I recently recived about $200 for my birthday, I was just wondering currently what the best graphics card for running Oblivion is. confused.gif thanx in advace for the info.

At the moment I would say the geforce 8800GT, but you'd best check out their website, they have started launching cards for the geforce 9 series, correct me if I'm wrong. Although you might have to save up a bit for that one.

P.S. These type of posts belong in the Sysytem Advisor section of the forum.

Check out this link. It help guide me to what was available out there on the market. http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:System_Requirements

thanx for the help, I'll look into these cards. Sorry about posting in the wrong section, I'll try to remember next time. thanks again.

bah dont get nvidia
for 180 you can get a Diamond Radeon HD 3870
it gives way better performance than the 8800gt
if you dont believe me pics dont usualy lie
this is my 10,000 watermelon superdupe using this card

and heres me doing crysis on all High settings at 40 FPS

and if you wanna see the cards specs heres it on newegg.com
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814103050

i mean you get alot more for your money with ATI
8800gt= GDDR3

HD 3870=GDDR4
and double data rate memory speed is a HUGE factor in overall performance

First off SGTBOB, and anyone else who reads this, when shopping for a new video card, you need to know the right bus port inside your computer, whether you have it directly attached to the motherboard ( cant change it if it is )

Knowing the right port bus is easy, open up the tower and look at the peice of hardware your monitor plugs into. If it is a white slot, it is mostlikely PCI, which in turn would be a NVIDIA, or similar type of video card. If it is a brown slot, it is an AGP type bus port. Which would constitute the need for an ATI or similar type video card. I tell you this because if you buy the wrong type you cannot return it.

So with explaining that, SGTBOB, can you honestly say that you KNOW your ATI is better than the Nvidia 8800gt? Ill do the 10,000 melons on my Nvidia 7600gt. And ill see if it crashes.

thats a little overgeneralization both carriers sport cards for the three main different bus types so just because you have said bus type doesnt mean "buy from them"

PCI=most universal but slowest
AGP=not many support but is a bit faster than PCI
PCI Express=the most universaly accepted interface for modern Graphics cards
also its varient
PCI Express 2.0=similar to the difference between standard USB and USB 2.0 this bus is nearly double the bandwith of its predicessor PCI Express 1.0

The Graphics card i suggested does best on PCI express 2.0 but can also function on 1.0

this isnt true for Newegg.com and Frys electronics
Newegg gives you a 7 day period to return no matter the reason after that you may have to negotiate or get turned down
frys its dependant on the product but you still have a trial period
note that neither of these stores accept broken returns if youve overclocked and it fried it (they can still retrieve its registry)

from personnel experience, Yes

i had bought a HD 3870 and borrowed my freinds 8800GT (we did the test on my rig because i only had xp pro my freind had tons of programs on his)
and both where tested on crysis because it has the most compatibility and is the greatest strain on a computer

and heres the max and lowest FPS for both cards (done on all High settings)
8800gt HD 3870
highest 54 63
lowest 23 28
Average31 42

Note that the average was not calculated with the very highest and very lowest FPS (the outliers)

love to see it
just as a tip make sure to make a backup because if it crashes it can sometimes lose data and then you would have to reinstall the game
oh and plz post screenys (when i did my superdupe i just hit the "ultra high" settings button and took the resolution to 1680 x 1050 in case your wondering what settings i used when i did it)

Well good that you know your stuff SGTBOB, But anyway the kid still needs to know what type of bus port he uses or he could be sorely disappointed. And also if you have 2gb or less ram another 512 or higher ramstick wouldnt hurt if you got the room and what not.

As far as the melons. maybe tommorrow as i didnt realize i have to drop one at a time. ( which i commend your patience for that too young man.)

I would suggest using a free (trial) utility like Sisoft Sandra, that will run a complete system check and extract a report where you can find graphic slot information.

Or, if you have the original box (the carton, I mean) of your motherboard, it will be written well colored on the front !

well you dont have to do them one at a time (IE one melon two melon three . . .ect) what you do is press the `~ button to the left of your 1! key and type in the following

Player.additem 00017829 "10000"

then press enter this will spawn 10k arrows into your inventory
and i suppose because your guy probably cant hold all those arrows at once (they get heavy) type in

TGM

then in case you dont want to go look all over town for a melon just type in

player.additem 000336A0 "1"

(note that there are no o's in that code just zeros)this will add one melon to inventory
also be sure that you only drop one melon when you do the dupe or else youll have 5000 melons that are each worth two melons

and as for patience i have it but i didnt use it in this scenario i just started the dupe and left it sitting while i ate lunch (and i had fraps running to make sure i didnt miss anything)

tell me how it goes,

Yo BOB,

I might be old according to your standereds or what not, but i did the melon thing had 10,000 in my inventory, started dropping one at a time...............Do you get it ? HUH HUH HUH HUH?....................................i figured you wouldn't.

I will be glad, and proud to say my computer isnt the best in the world, and it probably wouldnt handle 10,000 melons, But cheese wheels? hmmmm..................

Like i said before, Anybody who changes there Video card themselves needs to be sure of there port where the video card goes............................Otherwise they could be out of some cash, if they didnt go to newegg, or whatever.

And. . . . . . . . I . . .am done.

True... but most motherboards if not all made recently have PCI e. I believe its been around since at least the geforce 5xxx series.

Where did you read that? confused.gif on the back of a cereal packet? . AGP 8x is faster than pci. Pci-e 16x is faster than AGP 8x. Motherboards made in the last 5 years are generally allmost all Pci-E 16x (or if its an sli board sometimes they do 16x on both or 8x on both). If your motherboard can use a core2 processor/whatever the latest amd chip is then it allmost certainly has at least one pci e port. Pci-e 2 isn't really needed and we aren't really seeing the benefits yet (note also that its backward compatible with Pci-e). AGP was obviously the standard for quite a while. BOTH nVidia and AMD (amd owns ati and has rebranded all their stuff amd) have moved on to pci-e a long time ago and are some recent cards are pci-e 2 (which is backwards compatible with pci-e btw).

If you tell me the name of your motherboard I'll do the googling for you.
A 3dmark 06 score or a use of crysis's inbuilt benchmarking utility would have been a lot better. Indeed. Isn't that card a little more expensive than the 8800gt anyway? From what I've heard the 8800gt is clearly the best value for money and the 9600gt coming in close behind.

BTW: The 9 series is basically the 8 series only a little faster... there aren't really any great improvements with it. Also note that the 8800gt is g92 so is basically a 9 series card in all ways but name (the only g92 card starting with an 8 btw).

The 8800gt can be had for about 220 dollars... and the 9600gt can be had for about 170. The 8800gt is about 25% faster so its better value for money (I've heard it overclocks better too). The 9600gt has 512mb of ram and the 8800gt has either 512mb or 1gb (the 1gb is slightly slower). I'd go for the 1gb 8800gt because its the best value for money and you won't run into any problems with high texture resolution mods (assuming you have a fast HDD and enough memory).
