockup about every 2hours of game play now, way better than every 5-15min.
Attached is a screen shot of my hardware settings.

PS - I can't resist - it is "advice".

Microsoft's spell checker has it wrong. You have given advice, you are advising someone.

I've got HDR on, a nVidia 7800 GTX, and the nVidia Black Screen Fix loaded in (even though the code was merged into all of Kivan's Unofficial Patches). I'm running 175.19 with XP SP3.
There are two things you can do that might help. First, move the nVidia Black Screen Fix mod as far down in the load-order as possible, so it will take precedence over mods that change interior cells.
Second thing is you can run Wrye Bash's nVidia Fog Fix on mods.
I helped out chakka64 on his black screen problem a while back. I provided him with links for FCOM Helper, all of Kivan's patches, OBMM, and Wrye Bash. Maybe some of what we discussed might help.
