Recently I went back to Morrowind to play as a dark elf, everything was fine until I decided to join the mage's guild, for old times sake. I headed over to Balmora and asked to join... WHA?
Apparently my dark elf was not skilled enough to be accepted. I thought this may be due to his skills (well duh,) so I started again with another race, couldn't be stuffed training. Just to test this I created another character, an imperial with the same stats at start, and headed over to Balmora for another try, and whaddya know, I was accepted.
What I want to know is why is this? Is there some programming that means dark elves can't join the mage's guild, or is it some ignorance on my part.
Thanks in advance for any responses.

You must've had different stats. Are you sure that all magic skills, AND your Intelligence and Willpower were identical?
The requirements aren't even that high I think, if you're not using a mod. UESP says 30 willpower and 30 intelligence.

I found out why, I'm using Wakim's Game Improvements, which lead to this happening, all I need to do is turn one of the options off. Thanks for jogging my memory.

I've never once had a problem joining any guild or faction in the entire game (at least out of the joinable ones), and I am always Dark Elf. Keep in mind that when you choose different races, your stats are different depending on which race you choose. There isnt anything in the game that changes other people's opinions about you because of your race, besides any preset dialogue.
