You need a program that can extract .7z files. Can't remember which one it is or if WinRAR can do it. It may be WinACE. Either way this is not a bug report so I'm moving this thread.

Stick to winrar, mainly because is can unzip the majority of compressed files.

Well i had the same problem ph34r.gif . If the files have the notepad icon, then you need an application to use them. I personally use 7-Zip for my RARfiles. Hope this helps biggrin.gif

What is stopping GamingSource from restricting uploadable archive files to only RAR and ZIP?
Marxist ßastard
7-ZIP yields a much smaller archive.

Besides, modders don't quite get the point when it comes to filetype restrictions --- if 7-ZIP were forbidden, then they would just upload their mods as a 7-ZIP file enclosed within a ZIP or RAR file, like they do with OMOD files.

I need some help. My 7-Zip v.4.4.2 (the latest available) won't extract any of Growlf's zip files. Weird. I get a message that it is not a supported archive.

[b]FAQ: How to handle files containing the ending zip, rar, 7zip, ace and such

For the reason I frequently find the question how to handle compressed files such as rar, zip, 7zip, ace or others, while I think those are the common, I made up my mind to finally write down a short tutorial for newbes, which an admin might pin up here, so nobody needs to ask all the time.

First you should know that the files you downloaded endling with rar, 7zip, ace, zip [...] are compressed originals of the file you were trying to get.
To get them to work, you have to decompress them, by using a little program like WinRar or 7-zip.
You can download them here:

WinRAR:
http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm
There are versions in serveral languages, which I appreciate the most, just pick yours and download it.

7-zip:
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/7zip.html

Once you downloaded one of those programs, follow the installation instructions given by the auto-installer.
If done, you usually just need to click onto the modfile you downloaded before, and your decompressing program will start automattically, giving you the option to place the files into whatever directory you want.
To place your mod data right, you have to follow the instructions of the contained readme, as neither WinRAR nor 7-zip is responsible for your mods not to work because of wrong placement of its files! smile.gif

ZipGenius 6 works pretty well, I also have the all in one basement7z which the process went without a hitch.
The Free version of winrar is not a 30 day trial one is it?

Er, quite what the point of this post is I don't know. That's one of the things that this thread advises you to do, yes. Please don't post pointless one liners, as it's against the rules. Thanks.

Unfortunatly I too am having problems with .7z files. Which i don't understand because I have both WinRAR, and 7-Zip, both updated to current. I had to find an off-site place to get rens hair by itself, because i can't extract the full install. Thinking about resetting my file associations for WinRAR and removing all other Compression Archivers (7-zip, winzip, powerarchiver, etc.) And yes WinRAR is free, but you can keep WinZIP for pretty much ever anyway, i had it for 1.5 years 500+ days according to program, with no problems. Then I discovered WinRAR, which is very much more versitile in my opinion. LOL look at this I'm here rambling on about a pretty much pointless topic. Gonna go now before I get myself in trouble.

I like 7-zip. It works nicely, and I have never encountered any problems with it. That may change in the future.

Personally, I prefer IZArc It supports 7-ZIP, A, ACE, ARC, ARJ, B64, BH, BIN, BZ2, BZA, C2D, CAB, CDI, CPIO, DEB, ENC, GCA, GZ, GZA, HA, IMG, ISO, JAR, LHA, LIB, LZH, MDF, MBF, MIM, NRG, PAK, PDI, PK3, RAR, RPM, TAR, TAZ, TBZ, TGZ, TZ, UUE, WAR, XXE, YZ1, Z, ZIP, and ZOO. Which is quite a lot. And, best of all, its free! smile.gif

Have a look here.

EDIT: I have just discovered that it can open CD image files like ISO, BIN, CDI and NRG. It is also possible to convert such files from one type to another (BIN to ISO, NRG to ISO).

it seems that the program mentioned above by the terminator is able to do that. I have not tried it myself, however

I feel needs to be said.

I have several friends who have told me I should check out the "Kumiko Manor" mod for Oblivion. Just a few minutes ago, I started to download it - and hit a snag. The download is a .7zip file.

This has consistently been a problem for me. Not just for mods, but any type of file transfer. I have never been able to unpack a .7zip file. Supposedly my WinRAR file program will unpack them, but every time I've tried, it looks at me like I've just intruduced it to a self-destruct virus. I also have WinZip, but it won't unpack either .RAR or .7zip files.

So, for all you modders who think .7zip files are the greatest thing since sliced bread, please keep in mind that if you don't make a .RAR or .zip file also available - you are keeping part of your audience from being able to access your genius. And I'm not being sarcastic, either. I fully believe some modders (most?) are geniuses - I've tried to write a few mods, and it is not easy. My hat is off to all of you who write mods. I'd just like to express my appreciation in the highest form of all - using your products!

But, I can't do that if you are going to insist on packing them with .7zip. Now, I do understand that .7zip generates the smallest files, making your uploads easier and faster. But, is the speed of your upload so valuable that it justifies cutting yourself off from potential fans?

Thank you for letting me rant, and hopefully give you something to think about.

004 means it is a file that is split into 4 parts. hence 004

Although i could be wrong, i dont remeber that well...

im not sure... you somehow need to piece together the other 3 files. Is it a video file?

On second though, just do some google searches. That will help you more than i can.

UPDATE: Yes, it works. I love the new manor. It was worth every gold piece I spent on it. I think the only thing I need Verona House for now is - Verona House has a better system for transfer of alchemy ingredients to storage.

THANKS to everyone for the help.

There should be either a .exe or an archive of some type, as well as the .002 and .003 (and maybe a .001 too-not sure though). They'll probably be in separate downloads- otherwise there'd be no point in splitting it up- and you just need to put them all in the same folder and open the first one (the exe or archive), and it should put them all together as one, if it's an archive. Otherwise it'll just install/self extract.

Get the winrar program, get the free trail version last forever

I have winRAR. All the files I'm getting are .7z's. bla, bla, bla. But when I run winRAR on the files, nothing happens. Either that, or I get this Error message: "[filename.7z] The archive is either in unknown format or damaged". I already tried re-downloading the files. Same deal. What should I do?

When it's all said and done, I prefer 7-zip over everything else. It has the best compression, it's free, the source code is freely available and you can decompress all archives and create 7z or zip archives.

If you want the best compression to save space, download and upload time, use the .7z format.
If you want the best speed during compression and best portability, use the .zip format. (good for small files so that even WinXP can open them)
The .rar format is simply a middle-of-the-road format.

Oh, and one more thing, WinZip and WinRAR are NOT free. To all of you that are using WinZip and WinRAR past their trial periods, you are just kicking mud in the author's face for providing non-crippleware as a try-before-you-buy. Shame on you.

The thing about 7Zip which actually works best of all other archivers in my opinion, is that to open the 7Zip archive you need to resist the urge to double click, and instead RightClick on the 7z file, and from the Context Menu, choose 7zip. Then choose "OPEN ARCHIVE" rather than any of the other options.

The archive will open, you can select all or any of the files and then either use the extract button on the menu bar or right click on the files selected and choose "copy to".

What I like about 7zip is that it more reliably copies or extracts the files exactly where I indicate than winrar or winzip, both of which I have used for many years before finding 7zip and seeing the light.

You can find pretty much find all archive compressor programs for free off the net

im sure winzip open 7z files, but a 7z archiver prog is found on download.com for free anyways

if you have tried to re download the file when it shows as up as unknown or when unzipping it shows an error, try to contact the author of the mod or try to find a mirror download of the mod (mirror means alternative websites)

if it shows up as an OMOD, you need to search for the OMOD program, this file type is easier to install as it self installs all its files in the needed location, normally bigger mods have this alternative download option for those with the program

if it shows up as any other file, try puting it the file type that is shown (example; .zip, .exe etc), in google and it should find a program
