This will probably result in a big fat NO, but I'd like to know if there are plans to begin development of these areas as supplements to MEMod?

Why?

Just to set the story of my character......

As printed in LOTR Chapter "The Last Debate"....

QUOTE
And then to each of the great ships that remained Aragorn sent one of the Dunedain, and they comforted the captives that were aboard and bade them put aside fear and be free.

Weariness was not something common to Andes Rhei, but the shackles that bit into his wrist and ankles, and the fretful pace set by the Vitar were taxing to even his well conditioned form. Three days since their departure from the shores of Shatar (City of the Corsairs) and little to no wain had been allowed. Never had a ship gone so far, so quickly…but his masters would have it no other way.

Prior to embarking, rumors had spread throughout the slaves quarters of a huge battle to take place to the far north. Celebrations could be heard throughout the streets. The slavers had made sure all oarers were well fed.

Andes’ hadn’t cared. His life no longer mattered, so what care he of tomorrow. What care he of life.

The body of the man next to Andes suddenly ceased to move. Blood trickling from the wounds in his wrist and ankles. Too much had been this task for Ziran.

This will probably result in a "its in the book, its in the mod" from the Devs, so you can probably assume it is. However, from what i've read there aren't many descriptions of Umbar and the Harad, apart from the Harad being a wasteland/desert type place. Umbar was a great portcity, nd one of the great havens, but i'm wondering what it'll be like. Depending on the timeline it could be occupied by a nummber of different groups, who could alter how it looks. Comments?

BTW:I'm not really sure what the rest of the above post is about huh.gif

Uh - oh...
This question was indeed asked and answered elsewhere (I know this 'cause I asked it). The result was: It is in the books, so it will be in MEMod.
So you can be lloking forward to playing the chara you invented wink.gif

Leaving this thread open for discussion of this specific question. Don't even dare thinking about another question concerning how large the landmass of MEMod will be <_<

Fair enough, great one. Honestly it didn't cross my mind, but i guess you would know from past experience.

So, what's Umbar going to be like. From what i've read (i just reread the Appendix A of LotR, pertaining that time period), i'm thinking it'll have a fort-like feel, since it is right out on the sharp end of Gondor's realm (depending on the timeline, of course wink.gif ). The port will be pretty big, so i'm looking forward to the new ship models.

As a nice comparison (in my head, i don't know if it will translate well) i'm thinking of a 1930's French Foriegn Legion fort. I'm not sure why, but it just seemed to fit well. I mean, it looks out over the desert, has to be manned against attacks at any time... is this making sense? Anyway, other opinions?

Isn't Umbar also a big city? I mean, not only a fort where some soldiers are garrisoned just waiting for war, but a real city with markets, houses and so on, as it was a trading outpost of the Numenorians in the first place (with a giant harbour). But when it comes to how it is lookin I also woul appreciate that french legion fort look. Just because of the appearance.

Yeah. I guess that didn't come across so much in my post.

We also have to remember it was also a historical city; it was where some of the Faithful ended up after the destruction of Numenor. When it is lost (i forget the year) to the Haradrim, it is a major blow to the Gondorians self-esteem. Perhaps there would be memorials to the landings, something like that. If thats included it would be a nice little detour in-game, to walk around a museum detailing the destruction of Numenor and the establishment of the kingdom... Ah, one can dream.

Umbar is a great coastal area, and the city within it holds the same name. If you ever go to Israel, go to Tel Aviv, that big city on the coast. I imagine Umbar would look similar to that, with some vegetation, mountains, the city nestled in the small valley, arabic-style buildings.

As for Harad, it has both large deserts and large jungles. But once again we'll have to see.

Also... During the mod-time is Umbar controlled by the Haradrim or Gondor?

MEMod Timeline will not be released, and no information in relevance to the Timeline will be released.

Is there any actual description of it as a city in any of the books? I know we can't expect a "Well, if you go past this monument and turn left after twenty paces, you end up outside another monument", but perhaps something short for us to use as a reference.
Also, on the jungle point, i'm looking forward to this now since the MW engine hasn't really been tested in this sort of environ yet (unless there's a mod for it?), so it will be interesting how it handles it.

This funny , cuz, I've just crawled out from under a rock and finally bought Morrowind ... ( should have paid the extra 20 bucks and bought GOTY... but hey, it was $8.50 ... smile.gif )

anyway, I'm working on building up my scripting and world-building skills ( I had practiced with Terragen throughout Morrowind's Development time ... and then lost interest) ... so that I can apply here to help out in the mod .... well.. the funny part is that I want to practice by making a Umbar mod ... tongue.gif

Umbar should be a province, with a major port-city/capital with the same name ...

Architecturally, it should have a central "old fort" region whose architecture should be OLD Numenorean ... and then, in wave our from there, Exiled architecture that has Harad influences ... both light and heavy in different areas ... With sections of the province strictly given to one or another culture ... thuse having towns/boroughs within the major complex of Umbar ... Remember that the old Numenoreans ... mostly what have been called Black Numenoreans ... would have been extremely proud and Haughty and would have build areas just for themselves .. walled off from the rabble. .... something that the Later corsairs would have continued to do, since the civil war that exiled them to Umbar was over blood-purity ...

What would be cool is ... what ever is done in Pelargir, the Devs should try to mirror in Umbar ... make Umbar seem like the Yang to Pelargir's Yin ... smile.gif .... the Agent Smith to Gondor's Neo ...

I missed the Jungle reference... and there is nothing in Tolkien's writings that would support or deny that .... there isn't much of anything, actually ... BUT ... you do get a sence of Tolkien mirroring Mediteranean and Arabic "pirates" and culture clashes when refering to Umbar ... You would have more of the Hot Desert/ with Semi-Arid Forest, instead of Jungle ... but then, as always, I could be wrong.

First time poster, long time reader.

I realize that the last post on this topic was about a month ago, but still...

On the topic of monuments at Umbar, there is/was (depending on the timeline) a huge monument to the landing of Ar-Pharazon that humbled the might of Sauron. It was a great stone orb on a pillar. It was one of the big sites in Middle-earth, right up there with the Argonath, et al.

I believe it was destroyed by the Haradrim or some such group when the city changed ownership one time.

Anyway, I apologize for thread necromancy, if that is what I have done.

-slight edit... it was Ar-Pharazon's landing that humbled the might of Sauron, not the monument. Although, I'm sure he really didn't like the monument too. I dunno, that sentence seemed to be a little vague to me, needed a touch up.-

I believe that Umbar was a great tradecity (althought almost everything was stolen) becouse it was home of the Umbar pirates...
