If you didn't know there is an animal in real life called the gaur I think maybe thats where the developers might have gotten the name

no. they are not. they are a species much like the buffalo, or bison, and are either almost endangered or already are, and it's gAUr, not gUAr.(the real-life animal)

Do you REALLY think that's where they got the idea from?
Do you not think that's pretty unlikely seeing as I bet no-one here has heard of that animal before, and it's fairly likely no-one at Bethesda has either?
Do you not think it might just be a bit of a coincidence?
omg there iz this race of ppl called Britons! do u fink thats where bethedsa got the idea for bretons?????//// LOL

I believe the real question is:
Are real-world Gaur used as target practice?

Well it is possible that betashade got it from the animal"gaur"or the plant"guar"or the band "gwar"
I dont sat that they have but it is possible that one of the men in betashade comes from India or have just vaicationed allot there.

An interesting take on the name Bethesda I would say. But can we get back on topic please.

Apparently, if they're endangered, they were used as target practice.
Although I doubt that the guar and gaur would be related, seeing that one is a buffalo, and one is a weird faceless lizard sorta thing.

i highly doubt they were used as 'target practise' they prolly just got stupid (like in the game) and died off
then again i could be wrong
the amounts of Gaur is probably not high so they must be endangered for not many ppl have heard of them

A guar is also a kind if fish. Though I don't know if it is spelled the same way. So obviously BETHESDA took the bison type, the indian plant, the band, and the fish and fused them together in the Dev Cave and out came some retarded looking bipedal lizard/mammal that grones alot. Yes and they are also used for target practice. I will now go take my medicine

im pretty sure bethesda came up with the name themselves then probably later realized that it already exsisted so i say it is coincidence
