I think I already know the answer, but I'm going to ask the question.
How difficult would it be to set up chat channels, or private chat rooms here on the Nexus? I know, I know... i can go to all those other places that have what I'm asking for. It is just that here is where all my cyber-friends are.
I would even be willing to have to stumble over the addtional advertisements which would probably be required to fund it. I would even < draws deep breath > be willing to pay to have them. Because this is where I like to be.

Though I like the option of instant communication (as in Eve Online), in forums you are more likely to meet your friends. Especially when many of us are in different time zones.
Having said that, the question to ask is, "what will nexus loose by having chat channels?"
I will probably rarely use them- but it opens up the possibility of hosting real-time events, get togethers, discussion groups etc.
edit: added "real-time"

hey sam... how is life in space...
so..no technical problems present themselves vis a vis chat channels...
oh and the will of Dark One to want to devote yet more of his limited time to something like this..
perhaps i should have started a poll... if only i knew how...

That is a great idea, and i would use it everyday, and help with funding to get it going.

I'm pretty sure there used to be one, back in early 2007 I think.. Maybe longer ago, maybe less. I don't remember what happened to it. The only thing I know is that it was around before the release of SupCom.

I dont know about the golden olden days...but I wish we had chat. Think it would be cool. I am a paid for lifer but I'd be willing to pay a bit more for it.

Yeah. There use to be an IRC channel you could chat on awhile ago Povuholo.
But an actual chat feature would be nice.

The only issue I see with this is the difficulty in moderating it. There are enough little kids running around posting nonesense in threads and comments. Wouldn't take long for one of them to find, and then make use of any sort of chat system. If anything like this were to be setup, it would probably benefit more from being administered by people outside the Nexus staff, and from not being related to any particular community. A community wide chat channel, with the number of people we have around here, would be absolute chaos. Most things chat, are best with fewer than 20 people talking at once. Meaning that it would be more fitting for smaller sections of the community.

I wouldn't be interested in forum chat or moderating it. That's why I use Yahoo, MSN or Trillian IM when communicating in real-time with my buddies but it is rare (even on a team) that chat is necessary except at the design / brainstorming stage.
I suppose one way to handle this without requiring Dark0ne to program something is to setup a thread like this one that contains the necessary information for those interested in chatting. Maybe a link to a chatroom page that shows just Oblivion-related rooms and how many people are in them and such.
I currently have a couple of clunky web-based chat apps on my site right now:
chat test 1 and
chat test 2. I'll see if it is easy to get a
Jabber Web-Chat page setup.
As Vagrant0 has mentioned, moderating such a beast would be the biggest hurdle to overcome.

There was a briefly lived Chat facility. The problem was most times you tried to use it no one was there. Although the forum has a large theoretical membership only a few are 'active'. Most are here to down load mods or are relics of history. With the different time zones too it wasn't often you'd be able to have any meaningful conversations. I use MSN and any member of the forum who wants to can contact me that way for chat. Through that means I have had direct webcam and voice links too. (I don't have a webcam myself.) I feel that is enough.
BTW we never mooted the idea of moderating the chat room.

Hmmmm...this sounds interesting. I would really like this idea.
Besides....aside from Oblivion modding and music producing I am also am Irc op on some channels...I don't know but I have an username and a right to register a new channel.
Maybe with feedback and a little thinking I might use that channel for this site...and/or maybe for other OB modding sites too.
How about that???
P.S. For those who want to talk to me on mIRC....PM me and I will tell you what server I use and on what chans you can find me.
Cheers

The only reason I would like one is to post mod ideas and get instant responses instead of waiting a few days for even one awnser.
For example:
Kresselack: How about somebody making XXXXX item featured in XXXXXX game?
RolfTheUber: Oooooh great idea! That matches perfectly!
ModMaster3000: I could probably whip that up.
Kresselack: Thanks
DrEmOrA: Can you make a blue version too?
That takes about one minute or less in a chatroom.
