Article link: How To Upload Your Mod to TESNexus.com 1.3

NOTE: Anywhere you see a forward slash in a directory path, read it as a backslash because editing this article causes backslashes to double and is a pain to re-edit.

This tutorial will walk you through how to upload your mod to TESNexus.com.

Prep-Work

1. Create your mod and make sure the name is consistent throughout.
Example:
Name of the Mod: MyMod
Name of the Files:
Data/MyMod.7z (compressed archive of all the files in your mod)
Data/MyMod.esp (no version number)
Data/MyMod Readme.txt
Data/Meshes/Armor/MyMod/Mcuirass.nif
Data/Textures/Armor/MyMod/Mcuirass.dds
Data/Textures/Menus/Icons/Armor/MyMod/cuirass.dds
2. Make sure it conforms to Modding Etiquete.
3. If the mod includes .NIF files, make sure the texture paths are not hard-coded.
4. If your mod is visual or contains items, create screen shots and convert to .JPG format.
5. Create a readme file (Readme Generator)

Upload the Mod

1. Create an account and login. http://www.tesnexus.com/modules/login/index.php
2. Click MEMBERS at to top-right of the site if not already in your User Area.
3. Click Add a new file and fill in the following information and click Submit
- File Name: MyMod (the name of your mod)
- Category: Pick the right one for the right game: Oblivion or Morrowind (you can always change later if you goofed).
- Short Description: Type a one or two sentences that best describe your mod (keep this as short as possible)
- Long Description: Paste the entire contents of your readme here. You should not be adding anything to this upload that is not already contained in your readme.
- Version: 1.0
- Author: you (or the actual author if your re-uploading for somebody else)
- Editing Access: Enter the member ID (number) of the person you want to have access to edit your mod entry.
- Allow Comments? Yes allows a comment log, No prevents its creation. This option is only available when you first upload your mod.
- All Tags? Yes allows your mod to have additional content tags associated with it to aid in advanced searches.
- Allow user uploaded images? Self explanitory.
- Hide from public viewing? Yes means that nobody can see your mod page. Helpful when first uploading your mod to avoid silly questions about content if you are not finished uploading.
- Adult-Only Content? Select Yes if your mod, your description or your screenshots contain adult-only material.
- I agree to the Terms and Conditions? Self explanitory.
4. After you click Submit, you are taken to another page where you can actually upload your mod. Set the following and click Submit:
- File name: MyMod 1_0 (the name of your mod and the version)
- File: Click Browse and pick the archive of your file (example: MyMod.7z)
- If this is your only file (or the most current version), place a Checkmark beside Make Primary.
- Small Description: I would recommend adding one of the following prefixes to your description, especially if you have multiple files: REQUIRED, OPTIONAL, OBSOLETE, TUTORIAL, VIDEO, PATCH, etc.
5. Visit your mod page and set the initial tags since you are more familiar with the mod than anyone else. Example: Oblivion, Laguage - English, New Models, New Textures, Armor - Male, Armor - Shields, NPC Vendors

Attach Screenshots
1. Once the mod is uploaded, click Manage Your Files in MEMBERS area if you are not already there.
2. Find the mod you just uploaded in your mod list and click the button called IMAGES that is on the same line as the mod you want to modify.
3. For Image #1, click Browse and find your 1st screenshot (should be the best one).
4. Type a short description of the image.
5. Repeat the above two steps for images 2 thru 5.
6. Click Submit.
7. Repeat the above steps until you have uploaded all your images. The site tends to order the last images uploaded at the top. You can change which is your primary image displayed on the main page at any point by clicking the "Make Primary" link under the image thumbnail.

Would you suggest filling in the corresponding fields in the Summary tab of File Properties?

Hey thanks, I didnt knew such a tutorial existed. Will be usefull when my mod is ready wink.gif.

Pinning it would be a good idea.
Dark0ne
You've actually written some quite helpful tutorials. I might see about getting it put permanently on the file database page somewhere.

Thanks oh Master DarkOne. I am your humble servant...but I'm not entirely sure that this tutorial is ready for primetime. I don't have a solid solution ready for readme files. I believe a one-size-fits-all readme template is impossible/impractical and thus, I'm trying to create a readme generator that will tailor a readme that is appropriate to what the modder is actually uploading. See http://lhammonds.game-host.org/obmm/tools.asp for the Readme Generator.

EDIT: Readme Generator is done.

I have to say that this Readme Generator looks very good! That's one WIP that really should be finished, it would be very useful to many.

And I hope the reason that I'm not getting any comments on my quest tutorial is because it's clear enough? Can't imagine since the first version has been up there for a month and had mistakes in it. Those are fixed though. And I added screenshots wink.gif

Finally, the code for the Readme Generator is complete. I am now working on refining the content.

I completed the Readme Generator a couple hours after that post. Go ahead and check it out.

OK, tutorial just updated to version 1.2 which includes the recent changes to the upload process here at TESSource.net.

Good tutorial, as always lhammonds smile.gif. This should help a bunch of people.

Your read-me generator wasn't complete, and I've been using it for my mods? I thought it was finished happy.gif , didn't encounter any problems, and it was perfect for not-so-organised people like me. What does the rewroted code add?
LHammonds
Tiberiu911,, if you're referring to a recent edit in one of my earlier postings, it was mainly to change the IP address to the Domain Name version. The Readme Generator has been complete for a long time. I've been toying with the idea recently about adding output options such as the plain text you see now, HTML Color-coded themes that can be placed in the TESSource.net descriptions, BBCode and Wiki code.
Oblivion_Dwarf
OMG Thank you so Much! happy.gif Kudos

I want to bump this topic to request that most of the migrated tutorial topics, ESPECIALLY THIS ONE, should be updated with new links and sources?

Now the GamingSource has moved to the Nexus, most new members that have modding experience may have no clue on how to upload them at this time.
LHammonds
I'd like to update this tutorial but the process is not yet finished and I'd be wasting my time making and re-making this tutorial. I'd rather wait until Dark0ne says that the design of the upload process if final.

I've been sharing a few ideas on how to change the workflow of the upload process to make it easier and more intuitive so that tutorials like this are not needed very much.
