What game would you say is the scariest game you've ever played?

I would have to say Fatal Frame. That game is hard to play. Even my brother, the horror lover he is, couldn't play it for very long.

I would have to say Fatal Frame.

I totally have to ditto that! I cannot make it through. I pick it up every now and then, but end up putting back down again after about 30 minutes at most. I have yet to finish it...Then there's Fatal Frame 2 and Fatal Frame 3, and Fatal Frame 4 is in the works. I don't think I'll ever finish this series...

I also will say Resident Evil and Silent Hill. I can make it through those just fine, but there are areas that make me jump, like the infamous hallway in Resident Evil, or the infamous Hospital in Silent Hill.
Sniperwhere
Resident Evil never really scared me. Did un-nerve me at times but not trully scared. I love the game though. I did like the part in RE 4 where you play as Ashley and have to go into the pitch black basement to get a keystone.

Silent Hill on the other hand is pretty frightening. It's dark environment and high lack of light really makes for a good time. I can never seem to finish the game as I always get stuck somewhere.

But Fatal Frame had my heart pounding and all. Every time the ghosts came I always jumped. Because they jump into view as a flash and can only be seen through the camera. Not to mention the screams they make everytime they flash into view. I gotta get that game again. Don't know what happened to my copy.

I can't think of many other games right at the moment.

What about The Hallway? The one is Resident Evil 1 where the dog jumps out a window at you, then in Resident Evil 2 there's the same hallway with boarded up windows with the zombie hand that reaches out, and in Code Veronica there's the same hallway with no windows that the giant tentacle shoots out of the wall at you? No one who has played Resident Evil can say that hallway didn't scare the crap out of them.

I meant the game in general. Those did make me jump, yes. In Resident Evil 4, though, the one thing that trully frightens me is when the Regenerators show up. (I actually forgot about The Hallway. What's wrong with me?)

Ah, yes, the Regenerators. Whenever one of those guys appeared, my heart rate instantly sky rocketed. They got especially bad once you started running into the ones with the leech things on the back. Those are almost impossible to kill. One time, however, I got really lucky and managed to, somehow, shoot the back leech while facing the front. It sure made the battle a lot easier! thumbsup.gif

I think those are called Iron Maidens. I may be wrong. I was relived to hear that there are only about 5 Regenerators and even less Maidens in the game. They're hard as heck to kill. (You need thermal goggles and a rifle to kill them.)

Sort of, Iron Maidens are a form of Regenerators, but the location and number of the parasites is determined by the difficulty level of the game, and the location. Link

Sorta changing directions here, I've been playing Silent Hill 2 more often. That game is scary when you're not prepared. The "breathing" hallway near the start of the game made me un-easy. And when you first get the flashlight, you turn it on and that thing with legs for the upper body, also known as a Mannequin, scared the heck out of me as it jumped up. I know what I'll be playing more of. thumbsup.gif

I also like how the radio emits an errie static when the monsters are nearbye. And why are we the only ones in this thread?

I think the scariest... well maybe not scary more creepy, definatly had me looking over my should a fair bit and jumping at the slightest noises was Eternal Darkness. This is a game that actually played the player lol.

As well as a health bar your characters had a sanity bar, as this went down things started to happen... don't want to spoil it , but well worth looking out for, could probably find it cheap around, I think it is only on the Gamecube though. Works on Wii too...
Jonlissla
The hotel in Bloodlines. Scared the poo outta me the first time.

But the game that made me poo bricks was the mod "They Hunger" to Half-Life. Never been the same afterwards.... ninja.gif
The_Terminator
Yeah, Eternal Darkness was great! At first I didn't enjoy it much, but then, when my sanity dropped really low, it became one of the best horror games I've ever played. I agree, it's well worth a try if you can get hold of it smile.gif

Ditto.
What made it really great was it's huge influences by Lovecraft. wink.gif Almost every aspect is from Lovecraft's works.
I still remember that one scene; I don't think anyone who's played it will ever forget it.
SPOILER!
That one scene where it pretends to erase the memory card. That had to be the scariest part.
The_Terminator
I remember that bit! Unfortunately it had been mentioned in a review I'd read beforehand, which kinda ruined it...

Hm... Another one, I haven't played though, is Clocktower. My brother played it but didn't like it. Wonder why.

Edit: Wow. I realized just how irrelevent this post was.
Povuholo
I haven't played many horror games but Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth was a nice game. It was completely HUD-less too. Health can be seen on the inventory screen and can you can hear your heart beating when your health is low, and sanity had to be guessed by listening to the sounds the character made or how bad the vision was blurring. No ammo bar either.

Very immersive. Great game.

I saw the walkthrough on Youtube (yeah, a WALKTHROUGH video), and even though I wasn't playing, it did had some pretty creepy moments, like that house in the beginning. ninja.gif

I remember that house...That was quite scary.

The only thing I hated about that game was when you ran into save spots right before giant unskipable cut scenes right before areas where you were undoubtedly going to die several times.

I have no fear, so I don't scare easily, no matter how scary someone might say a game is.

Play Fatal Frame. If you can get through that game without moments of trully being scared, then you can say that. That game can make your heart stop. Play it. I dare you. whistling.gif

Fatal Frame? Isn't that another name for Project Zero? I played a demo of that once... tbh, I didn't think it was anything special.

Maybe it was because it was just a demo but still!

Too bad they release any good horror games on consol instead of PC. All we got is..... um... Silent Hill? Sure, it's supposed to be damn scary, but when I tested Silent Hill 4, I was dissapointed instead.*

It was only a demo... on a small TV, with daylight streaming through the window, and the sound of my sisters stereo echoing through the house. So it's no wonder I wasn't scared smile.gif

I haven't played F.E.A.R. personally, but my friends say it is scary. Bioshock had a few good moments, though. The way some of the Big Daddies appeared was startling, if not truly scary.

I don't know about Bioshock. It's a really fun game but nothing in it struck me as horror related(I still love the game to death). F.E.A.R. is meant to be scary and does a good job at it. Though my Vista ruins the moments with it's stupid problems, so I play it on the XP.

Yeah. F.E.A.R. is probably the only game that scared me in the day time...

but I bet you I can top that. Ready for it? The scariest game I have ever played would probably have to be...

SILENT HILL!!! ninja.gif

Or "Clock Tower"... ohmy.gif

I haven't really played a lot of scary games, only DOOm 3. I never finished it....

Don't play obscure 2, the scary parts are funny.

RE: not really scary, as has been said it's more shock-scares, like Friday the 13th, where you know somethings gonna happen so it's more the suspense building up that scares you.

Silent Hill: also not particularly "scary" I would catagorize it as "hellishly freaky", the game tries to show you a little weirdness, and then go, "oh yeah? you think that was weird? check out THIS!!" It's just a lot of stuff that you can't even believe that you're seeing. Then it goes further, and further, until you really think you'll lose your mind.

Fatal Frame: this is where fear comes into play. You don't get guns, you don't even get a stick ala Silent Hill, no, you get stuck in a creepy old, truly dark, house with nothing but an enchanted camera to fend off pissed ghosts. It's funny that if you try to tell someone about this horrifically scary game you played, where you're a girl in a house who takes pictures of ghosts, they will probably laugh in your face. But, this game seriously, blows at least the other two away in sheer terror.

If they do laugh in your face, let them borrow the game, tell them to play it late at night.... then hide in their closet, and as they are walking around in the dark, jump out and grab 'em! See if they laugh about it then! OK seriously don't do that.

Silent Hill series were the main scary games for me, but the Scartches the F.E.A.R. and The Lost Crown: a ghosthunting adventure games were realy good too. thumbsup.gif

Man, I see you guys all talking about these F*cking scary games and I go "Damn, I really play these games." But I cant just myself to play these games. The only horror game I played and finished was Doom 3 and it really didnt scare me that much (only when an Imp or Zombie is RIGHT next to me). I actually just laugh as i blew those fudges to bits. That reply about Cthulhu really made me interested in it and Lovecraft. I saw the some youtube videos, it only makes me hate myself only more about me being such a chicken.
Necromancer G
I play many scary games. Once I was playing eternal darkess and the game blacked out. I found out it was progammed into the game. But seriously many of these games dont bother me. This is only because the malaria pills the army gives you to prevent it, one of the more extreme side effects are night terrors. You eventually begin to forget about fear and more about what if.

On some levels I do totally agree here. I really got sucked into horror games a while back. The best ones are the ones where you feel the most powerless. Honestly while I really do enjoy Resident Evil, I don't consider it much of a horror game. When you play Resident Evil for the very, very first time without knowing what's going on does have an eerie feel. However once you learn about genetic experiments in order to create biological weapons. It becomes less horror more sci-fi. Silent Hill on the other hand is pure horror, I remember playing the playstation version for the first time and loving it. The reason I loved it, is because I had absolutely no idea what was going on. It was based in the supernatural, where as Resident Evil focuses more on science. With the supernatural you never know what to expect. I remember getting a little freaked after my first I guess, "cross over" in the school when first playing Silent Hill. I loved the sequels, though okay 4 was iffy. But the second game had such an amazing, yet disturbing story it did unsettle me just a tad.

Fatal Frame is really spooky in that all you get is a camera! No weapons! The best way to freak someone out playing a horror game is to take power away from them. Fatal frame did a good job with this, and it did have an eerie feel. Personally I like Silent Hill above all because the story just kind of hooked me, and unsettled me at the same time. There's also a bunch of older games on the PC that names elude me. There was Clock Tower, which was great! With the Scissor-Man. All you could really do was hide, and hope he didn't find you, that was brilliant. I wish I could remember the names of other titles, but I've always loved horror games if they're done right. Just like how I love horror movies, and novels if they're done right.

Hack and slash, aka slashers are a genre of their own, and rarely creepy. But horror is the stuff that kind of unsettles you for a while, not so much leaving cheap one second scares, but more so a lingering unsettling feel. The kicker is this can be done with minimal gore if the author/director is clever.
Blacksnake89
Scariest game I ever played is a toss up between Condemned: Criminal Origins or believe it or not Oblivion. Not vanilla Oblivion my friend completed a mod called Shadows of the Necropolis and it's really freaky.
Halororor
I just bought project zero 2 for the PS2. Anybody know if it's any good. I haven't started playing yet as during day you can't see ANYTHING on the screen, it's just too dark.
Palpenious
I was going to mention Clock Tower, but figured I should keep it relatively short. Clock Tower was a creepy game which didn't give you any weapons either, the second gave you a gun, but I never got too far in that. System Shock was supposedly one of the scariest, but I never got to play it. Echo Night was another really scary PS2 game, very reminiscent of Fatal Frame.

I think a good horror game is F.E.A.R just the amount of jumps you get from it are great! ^^ Great fun to play in the alone in the dark you get so pulled into it.

Alone in the dark is another good one. Just when your climbing a cabble and it snaps sending you halfway down a building, or climbing up a winch as a helicpter dangles on loose metal is always a heart pounding experiance! At lest in my case anyway ^^

Resident evil 4 and the remake for GC are good ones to (but sometimes the scares arn't great i have to admit that) But definatly having a zombie burst through the door and grab you when you least expect it (RE: Remake) or the door you just blocked being toren down by a chainsaw weilding nut that just seems to eat bullets like nothing on earth (Re4) can really make you panic. I remember when a zombie burst through the door when i was Chris in the remake, he missed me but gave me a hell of a scare! @.@

Haunting ground is another good one, being when the main character goes into panic mode and wont stop running and being in a place full of psychos and having to hide from them (Word to the wise, DONT hide in the iron maiden...you could probably guess why)
XxSilverHeartxX
Oooo! Resident evil rocks! Resident Evil 4 is the best in my opinion, it's so....different! (And Leon is awesome!! xD ) I used to be so scared of it though! Maybe cause the first time I played it I was 9... LOL! Especially the Regenerators, man those things are creepy!
jojo man
I've never played the Resident Evil games, so I can't really give an opinion about them. But F.E.A.R. was really creepy. Doom3 was as well, but it never moved past the "Monsters jumping out of the shadows" approach.
Deus Ultima
i guess the scariest games i ever played would be bioshock, eternal darkness, and F.E.A.R F.E.A.R and bioshock are probably the scariest though, i dont know i don't get scared easily, oh that reminds me! my favorite bioshock video woot.gif

Got to agree with you there Regenerators are scary! My bros terrified by the things....but try taking on the things with the first rifle you get and its a whole different story. I hate when you get to the prison and one of them jumps you, their breathing is so freaky! @.@ I think U3 (IT) is another thing thats scary in RE4, and the worse part is you get timed when you hit all the switches!! Man that parts scary sometimes! ^^

I love Bioshock to death, though I don't find it scary at all. Maybe it's just me. F.E.A.R. Persius Mandate is actually, IMO, scarier than the normal one.

Regenerators make me so uneasy. My friend and I are contemplating getting a ringtone on our phones with the sound the Regenerators make and playing it in quiet areas, say, school.

In Persius Mandate, I'd say the scariest part is when you go underground with Lietenant Chen and those cloaked "things" with glowing red eyes attack you.

Oh man, I gotta agree with you there. Perseus Mandate is, believe it or not, scarier than the original F.E.A.R. Just playing the demo creeped me out... Especially the part at the end, when you fall into that hole... *Shivers*

Also, I would have to say that Condemned 2 is pretty scary, but it's mostly suspenseful (sp?).

Condemmed is pretty scary at times, escpecialy when you know and can hear someone moving around, then bang! You get a iron pipe in the face when you turn a corner...but my 360 blow up when i had Condemmed in it and i took both back. But i have to say the game was quite good ^^ I'm just unsure about buying either of them incase my 360 goes bye bye again (Happened on my birthday too T.T)

Everyone will probably laugh at this, but. When i first play Resident evil: Code Veronica (When i was about 9 or 10, i can't remeber)...you know the part where you come out of the bunker and into the graveyard...well you know when the cutscene plays when all those zombies pull themselves from their graves and Claire's scared and screaming...well...i sort of...freaked out completely and shut the console off in pure horror and fright and was scared wittless...(nervous laugh)
Sniperwhere
^Nah, that's not laughable(well, not to me) cause at 9, you couldn't pay me to play horror games. I used to watch my brother play Silent Hill 2 and I would sit there freaking out the whole time. Heh.

I envy my friend. He played and beat all three Fatal Frame games.
XanAlderon
I don't touch horror games, I get scared by oblivion at times biggrin.gif

I just recently got "Penumbra." Now that's creepy. It's a survival, puzzle, horror, action game. And you don't fight. But god it gets creepy.
