every time I do the quest where you free the ghost and get the map to his chest I never have gotten it to open because the log entry comes up telling this is the reward and I close the entry and the green slice goes away. I can't get close enough to the chest to open it before the log entry comes up and I can't get it open. I tried the console by clicking on the chest and typing "unlock" and hit return and it says "unlocked chest" but no contents are displayed. So can anyone help here....is there something I am missing?

The log entry should only tell you that you have found the right spot. The final quest stage reads:-
Grantham's map has led me to a treasure chest concealed among some rocks. This must be where Grantham hid his belongings while he was at sea. He has passed this on to me now, as a reward for helping free his spirit.
This completes the quest from the point of view of the Journal. The chest is on the bottom of the river and IIRC is not locked. The contents is not very exciting if you have a low level character but is only likely to be empty if either you have opened it already (but that may not be possible, I don't know) or you have a mod that interferes with chest contents.

thanks so much for the reply but I have found you have to come at the chest a certain way (east to west) and hit it just at the right time. At least now I know how to do it.
