Is there a easy way for a low HP theif/archer class to complet the smuggled weapons quest without heavy combat against the Imperials in the cave?
Yes...it is called "Amulet of Shaddows". use it and you cant go wrong.

Considering the proximity of the smuggler's caverns to the location of the Amulet is extreme, a more feasible suggestion is to use an Invisibility potion. Just leave your companion outside the cave, sneak in and talk to the smuggler leader and then walk out (the leader will have told his accompliances not to attack you). But that's only if you choose to let the smugglers escape.
feasabillity nothing. Its only a problem if he starts out playing bloodmoon as, otherwise, he should alredy have it. It lasts longer than invisibillity, and works the same.
Is it still profitable to do it the sneaky way, or dont you get anything?
well, you get more if you kill them, because you get their stuff to keep. otherwise, when you take it, they attack you.
Another way to complete the smuggler quest
Why don't you get another companion if the imperial can't take on the smugglers by her/him self the only companion I know of which isn't in a mod is that mercenary guy standing outside the palace coutyard.
But you could train yeah I know it sounds dull but it's the only way you will them by yourself. Don't train in Solthsiem it's too dangerous for a low level character as you know so go back to Vvardefel and get some training the quick way by paying trainers if you can afford it or the slow go to the wilderness grazeands perhaps because it's probably the least hostile place and start getting your skills up.

you wouldnt be able to take the Merc with you--he is only available in Mournhold.
not always, if you download the pmb you can make him follow you on and then go to fort frostmoth

Well, I was talking "Un-Modded". I have Xbox anyway so it wouldn't matter to me. With basic things apliad, he is only available in mournhold. The guy that helps you with that quest isn't a merc, he is a companion FOR THAT QUEST only.

hmmm.....I'm lvl 26 and I can BARELY take on ONE smuggler by myself (and I'm a fighter with about 230 life and 120 strength)....and I can't complete the quest by talking..... I walked past the guards with invisibility but even their boss attacks me when he sees me, so...... 
p.s. .....constant invisibility on daedric shield rocks!
