OK this seems reasonable, though it will almost certainly veer off -topic after about 3 posts! tongue.gif

I voted for Queen, for one very simple reason: they are (were) the greatest band ever to have existed. That does not mean that they are my favourite - they are not - but quite simply that no band has ever excelled so much at so much. Their overall quality, quantity and variety; musical, lyrical and vocal talent; their ability to reach out and touch people of all nations, ages, cultures and tastes; their live performances and the astronomical crowds that they pulled in.... the list of merits is almost endless. Still brings a tear to my eye when I think that is all gone. Fair play to Paul Rodgers for giving May, Taylor and Deacon a chance to carry on doing their stuff - and putting on a decent show himself, without presuming to "replace" Freddie - but Freddie was unique and utterly irreplaceable. OK, so the most popular were the Beatles, the longest-running the Stones, and my absolute favourite is Floyd, but Queen get the KarK award for Best Band Ever.

Second up would be Kiss, again for overall contribution to the world of music. Still love the Crazy Nights album! biggrin.gif

Thirdly, Scorpions for a few timeless classics that rank among the finest in the world, and for longevity in the business. The guy's nearly 60, and still going strong!!!

Fifth, Tenacious D, who I can't say I'm too keen on but I haven't listened to the whole album yet that my brother gave me. Even if I like them, they'll still be 5th on this list XD

Last (and least) Bad Religion, who I've never listened to but I don't do Punk tongue.gif
thejake1453
hey thanks for posting on this topic karkarinus your the only one who has biggrin.gif sad.gif angry.gif
your right about queen, (bohemian rhapsody i think is their best song) and every thing else
except for bad religion its more rock then punk, get a cd of their greatest hits or something cos a few of their songs really mean something when you listen to the liryics.

tho i'm annoyed that i forgot to put jimi hendrix in the poll blush.gif
ninja_lord666
Personally, I don't listen to much music. However, I prefer classical: Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, etc.
thejake1453
no prob ninjalord666, infact i like those exact classicle artists you listed, i even said so in the currently listening too topic in the lounge, tho i didnt know how to spell Tchaikovsky, and i only got it right then because i cut and pasted it.

oh and it sucks you had to get rid of your signature, man that thing was funny.

??? I like funk and metal, two different type of music. Funk being 70-80's Rick James, Carl Carlton, Ohio Players, James Brown and so on. Metal being Iced Eearth, Sonata Artica, HIM, Slayer, Kreator and so on ^-^

For me it would be Queen...
It's hard to find someone that totaly deslikes Queen (at least from the people i know...).
The_Terminator
Definitely Queen, one of my favourite bands. And yes, thejake, Bohemian Rhapsody is by far their best song. After that it would probably be Tenacious D- Tribute was excellent.
Carah
If I were to listen to any of them, it would be Bad Religion. I use to listen to them a lot when I snowboarded.
bluekatt

good old fashione dlover boy
the whole the works album and most of the game and innuendo
i tend to avoid kind of magic and the miracle like the plauge
macmert
Bad Religion... Not that I love and adore Queen but Bad Religion's attitude is really interesting biggrin.gif too bad that the band is no more, and Greg Graffin is an interesting fellow, he has a PhD in sociology...

I also like Tenacious D too, JB's vocals are amazing and KG is a graduate of Juliard (misspelling?? biggrin.gif) school of art, a true artist...

I love their Pick of Destiny soundtrack...

I love Bohemian Rhapsody by queen...

I love my computer from Bad Religion biggrin.gif really great lyrics biggrin.gif

But my personal favorites are Megadeth, Stratovarius, Sonata Arctica, Manowar, Savatage, Rhapsody of Fire, Iron Maiden, Blind Guardian, MD45, Almora (Great Turkish Band), Pentagram, Pantera, Slayer, Circle II Circle, Dio... and many more....
freddycashmercury
Take a look at my username and guess which one I picked. Queen pwns all.

And yes, I am aware I misspelled "Freddy Mercury". It was intentional.

metal machine music is a class in its own though
im not sure if you ever listend to nirvana but take the feedback of radio friendly unit shifter and listen to that for an hour and you have an idea what metal machine music sounds like
evilkoal
out of these, i would have to say tenacious d.
but i listen to all forms of music (country isnt music btw imho)
i dont much appreciate the 80's style of music though.

I voted Queen. Incidentally, there's a petition to posthumously knight Freddie, so if you're in the UK or the British Empire (or whatever its called now), sign it or I'll mutilate your primary sexual organs.

Without doubt, I vote for Scorpions.
My fav songs from them: Rock you like a hurricane, Still loving you and Priscilla.

humanbean234
I voted for "None," but that's my personal taste.

Queen was good (Tie Your Mother Down and Hammer to Fall are my two faves by them, but I got so sick of hearing Bohemian Rhapsody after "Wayne's World" was released)... I was more-into prog-rock, psychedelia, and folk-rock.

Rush, King Crimson, Yes, Nektar, Moody Blues, Soundgarden, UFO, Todd Rundgren, Bob Dylan, Richard Thompson, and the list goes on and on.
Michlo
Queen, of course.

The music. Their staying power is impressive. They've helped tons of other artists.

Finally, they gave us the song which is consistently voted best song ever.......

Cheers.

Edit - Thanks for the petition link, I hadn't heard about that. Going to sign it now.

Anyway, gotta go with the Scorpions, for me.

One of my all time colossal favorites:

Still Loving You

Time, it needs time
To win back your love again.
I will be there, I will be there.

Love, only love
Can bring back your love someday.
I will be there, I will be there.

Fight, babe, I'll fight
To win back your love again.
I will be there, I will be there.

Love, only love
Can break down the walls someday.
I will be there, I will be there.

If we'd go again
All the way from the start,
I would try to change
The things that killed our love.

Your pride has build a wall, so strong
That I can't get through.
Is there really no chance
To start once again?
I'm loving you.

Try, baby try
To trust in my love again.
I will be there, I will be there.

Love, your love
Just shouldn't be thrown away.
I will be there, I will be there.

If we'd go again
All the way from the start,
I would try to change

Yes I've hurt your pride, and I know
What you've been through.
You should give me a chance
This can't be the end.

I'm still loving you.
I'm still loving you,
I need your love.
I'm still loving you.
Still loving you, baby...

Tenacious D's the most recent, they got my vote

Lol, I used to listen to only bands from the 60's-80's. I just frankly think that none of those bands are very good.

Bad Religion - A decent punk band. Not bad, not too great though.

Kiss - Oh god..

Scorpions - They have a few good songs. The lyrics for the most part are pretty lame though ("There's no one like you, I can't wait fr the nights with you, I imagine the thing we do, I just want to be loved by you"). I think AC/DC already wrote that. Like 100000 times

Queen - Sooo overated. I never understood what was so great about them.

Tenacious D - Are they even a serious band? I hope not.

I do think that there are some really talented classic rock bands (Rush, The Who, Pink Floyd, etc), but most classic rock bands (Especially the ones listed here, except for BR, which isn't classic rock) have been overplayed to death.

Obviously this is all my opinion.

they have a large dedicated fan base. even to this day, there are people who would kill to see them play live again, including myself. i would say respect that, but i really expect nothing more from a 17 year old with only negative things to say about others' choice in music.

write ONE song with HALF the humor they did
btw, their song The Metal made it on one of the most popular video games of its time, criticize that..

You strike me more as a closet Ryan Cabrera fan, than a Hendrix fan

what about " la oreja de Van Goth?", her songs such as "Paris" ,"Me muero por conocerte" are very nice.

Having a large fan base doesn't mean you have skill. If that were so, Miley Cyrus, The Jonas Brothers, and Britney Spears would be some of the most skilled musicians in our lifetime.

Uh...He asked what we thought about them, did he not? He also put this in a debates forum. I wasn't critisizing his taste in music, I was just telling him what I thought about the bands that he listed. If he wanted only positive opinions, what's the point?

As a joke band, yes they are good. But I couldn't ever take them seriously, which is why I said "I hope not".

I'm not talking a fan base of a bunch of grade-schoolers..
I highly doubt you have more musical talent than Queen, if you disagree you really don't understand or know much about the band then.. or much about playing a live performance, you just have to walk in someone else's shoes to be able to to seriously criticize their work by stating they're over rated

So somehow having a fanbase of older people suddenly changes it?

Talent means nothing. It is all about hard work. I never said that I was more skilled than they are, I'm not arrogant. That doesn't mean I can't criticize them, though.

I really don't see why you have a hard time understanding why I think queen is overrated. Their most popular songs (We Will Rock You, Another One Bites the Dust, Fat Bottom Girls, We Are The Champions, etc) for the most part are devoid of much musical skill or interesting lyrics. I personally have difficulty respecting a band if they don't show either of those two traits.

I have a really hard time believing that you know anything about this band, that's all. The only thing I cannot understand is criticizing all of these musicians while neglecting to really say anything good about any music, just saying I'd rather not comment if I were only going to ney-say every band and fail to acknowledge ANY of their hard work that has led to them still being listened to and talked about to this day, it's immature, disrespectful and unnecessary.

Yet having musical skill does not equal being a good songwriter. You can be one of the most skilled musicians alive, and still not be great at writing songs. I think Paul Gilbert is a good example of that. He is one of the most skilled guitarists ever, but I don't think he uses that well in most of his songs. At the same time, there are people who can barely play chords that are able to write incredible songs.

What do I need to know about the band besides their music? The songs I listed are virtually all of their popular songs (I didn't list Bohemian Rhapsody or Under Pressure, because I think that those are actually interesting), and I don't think that those songs deserve to be popular. It doesn't matter how much work they put into it. Those songs that I listed focus almost completely on just catchy choruses. There isn't anything wrong with that, It's just I dont think that they deserve the credit they get because of that.

Let's take another song, Stairway to Heaven, for example. This song is also played in excess to some degree, however I think that Led Zeppelin deserves all the credit they got for writing it. The lyrics are interesting and thoughprovoking, The music is played well and backs up the vocal nicely, and the way that tension is built up and then climaxed at the end of the song is quite incredible.

I don't even like Led Zeppelin much, but I am able to respect what they did because of the facts I listed.

QUOTE

It's not a contest, however it has become a fad. I mean, even Elder-Beermans is selling AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, and Pink Floyd shirts. I went into Meijer once and looked at the music dvd section, and "AC/DC" had it's own section before the section "A". It has become "cool" to like classic rock bands, although I think that a lot of the peope that fall under that category only know two or three songs.

You can be one of the most skilled musicians alive, and still not be great at writing songs.

With iTunes and free-source downloads it's become increasingly harder to get anywhere financially with your music and if that's what you're wanting to do, you have to play out. That means every chance you get, sometimes that means every night until you don't really even wanna stand anymore and it helps to ease some of the dependancy when you have a lead singer/song writer, but those two things would be the only reason I would say I never got into those bands in OP's poll. I have no idea why The Rolling Stones wouldn't be on there and he should have known "None" would get voted for w/out any excuse.. Either way I look at it, from a performing standpoint or listening to a band/individual's music, lyrics and singing are half of it at best, I didn't come for story-time and I honestly never really liked long guitar solos (unless it was my own biggrin.gif) and there isn't a band I've been into lately that the lead singer does instrumentals to all of their songs, besides Coheed so I don't always expect one person to always have the stamina to write, play and sing

See Micho's last post here. Those musicians are how many years older than you? Not all of their song ideas are relevant or original today, but you're going to have an awfully hard time in life if you fail to realize the importance of hard work. Most bands in the poll have worked 1000 times harder at getting their music off the ground than you or I have and I remember playing gigs when i was 15, so ..

Timi,

you ought to take the whole package, not "just their music" as you say.

Queen had a stage presence / energy few get to match. Freddie was a born performer. They also did some risque (for the time) / fun / interesting videos. On top of all that we had music that whilst you don't agree, was loved by a great many people and USED by a great many people for their films, ads, etc.

To call a band "overrated" really is a slap in the face to all of their fans. You are basically calling the fans wrong. It would have been less offensive to just say it isn't for you. Going as far as saying overrated is insulting.

Any of that make sense, young whippersnapper? If not, remember this too: Kids should be seen and not heard! hehehe .

Ah, 17. That was the age my second life (of independence) began.

Cheers.
HouseAtlantic
Do you see the severity of this? Michlo didn't even notice I called him Micho!
Really, though like it or not people take insults to their music personally, because we take our music as sentiment. If someone said to me, "Coheed and Cambria are a horrible band the lead singer sounds like a girl." I wouldn't even give a reaction (even if in fact I should, I have met Claudio a dozen times he is engaged to an old firend of mine's sister) but if the choice of words were "These fans like stupid music," or something along those lines I could easily see myself getting confrontational and very serious without much thought about it. I hope we have reached a mutual understanding. Most of all I would be concerned about the negativity you came off with, Tim, at 17 the attitude and traits you've carried thus far are set in stone at that age, in certain ways and grow harder to change (I know..lol, right..) but I'm saying it's a bad time to be thinking negative right off the bat about things, especial toward people who shared the same interest as you long before you were even born.

Yeah, that's why I said it was overrated, because I feel that it gets too much attention for what it offers. It's great when bands are able to put on amazing shows, but that doesn't change the quality of the material that they're playing.

QUOTE

Well, everything in music is subjective. When someone makes a statement about music ("That band is good" or "That song sucks") it is generally known that that person is sharing his opinion, and not stating a fact. It is tedious to say "In my opinion, ....." each time I make a statement.

QUOTE

Thanks for the advice, but I'm generally a positive person. I just come off differently online i suppose.
