@bobsobol:

Just being connected to the internet puts you at risk, no matter what browser you use. You don't even have to be surfing the web to get a virus. Its very unlikely, but its still a possability.

I use IE because I see no reason to use anything else. It does exactly what I need. Gets me to the sites I like, saves them for the future, and gets me to some fun online game. The only real problem Ive had with IE in my 12 years of usage is when I mistakenly download files that are or have viruses in them. But im generally really careful about what I download. Thanks to AVG 8.0, it scans sites before I go to them. But I know that nohting is perfect, and it can miss things.

I looked up the definition of "web browser" and it is defined as "a program used to view HTML documents" and based off that, thats what IE does.

Also, technicly, Sefari IS based off something. If its not the first, its roots can be traced back to something similar. And since its from Appple, its probably from Microsoft.

Just to let you guys know, on top of all the problems Mozilla had with their servers dying... firefox 3 has already been confirmed to contain a day zero vulnerability at critical level...

worse yet it seems it's a legacy vulnerability from FF2 so it's likely some websites that could previously do things like rootkit via FF2 can also do the same in FF3... oh... so much for security... I mean that's why people get FF?

Sorry =P, it just makes me laugh everytime I hear about FF and just how horrible the browse actually is. I think for years to come... I'll be sticking to Opera, sure nothing is totally secure... but atleast it's more secure then IE and way more secure then FF... anyone that says FF is secure... has brought the words of FF kiddies.... I mean sure... you can get plug-ins to "add" security... but what if said plug-in contains the very kind of virus' your actually trying to protect yourself from.

I stick by it... FF FTL, Opera FTW =P. Everything you could actually ever need... built in... and still faster then FF(without plug-ins slowing it down) or IE. Way more standard compatible then either IE or FF.

Anyways as I said earlier, remember your web browser is NOT a firewall. So I'd advise anyone that thinks they are safe because they have xxx web browser to get at least windows firewall turned on ASAP, get an anti-virus (AVG is good, apart from the free version has been known once in a while to generate fake virus', but most anti-virus' do these days) and get a spyware remover.

Adios.

P.S. I work on web servers for a living in a datacenter so I know just how vulnerable computers can be... you'd be surprised how easy it is to find open ports on a machine as well as their association... via port scanning. Firewalls close of unused ports thus massively lower the amount of total vulnerabilities.

Internet Explorer ftw? You ARE kidding, right? That IE7 is teh devil incarnate. Never worked properly on my gaming rig. Luckily it worked long enough for me to d/l both Opera and Firefox. Mostly I use Opera because it displays information better when I am administrating the board I own, but my email is BT Yahoo webmaik which doesn't like Opera overmuch, hence I use Firefox for that. Also I find when paying bills online most payees secure payment gateways work better on Firefox.

I was so relieved to see it clearly isn't only me that has a deep suspicion and mistrust of IE!

Fire fox Beats Any browser Microsoft trys to force us to install.
Mr V
I don't see why not to use Internet Explorer, as it comes with the computer. Firefox has become quite popular, although I don't see many benefits.

I suppose FireFox is popular, or "cool" or something like that.

IE is installed by default on computer (and I never delete it, I don't know why)

You don't because you can't, IE is embedded in the windows system process. WMP was as well up until XP yet Microsoft still maintains that it's a necessity for IE to be embedded even though it was a mistake to do so and they had the opportunity to rectify this mistake with the Vista operating system. Why would they remove their built in spyware when they get so much useful info from it every time you use it? Luckily for us FireFox has gotten around Windows dependency on IE for updates and now I never use it for any reason.

Open source all the way baby! If it weren't for the even more inherent problems associated with Linux I wouldn't even be using Windows.

It doesn't really matter what kind of browser your using,as long as you have a browser and security, like windows live one care,I'm glad to see people aren't boring and use the same thing wink.gif, firefox is a great browser also Internet explorer(although they should change the name smile.gif),i don't know so much about opera but just at least be happy you got a browser,I tried firefox and see no improvement whatsoever, just a skin change,it's your security you need to watch, not your browser, don't be fooled into things you don't even know,Internet Explorer is highly stable, like comcast and atnt yahoo,I used both of them and they both have they same freakin speed guys,so be happy you got internet and all this tech wink.gif, also it's true,no matter what kind of freaking browser you use, your always at risk,no hiding that, but if you have security, you lower your chance of identity theft, hacking, viruses, accidental illegal download, kidnapped, some random person coming to your house and is actually a serial killer but you don't know that, humiliation, weird things, and stuff you don't like.

Regarding Opera and TesNexus Login.

In order to enable login, TesNexus needs to have its site preferences edited. Otherwise, if you have Opera's number 1 rated security features turned on, which is the default settings that install with Opera out-of-the-box, you'll need to permit TesNexus to save cookies and believe you are using Internet Explorer or Firefox. (Because Robin, like the other 95% of webmasters in interspace doesn't seem to want to be bothered with the measly 5% market share Opera holds.)

Websites like this are what have kept Opera a relatively obscure internet contender, when in fact, it is THE MOST SECURE WEB BROWSER. PERIOD. THE FASTEST. THE SMALLEST DOWNLOAD FILE. AND IT PIONEERED TABBED BROWSING. I've been using Opera as a single-window, multi-page tabbed application on my desktop since 1998. It NEVER opens a second, third, fourth, and so on. . . page, unless you ask it to. Firefox tries to copy that feature, but it doesn't REALLY work. Popups still open new window clutter. Internet Explorer 7 claims to incorporate tabbed browsing, but as usual, Bill Gates pulls another slick trick and IE7 doesn't even TRY to work.

And little OPERA, the best browser in the world gets sheep-dipped.
So here's what you do: If any website won't allow itself to work in Opera, just right-click and select "Edit Site Preferences" from the popup menu.

In the dialog that follows:

uncheck "delete new cookies when exiting Opera"
allow all popups, or open popups in the background
enable JavaScript
Mask as Internet Explorer, or Mask as Firefox

The order and wording of these items may differ according to which version of Opera you are using. Also, there are other options, but they don't seem to be relevant to this issue.

Reload the webpage that you've just right-clicked on, and amazingly, you'll find that you are able to use Opera with all of its infinite resources, immediately, on a website that pretended to be an exclusive servant to the Mozilla dragon/dinosaur.

No, I do not work for Opera. I used it when it was free, with the stipulation that an advertising banner ran inside the browser's toolbar (not on the webpages) and when I one day received some disposable income, I ordered a paid subscription, just to thank them for the privilege of allowing me to use their product free for so many years. (The following year, they released the full version without cost, so now it's free for everyone).

So please, don't get fooled by Firefox and Internet Explorer. They record every keystroke, and it is my guess, keep them stored on their servers. And one day, when the Commander-in-Chief figures out how to spell the necessary words to write a new one of his "add-a-scripts" to the constitution, those brave CEOs from Google who refused to hand over their "user search history" records to the US Party, will become acquainted with waterboarding, that controversial technique used on suspected terrorists. And they will spill their beans. And you and I and everyone who has ever "Googled" someone will become sitting ducks.
Whereas Opera keeps few records, by default, unless you bypass their security and use the above mentioned settings globally.

It's Firefox btw with a small f. And it's abbreviated Fx not FF.

Firefox or Opera both are good

Firefox is the smallest internet browser i am aware of (maybe besides opera), and its moddability (if thats a word) far exceeds internet explorer. Its easy to navigate and has cool mods and addons. I can't say for sure however comparing it to opera. i haven't had experience with it, nor do i plan to, Fire Fox works just fine for mel

Epiphany is my favorite browser overall, partially because it's completely free software (Firefox's license has problems, though they probably don't matter for the average user). It doesn't have as good a download manager as Opera or as many plugins as Mozilla/Firefox, but it's still a pretty solid browser.

Of course it could still be argued that telnet (or ssh) is best.

Since other people seem to like posting their browser's download size, epiphany is around 4 Mb (although it requires a number of libraries to run)

Firefox 3 FTW!

Firefox is the best IB. it was a bit slow to load, but with Firefox 3.0 the starting is very and i mean very fast.

I use both Opera and Firefox.

I guess I am sentimental as Opera shares it's heritage with the classic browser Netscape, Netscape itself was always miles better than IE for me.

Just installed Firefox v3. Less memory, more CPU.
My Opera installs are less stable when it's running.
I don't know why, but I'm rapidly coming to hate it.

Much of the new Opera 9.5 improvements are subtle.
Downloads don't break, or at least they resume.
Better compliance with .torrent eases firewall config.
irc/xdcc just works, after all the fuss I had before.
(too bad they dropped ICQ a while ago though)
The built-in mail client can read mail out loud.
And so-called "widgets" are much faster/smoother.
And it uses less memory and less cpu than before.

I'm currently demoting firefox to second-string only.

EDIT: Pointless update follows that no-one will read...

Finished migrating Firefox pages to Opera install.
Config has been mostly painless, even backed up bookmarks.

We'll see what happens when they're out of "point O".
IE 8 is tantalizing if they can match promises.
Planning to install Safari just so I can taunt it.....

I used IE for a long time till when i was at a friends house and his dad (who works for Fed-Ex) had Firefox on his computer.... I have been using Firefox for 8+ years now, and haven't had a single problem.

I once reformatted and started using IE again, oh so very frustrating, i don't know how i ever settled for it before hand.

Which browser I prefer? Whatever browser 99% of the rest of the world doesn't use. yes.gif

Opera fan here. Opera 9.5 is running very stable on my machine, with enough functionality to be usable and a much smaller footprint than IE.

Opera is the safest bet of all the major web browsers out there IMO. Only 1% market share makes it a very unlucrative target for the hackers whereas FireFox and Internet Explorer are significantly bigger and more tempting targets. The more people who download FireFox 3.0 and leave IE the less safe FireFox is going to be in the long run. Adding to that, the more features (=more exploitable code) it gets the more like IE it's going to become. I wish the browser programmers would stop jamming in all the functionality they can into their products and go for simplicity and security instead. That would essentially kill the whole malware scene and their reliance on browser exploits.

Sad but true. unsure.gif

Opera + Nod32 + timely patching of all software (including Adobe Flash player, Adobe Reader, QuickTime etc) + all unnecessary Windows XP functionality disabled (e.g. TelNet, NetBios, uPnP etc) = as safe as you can be, though it still nowhere near 100% safety.

Cheers, UQF

I'm currently using Eshme's Bodies, but this mod is so fantastic that I'll possibly replace my body mod with Exnem FEC just because of this. You have gotten another 10 from me.

FireFox just sometimes doesn't work for some online media, and just can't load certain websites, and it's lame.

I use internet Explorer, mainly 'cos I havnt used or even realy seen another web browser... Firefox pops up a lot on the web (like when a website says it works best on firefox) but Ive never realy fancied it... Are there any special featurs on certain web browsers, like special things they can do, 'cos I dont know much about the other ones...?
oranges
Hedero, DL IE tab add-on and you'll be able to render the page with a single click on the icon in a status bar.

GreenDrag
I've been using IE for years now, and I only experienced problems when I, I repeat I made them, by my foolish actions.
I don't see why people want to change to firefox, since I olnly experience changes in the looks... and one of my friends complain about the 3.0, because when he right-clicks, the browser freezes... and things like that.
Haven't tried Opera, or any other browsers yet... and since IE is just fine for me, I'll remain at that...
Meltedskul
after updating my opera to 9.5. i was zmazed opera is the best its better than firefox i think firefox tries to be like opera at times like with the add-ons. No offense firefox is good but in my word opera is better, opera reminds me of classic internet browsers like netscape(which owns the classics. IE is just horrible the worst security, the worst speed , worst pop up blocker it just bad and after getting IE7 it was even slower but i dont care opera and firefox is good but to me opera is better
chaotic_angel3
Firefox for me thank you. The security on it is grand, it has great speeds, you can mod the thing to death with add-ons if you want and it will still run great. Its even better now with the save and quit option
Meltedskul
blink.gif omg opera owns im sry i take back everythingabout firefox opera stomps it out badly i mean i can talk to the internet and it does what i say o.o and the widgets are really good and bittorrent compatible wow mnore to come from opera 9.5
