Wow, you reminded me of the 15 minutes of blissful pleasure I had playing that before Stronghold 2 came out .

I don't think there's anything quite like Stronghold, but if you're looking for less thinking and more killing ,by all means go for Age of Empires. If you're looking for something more detailed and economical, go for one of the Roman themed city sims.

lol, I still play the original every now and then - Stronghold 2 made some improvements, but sadly it also broke said improvements, so they ended up mainly just being annoyances.

Stronghold is still one of my all-time favourite games, even now - love it.

i loved it but the disk broke and we couldn't find another one so i was never able to beat it.
