Use TCL and the console to follow him if you're on a PC.
Go back to your last save on Xbox?

Open console, type "RA", hit enter. RA = Reset Actors, which resets all NPCs to their starting location.
Or if you bought an xbox, you're just screwed.

Enter the console and type player->additem nerevarblade_01 "1" if you want the unenchanted version, and type player->additem nerevarblade_01_flame "1" if you want the enchanted version.
