The Elder Scrolls Construction Set Wiki has a good list of tutorials, as well as just about everything else a prospective modder needs to know. Two of the most popular "basic" ones are A Beginner's Guide and the Bethesda-made My First Dungeon, of which I prefer the former, but they both come in handy. The Construction Set itself can be downloaded here.

To have any chance of making a mod as a nub first think of something simple you want, you have to have a direction, then you will pick things up peripherally as you go along. Quicker and more fun than trying to absort it all in one go.

Broadly speaking your mod will require a combination of

1) creating objects and actors in the world
2) creating meshes/world design/textures etc
3) all forms of conditional operations i.e. scripting

People will behave as if number 2 is the most important (because most of them are suckers vainly trying to get jobs in the industry for 25k a year lol), but number 3 is where the power is. Number 2 just makes the trailers look good, for absorbing gameplay you need good..erm.. gameplay.

I'm a programmer by profession and I've been modding for 2 days and have done things so called modders said was not possible (I don't like being told what I can't do). There's some sort of "image" or "street cred" to being a modder. It mostly entails sagely pointing out why a good idea can't happen, there's people like that in all walks of life, the solution? Kill them, no just kidding but don't let it or them put you off, most of them are pretty dense and don't even complete projects (too much weed? hmm??).

If the tutorial gets boring, log into Oblivion and sit there and think what you'd like... maybe try adding a new property to an alchemy ingredient... something simple to start you off then refer to the tutorial when necessary. GL & HF (and read this before the mods remove it hehe)
