Does anyone know this game? I still play it some times, since it still works on my PC

This was my first RTS game, and I've spend hours playing it... The good old days... Simple, yet always a challenge. I still remember the first village I build... It is a shame you couldn't get more inhabitants than 200...

So, has anyone else played this game? The full title is: Populous III: the new beginning, if I'm not mistaking that is.

Wasn't Populous the prequel to Black and White? If I remember correctly, you played as god, right?

Only in the last level During the rest of the game, you are a shaman who tries to become a god by conquering world after world.

it is possible it is the prequel to B&W, but I don't know for shure.

It wasn't a proper prequel to B&W but it was probably listed as another "god game" to compare it to when B&W was near release. It wasn't by Lionhead Studios but the now non-existant Bullfrog if I recall correctly.

I thought the title was just Populous: The New Beginning, no III or what have you. It was... well it wasn't my first RTS, but it was the first where I got an experience of building a village and stuff, which I think was one of the main things I enjoyed about it! That, and using cheat codes to destroy the opposing villages with volcanoes and tornadoes. I couldn't really beat them legit back then, found it too hard. Come to think of it it was pretty advanced for its time... first game I'd seen with real-time permanent terrain deformation (reducing land to smouldering craters with meteor storms was uber fun). Definitely a great game at the time. I think I've still got it around here somewhere.

I think my first RTS was actually Kings and Castles II, or it was some name like that. You could build castles and stuff and take over regions of a country... it was pretty old when I played it and that was like 10 years ago now. Had to even use DOS to boot it up... and then I went and lost the disk. :/

Yes, I was doubting as well. It was only the demo I played wich had the 'III' in its title. The game itself hadn't, but I thought they just forgot to place it on the box...

And indeed: it was very advanced. I allways used decay to let all paths the enemy could use to attack my village sink Then I'd build myself an army, used 'landbridge' and attacked

DOS? yes that must have been very old Just like the first game I ever played: Jill in/of the Jungle... I lost that floppy too...

Oooh.. I loved that game!
I could never get past the level where your shaman is trapped by a enemy shaman... But I was a youngin, and my gaming skill was lacking.
Saddly, my Populous disk no longer works, and I cannot retry the level I speak of.

I always loved the (Sim) feel of the game, I would play without fighting for ages, then when it got boring I would attack my enemy with a massive force I gained by spending much more time on each level then nessercary.

The game designer of Bullfrog was Peter Molyneux, and he moved to Lionhead studios in 1997.

You mean that he was involved with Dungeon Keeper as well?

Ah yes... good old times... Can't remember how I got past that level anymore, but I can remember it. I'm going to search that CDR tomorrow and play the game again.

I loved that game. Sadly I never finished it without cheating. Every time I got stuck I'd just release a dozen Angels of Death and watch the carnage.

I loved that old PLaystation Game.. maybe it was for other things too (LIke the PC) but I had to get it for the PS before I had a good PC.

I loved the word "Ka-ka!" when you fired your infinite fireball spell. Made me think of the bad word though I know there is no relation

but speaknig of this game, how about the original Populous by bullfrog? I had it for SNES and I must say I never fully beat that game. It got very repetitive but still challenging.

This brings back old memories
when i was at the god lvl i always put a volcano in the sea then i raised a bridge and moved my whole villaged there,built watchtower around it so when they sent there vulking dragons i could shoot'em down mouhahaahahh

I always thought that the 'mana' was actually a malevolent entity, giving the shamen visions of the glaxy - other worlds and tribes and making them think that every other tribe would 'destroy' them.

either that or by some random chance, every shaman was an extreem xenophobe.
