Nintendo has finally gave use a revolution with the name change to there new console, but it seems the fans are less than happy with new name 'Nintendo Wii' (we). Heard of one nintendo slogan

Eat, Sleep and Wii

Not bad? smile.gif

Hold on, let me get this straight... Nintendo have changed the name of the Revolution to Nintendo Wii? Is this a joke or are you being serious? tongue.gif

EDIT: Oh... oh no. You are. http://revolution.nintendo.com/

Are Nintendo purposely shooting themselves in the face with this console, or is it just me? biggrin.gif Oh dear. Did they even bother checking what it sounds like to English speakers? Yes, the entire world will remember the name, America and the U.K. especially, which make up a large part of the market. ^^; It is just a name, I know, but still, it's pretty... lame.

This combined with the positively unappetising controller system and no show of any really decent titles (mostly kiddish ones again to my knowledge) just makes me all the more think that this console could kill Nintendo. But maybe there are still enough fans to make them reasonable competition for Sony and Microsoft.
ex128
yeah, first a funny controller [which could be a good thing].. now this funky name? er... yeah... revolution was cool... Wii?

sometimes i wonder if they arent just doing this to see how far they can push fanboys before they break and go to the opposition hey?

Well with a funny name comes a funny line, here are what the Steam Powered forums believe in the nintendo wii.

I guess with that name, everybody is hoping that Nintendo is just taking the, erm, you know ... wii?

I have no idea how anyone might think that a console with that name could be marketed decently, and with the other not-so-really publicity they've received so far, I daresay their new console is doomed to failure.

LOL. laugh.gif I have always been a Big N fan, since NES, but they really are trying my patience. They killed the N64 with too many namby-pamby kids games, and then the GC hardly ever got off the ground for the same reason. NOW they're just going to throw away several billion Yen and not even bother making games for it!

Regarding the new name, well I think they want it to sound like it's as much fun as sliding down a slide in a kids' play park: "Wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii.............." or it's initials for "Wierd, isn't it?" or the marketing manager had a brainwave, "What if I....?" or "Whatever is it?"

Lordy knows I hope I'm wrong, and they may yet surprise us all, but my money's not on it! sad.gif

what is this wii you speak of? all i know of is the revolution! no wii..... never!

.chaos, this is pretty old, and that post wasn't exactly adding much new to the conversation. Thread necromancy is a bit annoying, especially with a post such as that. Just a heads up to keep you off the radar of our friendly neighbourhood mods biggrin.gif

I did hear the other day that Nintendo are going to change the name again after everyone cried with laughter at the Wii and the even better Wii wand. Any ideas if this is true anyone?

but wii wand? ah i cheked it an attachment that makes the wiimote into a wizards wand

According to this, it was just the usual rumour-mongering attention seeking. Which is a shame, because I still really dislike that silly name. ^^; I haven't got used to it, and I still think it's ridiculous. Ah well, I'm not going to buy one anyway.

im still standing by, the Wii is a glorified gamecube, reselling an old product with a new skin and new perhiperal. The fact that they are releasing the new zelda on Wii and gamecube on the same day supports this. They could of simply released the wand and a network adapter for the gamecube and more than likely all the Wii games would play the same. Im stick of the Wii and all the hype its getting its nowt special, innovation, pah, i have a mouse that lets me interact with objects on screen the only difference being i dont have to look like an idiot jumping around (because of this i have stopped using my eyetoy blush.gif ).

Having tried it at Makuhari Messe can say its nothing like a glorified Game Cube...if you dont want one you dont have to buy one .But dont make claims of knowledge based on ignorance.Try it then make your all knowledgable criticisms.

im not being ignorant to it, its just my opinion. i just dont get all the hype, nothing has really made me go wow. I was a bit tired the other night when i posted. What i was trying to say was, it seems there is alot of excitement surrounding the new zelda and from what ive seen the only differnce between the two versions is that the Wii has this little fairy thing flying about and you can go fishing (just like that dreamcast game, bass fishing or something). The majority of us haven't been as fortuante as yourself to have been able to play with a Wii but i'd bet 99% of consumers haven't played with one either, so in the mean time all we have are opinions based on what nintendo lets us see and hear, unfortunatly i dont like what i've seen or heard.

And yep, looks like my initial reaction to the console is still true... I guess I'll have to change the logo on the win button though, now that they've changed the name.

The name"revolution" would be near impossible to pronounce in japanese.[

The wii is either going to be a huge sucess or a a total flop. In a way, you can't blame nintendo for trying this. After all, they pretty much have been left in the dust by sony and microsoft, so they more or less have to try something different. By marketing to casual gamers/ nongamers they hope to capitalize on a market not yet signifigantly tapped by the video game industry. However, I remain highly skeptical that something like this could work. They essentially are trying to reinvent the wheel by creating this perverted remote. Nevertheless, I will give it a fair shot, if only by being a old-school nintendo geek. Nintendo has pulled itself out of the dust before, so there is a chance that they can do it again.

The big N could so easily go the same way as Sega. I too am an all-time Nintendo fan, but I feel they are losing their touch. Their weakspot is the games - whereas their good games are some of the best in the world, (Zelda, Perfect Dark, Mario etc) they fall by the wayside by not having enough, and taking too darn long to bring out those awaited" ones. Do they honestly think adult gamers can wait years between games while they bring out reams of kids games?

I will most likely "have a Wii" (if you'll pardon the pun) but I'll be waiting to see how it goes first.

I don't understand why so many people think that nintendo is doomed. If anything many people will consider the Wii as a cheaper alternative to the Xbox 360 or PS3. Personally, I'm thinking about going for a Wii to hold me over on the long trip to the PS3's price drop (puns are fun...). Also many of the titles sort of have that attention getting kind of thing going. For one, Super Smash Bros. Brawl is going to have Solid Snake. I regard this as a godly feat made by Nintendo because the MGS series is one of my favorite and they finally broke the first-party only barrier that they had established in SSB and SSBM. Also, some of the games coming up seem to have a more mature theme. Is there a darker side to Nintendo? I dunno, maybe we should all think about for a bit.

On a lighter note, "Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!" is one of my favorite things to say because my life is a roller coaster. Boy was that cheesy....

I have never been a strong supporter of Nintendo, owning an Xbox and all... I do find the ''Wii'' name relativly stupid and ear hurting, like most people, but I find theyr gameplay FANTASTIC! They will have lots of kids games as always, horrible graphiques comparet to other consoles, but at least, an original gameplay. The other day, I saw a trailler of some japanesse guy playing a sword game and zelda on the wii, and it sure looked fun smile.gif . Belive it or not, Wii will attract alot of new and young gamers. Although im not so sure about its succes in the mid-teen and adulthood marked, since, theyr games are just lame.

IMO the problem is that Nintendo never falls to the Dark Side. They always fall to the cheesy, Telly-Tubby side, and leave us lot out in the cold. I've probably said this before, but the days of games like Shadowman, Goldeneye and Perfect Dark - or even Eternal Darkness - have long gone.

That's true from a marketing/sales prospective but I would buy their games no matter how much kiddie shell they have coating it. However, a big problem is that they are trying too hard reach people that won't usally play video games in the first place. By trying to come up with a user-friendly contraption, they focus to much on the way you play games not the games themselves(awesome games[zelda, perfect dark, mario] have always been nintendo's strength, but their small market share is due to their "kiddie" games and not having enough breakaway games).

"Kid's games" or not nintendo has made some of the greatest games out there. Super Mario bros may have been "kiddie" but nobody can deny it's place in gaming history. Also, graphics have nothing to do with the quality of a game. The attitude placing too much attention on graphics is what is ruining the gaming industry today. Industries pour tons of money into making pretty, but ultimately crappy games. And what do you mean by "lame"? Are you saying that just because you can't pull the intestines out using havok physics and then dance around in a sea of blood while it rains shell casings? The game it self is what's important, not what it looks like.

Simple Observation you can go to electric shops supermarkets here youll see PS3 even discounted XBox 360 on the shelves with dust.
The Wii is still being grabbed as soon as come in none are on the shelves Nintendo have greatly understimated demand maybe hype etc but they certainly in japan at least having much greater sucess than sony.

And the Graphics are far from bad its like the old Hi Fi arguments at a certain level though the specs are much different your ears cant tell the difference.

Why are the Nintendo Wii so hard to find? Why aren’t they making more?

Because the Wii is in such high demand that as soon as a store gets a shipment, they're already off the shelves. Nintendo hit gold with this.
