In 10 years of playing Morrowind and Oblivion I have played
as a male less than 10 times.I just love the ladies in this
game so I play mostly as female.I play as a male mostly in
the other RPG,War and simulation games.

I must confess, I generally play female characters, generally because cute girls hacking through Cyrodill are kinda cool. That said, I have no male characters, and so none are the same gender. However, some of my most successful characters have been males, and they've accomplished quite a lot more than most of my others.

...I normally play female characters for one simple reason: if I have to stare at someones backside for two or three (or five) hours at a time then if possible I want that backside to be attractive...

I usually play female characters in Oblivion because of the great nudity mods. But I choose the character over the gender so if it is more appropriate I will play a male. If it makes no difference I play female for the eyecandy.
Side note I use my own custom race stats and gender does not affect starting stats. I hail from oldschool D&D. Although it may have been AD&D that didn't differentiate. Been a while lol.

I chose mixed. I tend to play females, but, as koreanbear pointed out:
QUOTE

If the particular character I'm roleplaying would make more sense to be male, I pick male. However, I usually don't have specified characters in mind, so I play female.

I've always had one male and one female character running simultaneously and enjoy switching between the two.
I can use more of the best armor/clothing mods that way. I've always played the male as more stealth minded for some reason, Don't think it's gender biased though, I think I'm just into the games, movies and TV shows that have made girl heroes more kick-ass.
My question is though, how many of the male players had female characters before the nude body replacers came out, hmmm?

I always play as a female, though i am a male.I always choose females because they are more petite and make a smaller target to hit.I play child races therefor nudity is forbidden as i am not a pervert so i don't use females because of the nudity mods.

The gender depends on the mood I'm in but generally I play a female when I don't want to use a companion mod And a male - (my real gender) when I have a companion which most often is female.
I to have used a female using the stock non-nude bodies.

I'm a female and have two female characters. I tried Two Worlds and couldn't get into that game mainly because of the incapability to create a female character. I don't think I'd mind trying a male character in Oblivion though, because there is flexibility to do whatever one wants with their characters and there's so much role play involved (as opposed to just fighting fighting fighting.)

For some reason I couldn't edit my comment

I just wanted to add (after reading the below posts about companions) is I like my gal characters, but I like my male companions. It's just a nice fit for me.

I'm female in real life, but I nearly always play males in any game, so long as they don't look too "Duke-Nukem-wannabe".
I find the "steroid-popper" look that many male video game characters have to be rather distasteful to say the least...
Thankfully Oblivion is fully customizable
Pretty-boy mods FTW.

Characters? one is time consuming enough....besides who want to close those damn gates again....
it's just annoying always up to the freakin main tower...which is why up till now i've closed about 4 and had no reason to bother with it again until i downloaded the midas magic mod which actually gives you a reason.

When in college, before graphic intense computer games, while playing a D&D type game, my character was, over time, turned in to a female. Since then, given the choice, I play a female in games. Hey, it's role playing. I know I'll never be a female elf in this life.
Some games gives the females perks they don't give males.
Though all AIs looks at others, in Oblivion, it gives me a chuckle when my female character walks past a male, and he turns his head, watching me (yeah, you better look. I'm not wearing this outfit just for my health)....so much like us guys do in real life....

I'm a guy and I've had both male and female char. in oblivion though most have been female. One reason for that is there are just so many more clothing mods for female than men. In most games I tend to make as many characters as it takes to explore all the options. In KOTOR and KOTOR 2 I have 2 good Jedi, one male the other female and 2 bad Jedi, Male/Female. In Mass Effect I have 6 characters (due to all the classes - soldier, biotic, tech, and then the ones that mix a little of one or the other...,) (most are male though since the romantic subquests are the same regardless of class). I tend to make my females evil characters most of the time though. Maybe subconsciously I think of women as wicked creatures. Ask me to make a virtuous Paladin of absolute integrity and I will make him male, just the way I am...

No, that's just how you were raised. People are raised on stories like King Arthur with noble [male] knights fighting against the evil [female] sorceress. Seeing as how the Knights of the Round Table are, for all intents and purposes, D&D paladin archetypes, you tend to want to make your paladins male. It's not you; its the racist Medieval period that concocted that story,

Most of the time I have characters who are female, same as me, but now and then I will make a male one just for a switch... Rarely play them for long though. I just prefer being 'me'.

Some of my friends asked me why I always play as
Leeya. That is... because I perceive beauty and elegance from females.
Did someone say role-playing? Aye, indeed it is roleplaying ^^
As a side note, do you know that it is more than a simple roleplaying?
It is a reflection of our inner true self.
We can't deny our own
Anima. Have a nice read, hope it helps about understanding the repetitive question of:
"Why do you play as other gender in RPG games?"
It is good to show our inner self

I play females in Oblivion (I am male myself) Because I find it intriuging to play the opposit sex, but in games like D&D I do it as well, where you have bigger chance of getting different responces so it force me to think like my character.
And by doing so in more and more years, I have really got a much more understanding of women in real life, then without the experience.
Sadly, in oblivion you get the same responce as if your character where male in dialog etc.
That is something I would love to see.
But as for the quistion why I play women?
I do so because I am a gentleman and wants a understand of women.

I'm a guy and I have about 2 characters of each gender. They are all different races and classes
I find it more interesting to play various types of characters. That way I can really get everything out of the game that it has to offer.

This is the first time I've EVER had any female character. When I first played Oblivion the day it came out, I wanted to y'know, rain down destruction upon my bitter enemies and whoop ass on anyone fool enough to sneeze in my general direction = male ftw
but since I started playing again (thx to the excellent mods found here) I made a female dunmer and it's not all that different, just more clothing lol
I never make a female for an mmo cos who needs real people mistaking you for a woman? *UNCOMFORTABLE*

I've tried a male character once in Daggerfall, but I could identify with my female character better; in our world, women are valued for their weakness and a lot of fun is reserved for the males who look down on you if you try to become a fighter or a scienist... in the game, there seem to be no gender based prejudice, and I like it a lot. Fighting monsters is easier than fighting society.

Gender doesn't matter as long as you enjoy playing the character and can relate to/identify with the "story" behind their creation, and their relevancy in the game world. My primary character is a female Dunmer Battlemage. The second one is also a female--a Redguard Healer turned Warrior and Divine Crusader. Sometimes I play as the Redguard Healer's father who is both a Warrior and an aspiring Arena Champion. I'm currently working on a male Khajiit who has close political/social ties to my Dunmer Battlemage, and will either be a Mage or Shadow Ranger.

I'm male, and play male characters only. I also have more male companions in my party than female companions.
Seeing a small female butt all the time gets tiring after a while, and I can't see all those half-naked Exnem-Armors and all that anymore. I hear from alot of younger players that they enjoy that though
That I don't, has probably something to do with my loong, good and steady relationsship, I just don't want to see other boobs all the time, I only want those of my partner

I typically play as a Tabaxi or Ainmhi female, simply because catgirls are win, and there's typically no benefit to playing as either gender for those races anyway.
@Pitch_Dark: I take if you've never played the Metroid series?
