Nine is my all time favourite
Switch
May 11 2006, 02:31 PM
What, is this thread to say which is our favourite? I'll just assume it is.

Personally 9 is my fave as well. I just seem to like the gameplay, story, and characters more than the predecessors. The general atmosphere and locations are good too. And just to be clear yes I have played FF7 (to the end) and 8 (near the end); I just don't agree with the popular opinion that they're sooo much better than every game since. ^^;

I've never played nine but I have heard about how good it is. I guess I'm one of the norm because I like VII the most (Especially seeing as Vincent is my avatar...). However, I still like like FF IV in the sense of good old 2D RPG gaming. The characters are also somewhat memorable and it has a good story to it.

Well, having played FF mystic quest - FF9, i would have to say FF9 is my favorite as well, with FF6 a close second. A lot of people say FF7 was the best in the series, but i say they can... well, use your imagination. FF7 had a decent storyline, but it just didn't do it for me. However i do like the gunblades that were incorperated into FF8. FF6 was my first, and the storyline is so compelling, and the gameplay for it's time magnificient. FF9 tho is well, in a class of it's own. I was in memoria, then my brother opted that he needed to use my mem card, and deleted my file

I liked Final Fantasy 7 the most because i loved all the characters. Cloud, Aerith, Sephiroth, Vincent. And since it had the saddest part in any game i've ever seen (when Sephiroth kills Aerith (so sorry if you never played the game before!))
However, i liked the 9th but couldn't get into the 8th or 10th. So I think that my favourite has to be Final Fantasy VII!

The only one I've even started was FF7, on my calculator. I moved a few squares, and monsters came and killed me.
(I think it was seven)
By the way, you could have made a poll...It may still be possible to add one by editing your original post.
FF7!!!! bcause it is the only one I've played. I watched Advent Children, I love the church battle the best.

I've played no. 8 and it was okay. I didn't really get into it though. I actually preferred no. 2 or even no. 10. The gameplay was more interesting and I hated the faux-realtime fighting system of no. 8.

Only 9 replies!!?? I would have thought a Final Fantasy thread would have been more popular than this.
A lot of people I know think FF9 is inferior to 7 & 8. But I highly disagree. It had some pretty decent characters, and I found the skill learning system to be a lot more satisfying than materia or GF's. The best aspect of 9 imo, was the music. I found final fantasy 9's soundtrack more compelling and breathtaking than any of Nobuo Uematsu's previous works. Melodies of Life is one of my all time favorite songs.
Is it a bit weird that I have the sountracks to every final fantasy game? Nobuo Uematsu is my favorite artist bar none.

I have to agree with you on the music front, there. Some of the tracks I found pretty moving (not as in sobbing into Kleenex, but moving

). And the towns in that game have to be some of the most atmospheric I've ever experienced, even though they were just pre-rendered static pictures with collision. Now
that's the power of a good soundtrack.

Thank you! I couldn't for the life of me remember the name of that place, which is why I didn't mention it.

Lindblum has to be my fave, as well. Followed second by that twee village with the secret mage doll facility under it (I've played through this game like 3 or 4 times, you'd think I could remember the names of things by now...)

The little village is Dali. Why do you like it though? I despise the place personally. The kids are snotty and rude, and most of the people aren't very nice. I'd love to summon Atomos and wipe it off the map.
Does anyone remember Burmecia, the City of Eternal Rain. I found it highly depressing and loathed going there. Such emotions evoked by a tune and some rain.
On the flipside, I loved Treno. It has a wonderful atmosphere, and a catchy theme tune.

I liked Dali because of its tune, the layout of the village and such. It's true the residents weren't the nicest people, though.

As for Burmecia, yeah, that was a pretty atmospheric place. ^^ I don't know if it ever really affected me much though.
Bah, forgot about Treno (too long since I last played through this game). That's probably a notch or two above Dali. The Black Mage Village is a pretty spiffy place as well.

The black mage village was indeed a brilliant place. Especially with that super synthesis shop. Also, I like the black mages in general. Their naive, childlike attitude to life was an interesting touch. The place becomes even more interesting when the genomes are added later on.

Just out of sheer curiosity, precisely what makes you guys like the film so much? ^^; Personally, I thought it was an absolute load of tripe, and an insult to the series. The storyline made no sense, it was a disjointed hash of dialogue, dialogue that was mainly used to stick the overly long fight scenes together. I just sat there humouring it for the whole hour and a half, concentrating on it, and at the end was just left thinking... "what the hell?". And yes I have played FF7. It still made no sense to me whatsoever...
This is all in my opinion of course, and I don't want to start a flamewar.

Can't deny the CG was beautiful, and the fight scenes fairly impressive. But still... storyline? Hello? Spirits Within did better than this film in that respect.

Well as I said I havent played any of the FF games before, so I have no clue whatsoever about the storyline. Must be why I didnt detect anything on that point, im ussually VERY picky on storyline. But since I was ignorant I enjoyed the fights and the good animation.
First time I watched it I had trouble figuring out who was the good guy and who was the bad guy. Reminds me of the first time I watched Yu-gi-oh years ago. Blewhg.
After a brief research though, I found out. Oh, I should also add I only seen the last 45 minutes of the movie (was at friends house).
I like Sephiroth

. Nice bad guy after Darth Vader, Revan (from KOTOR) and semi-bad guy Sesshomaru (from Inuyasha).

Hold up. You've never played any Final Fantasy games, and Sephiroth is your avatar?
Get Final Fantasy 7, 8, 9 and 10, and play them. You'll like them. They're turnbased RPG's Like KOTOR, only with older graphics. 7 is especially ugly at first, but I recently went back to it, and you stop noticing rhe graphics after the first hour or so, and just enjoy the game.
Anyway. Advent Children was a pretty but completely irrelevant film.It bore no relation to the story at all, and every character except cloud seemed to be there, just for the sake of being there. They had no involvement in the story, which itself was disjointed and confusing.
That cool sword, and the return of Sephiroth, were the only reasons to see it.

I do have a question about that. Are those games availlable on pc? Or are they Play Station only titles? Im asking this because I've only seen those on Play Station 1&2 boxes, and I dont own a PS2. However I do count on getting one just for the RPG's.

Indeed. If you liked Advent Children, then you'll love FF7. It's based around those characters, only there's actually a decent story involved.

The others are definitely worth getting too (mainly FF9). FF10 is the only one you really need a PS2 for. And of course the upcoming FF12.

FF8 i guess. Almost finished FF1, played about halfway through FF3..they were alright. The intro movie for FF3 was cool imo. I've played FF10 and 10/2 both were crap. I loathe Tidus. The only good characters in 10 were Auron and Rikku. In 10/2 it Rikku and Payne (sp?). Haven't played any of the other but the friend that introduced to the FF series said that FF7 was crap.
I FF8 is the worse game in general I have ever played in my entire life. The game has good graphic and that was it. The character development, interaction, and story in it is hideous. I actaully like Cloud for all his moody problems, but this Squall guy is obnoxious. His dialog is nausiating, to read it is as painful as me stabbing myself. Every characters waas dumb and one dimensional. The happy chick got ADD, and that jumpy guy got ADD too. That chick was a spoiled, whinny brat. The only decent character is Quitis and she almost never talked. Back to squall, he's all moody emo and deny everything. Having to read his thought was horrible, I just wish he shut up. This game is about love, but the interaction was so unrealistic and bad. I know its just a game, but its really bad. I dont even know how two of them fall in love, it doesnt make sense they don't even get along and then all the sudden jump on each other. Horrifying dialogs.
Now the story is stupid, there is a world with nothing, but 3 'gardens' of kids that are supposed to be mercenary and they go on to save the world.
Also I find the battle long as hell. The monster were boring and unoriginal. Having to draw magic, that was stupid.
Also Nobuo Uematsu is someone I really look up to, but this music score on this one was really bad. There was probably 8 good songs in all. The one with the drums they play before a mission was so annoying I have to turn off the sound everytime it plays.
Worse game ever.
---
FF9 redeems itself a bit, that wasn't too bad. I think that Square don't make any good games anymore once it merge with Enix, which doesnt make sense, because they are two good company. I am really glad that Sakaguchi left the company and made Mistwalker.

Dec 3 2006, 08:37 AM
Well, I'll give you that Quistis was one of the better characters (everybody loves a hot teacher), and that the two of them falling in love didn't make sense.
The story certainly didn't pull together, but i have endured worse..like FF10. I can't what forum it was on but some sorry SOB said that he actually cried at the ending, can you believe that?!
Drawing magic was a bit stupid, but the junction system itself wasn't bad. A lot better than FF10s damnable sphere grid.
I didn't pay much attention to the music, maybe that's why.
As i said i haven't really played many FF games, but greed probably got the better of Square and now they're just pumping out lame, mindless sequels with pretty graphics. And until the lemmings of the world finally realize the series has turned to crap they'll keep doing it.
Though i have seen a few commercials for the new FF game and it was a little interesting. No intention of buying it though considering the bad jokes that 10 and 10/2 were.
That's all i have to say atm. Just remember, opinions are like assholes and so am i.

In my opinion, Final Fantasy VII is my favorite; lot's of good stuff, and a story line to make your head spin. VIII wasn't that good to me; weird magic system, weird characters, weird storyline...then again, I only got to the train part before say, "ok, I'm done." IX Was a damn good game, hands down; like IX, it has plot twists up the wazoo. X was so-so; I kinda wanted to punch Tidus before the end of it all. XI- the online one- is a decent game; it takes some getting used to. XII, unlike the earlier opinion about pretty graphics and a stupid game, it's a freaking solid game. And no awkward Wakka comic relief moments, either. Solid game, solid storyline, solid graphics (Except for Vaan's abs; WTF!?!), and is a damn good addition to the Final Fantasy family. FFIII seems pretty fun, but I haven't played it yet. The first is good if you have a good imagination (which, if you are used to the 2-D low graphic games, is easily come by ^^), FFII is an improvement over FFI since it has actual characters. IV is a good game, too.
Still, VII is the best, and I'm praying for a remake on the PS3. Just imagine; Final Fantasy VII in High Definition...damn...
Oh, and by the way, first post ^^.

As far as JRPGs go, they're mostly top of the line games. I've played all but FFIII, including those on other systems (FFLegend on Gameboy, FFAdventure, Tactics, etc.) Of all, I can't help but love the classic VI more than any of the other titles. FFX does get major points for great presentation and a heavily involved plot. The theme of sacrifice was presented superbly. X-2 kind of ruined it though, but X still stands out on its own.
