Kotaku have now joined the media frenzy posting their own preview of Spore. There are some interesting tidbits of information in there, including mention of something rather intriguing:

They also said that they are talking about whether to do an open beta, something that would allow them to stress test what are a whole bunch of new concepts in short order.

So we may get the game a little earlier than expected if they go ahead with this; provided our connections can handle the download. I trust they'll buy up a warehouse full of servers for the occasion!

Nah, they'll probably just let IGN and some of the other gaming sites handle the download problems. Once it gets out to torrents, personal p2p and ftp, and bootlegs are flooding the streets, the strain on the servers probably won't be too bad.

No, the bad part comes later when people realise they need to register their beta with EA, watch a few dozen promos for various EA products, and have Will Wrights likeness tattooed on their body in order to get it to work. Oh, then there's all the issues with Vista.
