Fantastic project, I am not worthy!

On topic : I've been reading some Tolkien lore, and some books about Middle Earth, illustrated by various artists, and I came by "the atlas of Middle-Earth" by Karen Wynn Fonstad, a cartographer with a master's degree and so on. She has done quite a bit of impressive work about Tolkien's world, and I was just wondering if this was among the lore taken into consideration in this project.

Now I am looking at a detailed map of Thranduil's Caverns, flip back a few pages there's a drawing of the The Prancing Pony, another flip forward show a detailed drawing of the Tower of Cirith Ungol. Other places described detailed includes :
the Spider's Rind ( with attercop, remember?)
Lothlorien
The White Tower (itself, not just Minas Tirith)
The Morannon
Lonely Mountain
Lake Town
Beorn's Wide Wooden Halls

and many more, MANY more.
Anyway I'm sure this thing will make me wet my pants, thanks to Daerk and his team!

As I understand it, the answer is no. The MEMod team are only taking canon, ie only the work written/drawn by Tolkien himself as references, so this may mean that they might mirror the work of others (such as Karen Wynn Fonstad), but they will not simply take these people's work and base their mod on that.

However, please note that I am not part of the MEMod team, so the above is only what I understand to be the case, and, as such, may be wrong.

Well, the layout of that particular book was canonically based IIRC. I have seen it too, and it has drawings, maps and battle layouts based on Tolkien's notes and discriptions of locations, lands and battles. Mind you, when you get down to it it really depends on the ARTIST and how the artist interprates those notes and descriptions, and then goes about the process of creating the pictures, drawings, etc. from what they envisioned.

The only way to achieve a truly canonical representation of the books and Tolkien's world is if we had Tolkien himself working along side the Devs, instructing them and giving them complete descriptions and drawings of all the lands, locations, etc. Obviously, this is impossible since Tolkien is no longer with us. The best the Devs can do is use as many books about Tolkien and his worlds as they can, and then fill in the blank areas with their own interpretations. Such is the case with many things that involve re-creating or portraying visualy the works of people long-gone.

The devs working on this are using only canon books, as said above, yet I'm sure they are looking at these books as well.

Also, Welcome to Forums, the first beta should be out soon!

Well, Ancalagon, you bring up the theory that Tolkien himself would need to help the MEmod devs for them to create a true canon to his work....

So, being a 15-year old police sketch artist, I took Daerk's photo, added some color, some wrinkes, removed and greyed the hair, gave him a pipe and.... JEBUS! The resemblance is uncanny!!!

Look at the final result!
