AlienSlof: Some of these replies are a tad rude. Nothing wrong with a bit of roleplaying - after all, this game is classed as an RPG. It's a great bit of escapism.
I do something similar with my characters, though in a slightly different way. My lads are never 'me' - not surprising since they are always male and I'm female! I talk to them! Yeah, that's right, talk to them! I'm pleased when they do something I like, I tell them off when they're being bloody-minded. It's never 'I', always 'we' - where will we go next, what do you want to do, etc. They are like my buddies. For me the game is like an interactive movie.
And when I put the game down, I'm back in the real world with real friends and real problems. Nothing wrong with a bit of imagination.

Never. My characters are all dinstinct personalities from me. And I also realise that they are imaginary.

No offense, you might want to seek some professional help about that. Seems like you have a hard time differentiating a game from reality.

There's nothing wrong with some roleplaying, but when people have trouble seperating one world from the other, it can only be a bad thing. The concern wouldn't be as great if there weren't an increasing number of people commiting real life crimes as a reenactment of what some game character did. I mean, should someone really get that much enjoyment about the things their character does, because they controlled that character to do those things? Maybe I'm just too old and jaded.

Hmm, I think I can understand where you are coming from, however I haven't been "one" with any of my characters. But I see that one could get attached to a character, especially when the rpg has an exceptional story. This is what an rpg is. It gives you the ability to fantasize about being a part of it. Fiction book authors, song writers, they too have stories to tell (besides making a buck) about what they write about. I know these things because I write books and I am also a musician/song writer. So, the more well written it is, to pull you into the story to feel it, see it's imagery, know the things the author/writer wants you to feel.. the more you will feel a part of it.
Yes, one can go too far.
I can say I have once.. we all kow FF7 and the death of Aerithe, well that practically tore me apart and almost didn't want to continue the story from there. Why? Because the writers did exactly what they wanted. They wanted you to become a part of the story through the role playing and to feel the story. ^ ^
And yes,
I do believe you need to know your own personal boundaries too, but truthfully, have you never experienced a good book of fiction and appreciated how very descriptive it was? The more immersion there is, the more it pulls you in.
However, I'm not really into hack and slash. Infact, my first Oblivion character mapped the whole realm while harvesting plants for alchemy and skipped the main quest for a long time.

Apologies for sounding like 'that' movie.

i don't say i always play as i am the hero. I say there are special moments when you feel you are beside your char.
Okay i change the question. When did you first feel you are WITH your character?

Alienslof, it's kind of hard to roleplay someone you consider a person in his/her own right, imaginary, but still real in some way, like characters from good old books, like Sherlock Holmes or Margarita, with their own motives, personalities, problems, emotions and so on. Maybe it's something like you described.
I can't do a "myself in that game" thing, it's like manipulating a mindless empty puppet, there's no fun in that. And what of roleplaying... no idea. Maybe it' just it, I don't know.

Something about "one' with your character.
(Sorry my keyboard is screwing up, I might miss out a few letters.)
Can't remember exact words but screaming when he won a battle. His parents looking at him weird. That sorta stuff.

It's odd how you call first person perspective to be a character in third...
Its another thing if you use companion mods, etc.
There is no limit in theory to how far you role-play, but there is a limit because of the person.
I don't see role-play as a way to become a character and escape reality for a while, yes it could feel great and makes you want to say "What if this world is real... etc. etc." but because our society works on a norm, that idea is cut short....

Here is a question for you guys. You see - I have played Oblivion for more than a year.
I use hundreds of MODs to keep the game going. I think of Oblivion as an alternative
virtual world - nothing more nothing less. I still have a good time in the real world.
But to my (weird) question... and now please no answers or offers about "professional help" - thanks!
I'm a male and I have a female companion in the game. I downloaded her originally because she is
dam... pretty. Now after spending months together with her (in the game) I know I (my game character)
have fallen hopelessly in love with her - and want to marriage her in the game!!!
Anybody ever heard of a MOD with that kind of scenario - or is this just too crazy??

if i havent flamed because of my question, you cant be (but it is a bit weird)(but i'm really annoyed)

Sorry, never heard of such a MOD. Could it be because I have never looked for it, since the urge to marry a videogame character has never reached on me, hence it could even exist.

All the things I want to say to this comment will get me banned or something so I'll just leave it at this.
Maybe one day. *coughlolcough*
Hold up wasn't there a mod like this where you already get a wife and a kid who looks just like you when he grows up. Couldn't you just edit the mod to make the wife into the companion who you have?
