Hello. I am going to be writing a little fan-fiction soon and posting it here on the Forums, in the Druid's Garden section.

Now, this story is going to be somewhat graphic, with violence and "real-life struggles."

Now, my question is, "Is it okay to have a little bit of swearing in the story, just so long as it's not over-excessive and if I have a warning before the story?" unsure.gif

Thank you for your time. thanks.gif

Sincerely,
gman021

Don't use modern profanity (damn might be ok) but use Old English words like buggers, craven, tartan, scitan, skítkarl, fodder.
Be creative & make up some like this one (my favorite) Taffer, from the Thief games.

Using modern words is the quickest way to loose realism.

I would recommend not to curse much. I know I should not get excessive, and I censor anything myself in my words in every post I make anyway, but the Terms of Service, I'm pretty sure you need to read that. My advice, try not to swear often. I mean like don't get aggressive with it. I'm certain 5-20 words would be too much on this forum. I'm not really sure if a little bit is allowed, I sometimes can't control everything I say, but I try to.

Yes I know. I'm not talking about in posts. I'm talking about in fan-fiction.

It won't be excessive, only like 1-2 words a "Chapter." smile.gif

And it wouldn't be anything like the "F-Bomb"! no.gif

Over at Necrotania.com, all the authors are required to give a rating for their fiction: G rating, PG, or if need be R. And then they have the option of specifying what's in it, such as language, violence, sexual scenes, etc. If I was posting a fan fic here, I would do something similar at the very top. If it was rated R, then I post so in the topic's description.

Well, you could always use the wonderful words from Morrowind.
Fetcher. Nwah. Scrib sucker. Sugar eating fool. Son of a Hammerfell woman of negotiable virtue*.
Things like that.

I agree. I think that the language of the Elder Scrolls world is already there in colour for you to draw from, with more relevant references for the characters. I think that's the important thing, that whatever you write is familiar or relevant to your characters, not you or the reader. They would still have 'edge' if the mood is set right. It would just read better than 20/21st century english swearing.
Like hoots7 says, it breaks your bubble when you hear expressions that you hear in real life but never before in the game.
Good luck with it whatever you do.

Well, that's the thing. It's not exactly pertaining to the TES Universe... that's why I was wondering.
