Article link: So...who has the setup with the most blinding lights?

Recently I went into Dixons to get myself an external 4-port USB hub for my PC and laptop. Upon installing the hub I noticed that it glows a ridiculously bright neon blue whenever it is plugged in. As it is powered by USB it means even when the PC is off, the light is still on. Apparently it's not enough that I'm going to be impotent from all the radiation emitted from monitors, now computer manufactures are focusing on burning my retina before I hit the vintage age of 22.

Now my PC rig is in the room I sleep in; I'm in a house with 3 other guys so I don't have an office to put my PC in. I probably wouldn't even put my PC in an office even if I had one. I like watching movies on my 24" monitor while in bed! The problem is that this USB hub makes it hard to get to sleep unless I turn my PC off at the wall (yes, more eco-friendly, save the world, blah blah blah).

Through further inspection I've noticed that I now have 6 peripherals for my PC that have these blinding neon-lights. Personally I blame the film "The Fast and the Furious", and the recent growth of "chav" cars that make use of the neon lights that emit a coloured glow underneath cars. It seems blinding PC users with blinding neon lights is the new in-thing.

My 24" monitor's "on" light is neon blue, my Logitech z5500 speaker control unit "on" light is neon blue, my Steelseries keyboard has neon lights for "num lock", "caps lock" and "scroll lock", my Medusa headset control unit has not one, not two, but three neon blue lights (or red, depending on settings), my Netgear wireless dongle not only has a neon blue LED but it flashes as well, and lastly is the aforementioned, newly aquired USB hub.

My Steelseries keyboard lights are so bright I've had to cover it up with my Game card, and even then it manages to shine through the thick plastic card. What possible use do these blinding lights serve?

So how many of you can top 6 PC peripherals that have blinding neon lights?

My LEDs consist of one red and one green on my power splitter, one green and one sometimes-blinking amber on my chassis, one green on my speaker, one green on my keyboard (function-lock), multiple blinking green on my DSL modem, and one sporadic green on my CD drive. None of these are particularly bright.

Then there's the Cherenkov wide-area irradiator on my DVD drive. Thing's capable of lighting my entire bedroom, though probably not enough to read by.

If it's an LED, a layer of duct tape over the light can do wonders. Enough light will pass through to let you know it's on when you're looking at it, but it won't cast a glow over the entire room. If you're concerned about looks, you can usually fit it between the inside of the case and the light, but this may require some disassembly. Transparent tape with a small precut section of paper may also work.

1 Apevia X-Jupiter PC tower
1 Aspire X-Cruiser PC tower
6 Disc Stakka storage units
2 Western Digital MyBook ext drives
2 sets Logitech speaker systems
2 Belkin UPS
2 D-Link 7-port USB hubs
1 NetGear network hub
1 Saitek PC gaming keyboard with command pad
1 Logitech G15 keyboard
1 HN7000 satellite internet modem

With the monitors turned off, the ambient light from the 5 billion (exaggerated count) LEDs is still bright enough that I can walk through here in the dark without my glasses and not step on anything.

Does this count?

Pic is kind of old... I have new stuff now with more blinky lights smile.gif

And DarkOne, if your 4-port neon-blue-glowing hub is made by Dynex, I have that one too.

I know what you mean DarkOne, I bought a new Dell XPS710 at the end of last year and When I turn it on it looks like a freakin' UFO has landed in my Bedroom.

I dont have many lights myself - apart from the power lights on the pc and monitor, there are a couple of LEDs on my modem, and a few diagnostic lights which only light up when the PC is booting. But my PC is a couple of years old, and was fairly low-budget even then, so thats not really surprising.

I don't have any blinding lights but my desklamp gets as hot as a stove and it hurts to turn it off. I never turn my laptop off so when I go to sleep it sometimes makes annoying clicking sounds.
