We all have our little way of getting rid of hiccups, but do any know the best way? Bob, please explain. ( I have recently afflicted Newt with hiccups, so he will try out each solution himself. )
There you have it.

Hmmmmmm..........
I always started chugging a large glass of water whenever I felt a hiccup coming on. WARNING!!!!!!!! Don't try this around anything electrical, you might end-up spitting all over it(happened to me before

).
P.S. As a side note, wouldn't this topic be more at home in the "Off topic" section of the forums???

Good point. I'll ask someone to have it moved.

The best way for me is to hold my breath for 12-15 seconds. It works like a charm.

Ditto. Although it is sometimes required to repeat the process one more time holding breath for a little longer. Heh, but don't hold it for too long.

Yeah, lungs full of air and holding breath. Try that few times in a row and it's guaranteed that you'll get rid of it.

Seems to work for me. Thanks.
( I'm starting to turn blue ) That's because you don't have hiccups Bob.

Newt... if it was Bob who had the hiccups, you could try doubling or even quadrupling the parenthesiseses...es. As it is, I think Bob gets far too much air.

Get a glass of water. Then find some pure magnesium (because I'm sure you have some of that laying around) Drop the magnesium in the glass of water.
The magnesium will react violently with the water, and the following chemical reaction will occur:
H2O + Mg = H2 + MgO
The magnesium will light up like a fallen star, and if he didn't take grade 9 chemistry, it'll scare the crap out of him, as well as the hiccups!
I guarantee it'll cure the hiccups. If you don't have any magnesium, try pure potassium, it works even better.......

I read that! I might try it on Bob though. Anyway, wouldn't cesium or fancium work better still?

And Chesto, your right, he does get to much air.

Ask him to hold a balloon full of hydrogen over his head and pop it with a burning splint. Also, be sure to film this process and post it on youtube or www.owned.com

Please stop posting suggestions that have the potential for causing injury. Just because someone wants to be our little lab rat doesn't mean that you should suggest things which are impractical or dangerous.

Drop the magnesium in the glass of water.
At room temperature, even magnesium ribbon won't do anything in water unless it's already on fire. The dust
can be explosive when wet, but a detonator is required.
QUOTE

No. Magnesium hydroxide is produced, not magnesium oxide.
QUOTE
try pure potassium
While you're at it, substitute the water for 3 M sulfuric acid. That would also make the magnesium reaction a bit more aggressive, if you could get it to start up in the first place.

Whoops....
I take ecology for one week and I forget almost everything I know about chemistry!
I was saying Magnesium, but I was thinking Sodium and Lithium!

I drink on the opposite side of a glass of water.
Did you know, and this is just a theory. The reason why we hiccup trased back to when our species had gills, and it's a gill reflex. When you watch a fish take in water; it's the same as a hiccup. This is what the Scientists think, but there not to sure.
