Reason for tagging as opposed to categories:

Pictures fit into more than one category frequently. If you have an image of a character riding a horse near some ruins at sunrise, so you categorise it as "sunrise", "animals", "ruins", or what? People will probably make any of these choices. With tagging, you can assign all three, which makes it much easier to locate images based on their content.

The tagging system would be predefined, like the file database, rather than free-reign. One thing I have sort of learnt from the file database is that too many tags is a bad thing; the sheer amount of tags in the file database makes it more confusing and takes more time to get your head around and it's something I don't really want to replicate in the image database. Your picture description would probably be tagged "aesthetic" , "outdoors" in my tagging system :X

Why not make something like "Picture of the month" or top 100 images.

Don't know if this has been suggested, but probably has, What the Image Share needs is a image search, much like the normal search. We have almost 725 pages of images with 12 images per page, and sometimes it gets hard to remember what page your favorite image has moved to. The search just needs to work like the regular File Search, that is, you could search for images with a word in the title, and the advanced search, where you could look up image author, adult only, and other relevant search topics. The only thing I suggest is that the two searches be seperate of one another because it would be trying to have to sort through both, files AND images at the same time.

Well, I expounded at length about the advantages of using specific tags earlier in this thread or in the previous one, and this statement is utterly discouraging. There's hardly any point at all in adding tags if they're to be that broad and nonspecific. I say don't even bother if it's going to be like that. It would be no better than categories.

Hi people.

I was thinking. I think it would be great if you had a "search images" option. Because there's a really cool image I want to show my friend, along with all the others, but I don't really want to go through 300 odd pages looking for it. so maybe search tags, name, decription. it would be really usefull. thanks

Additionally, I find the ratings here to be almost meaningless, judging from the ratings on mods, since most people rate either 1 or 10, and very little in between. And since most of those who rate 1 end up getting banned, the ratings are seriously skewed. And there are those who consider 10 to be the default, and anything less than 10 requires justification or else the rating is removed. For this reason, there's what's called a "file drawer effect" which I see in myself, where I never rate anything unless I think it's worth a 10. Just from what I read in this thread, I see everyone seems to have different philosophies on how to rate things, which makes it mean even less.

Rather than eliminate the top 25 list, as you suggest TheLeeHarvey, why not leave it there only for those who want to use it? Those who don't want to be included in it (or don't care) need only select the aforementioned hypothetical option to disallow ratings and/or comments and be automatically excluded.

I think most important is to make sure the tag system is meaningful, objectively descriptive rather than subjectively content-judged, and has the option for "not" displaying any images which bear particular tags.

Totally agree with you! thumbsup.gif

Can't comment more that you already did, I just checked the top 25 Image list recently........!!!

I'm there with 4 picture, (no offense to the people who rated and comment), but the fact that there are a lot of good picture, in terms of so called, ''artistic way'',whitout rating or comments, makes me feel that your suggestion have more sense and hopefully ... sensibility, than the image share area looks and deserves.

PS: Kudos for this!...not that it matters, I guess.......!?!

The image rating in this web is really funny. You can see how the same people vote the same uploader with higher notes (maybe all of them are from the same family because they vote all together xDD) and with lower notes other uploaders. The ratings of some top 25 images are very instructive xD.
For me is more valuable the viewing rating than the rating.

Idea: the same uploader can't have more than one or two pics in the top 25 images. I prefer to see a variety of styles and if i want to see a lot of pics of one uploader i can tag his/her name and to see his/her pics.

(It seems there are a lot of children around in summer on Tesnexus).

There is no need for that. You know who took the picture by seeing who uploaded it. But if you want to see other pictures that person took, click on their name which will take you to their profile. At the bottom, you will see 3 tabs: Files, Images, Friends.

I'll let you figure it out from this point on. wink.gif

LostScout
I would like to see limits on the number of images which one individual can upload in a given period of time. For example, 3 in a 24 hour period. Many good images can be lost because they are buried in a sea of submissions. Choose your best images and upload them, then wait a while. Just my opinion, but I think that would increase the variety of submissions seen and maybe encourage others to participate. wink.gif

LostScout, although I understand your reasoning behind this request, I do not think it matches the spirit of this site.

It is not the fault of the image posters that the image navigation is fairly basic at this point in time.

I think it would be better to focus on what can be done with navigation, searching and reports (top / random lists) rather than imposing limits on uploaded content.
