I've finally made an evil, eee-vil bastard of a Khajiit and am looking to join the guild of murderers.

To all those who have already joined the DB, who did you kill to gain entry?

Spoilers:

I did the gray prince's quest and when I got around to fighting him, he sat there and cried... begging me to kill him. I cannot remember if that was the one, or towards the end of the fighters's guild quest I got buigged and credited for a murder there.
Marxist ßastard
Gray Prince.

...And yes, the "someone is watching" message struck me as a bit odd, seeing as how I did it in a stadium full of people.
Stampede
Ok that is very strange. I can only imagine that because the fight was so one sided, it was sheer murder!

Seriously though, it did not happen for me when I played the game the first time, but then that's because I had already killed a guardsman in a fight which triggered the message. When Lechance came for me, he soon joined the previously mentioned guardsman. Therefore cutting me off from the DB, who I was not interested in joining with that character.

Guess I will have to beef up my kitty a bit first.

Oh and Caffeine Rage, this is the spoilers section, so don't worry about posting anything that might reveal bits of the game. laugh.gif

Mine was a random person in the Imperial City - I was doing my thief thing and the bloke (whose man I didn't note, shows how much of a cold-blooded bastard I am) woke up mid-raid. Having slew him mightily I got the message, and then got the hell out of his house, expecting the psychic guards to show up.

I've only done the first quest DB on that pirate ship, and I quite enjoyed it. Its very different from the other "adventurer" quests in the game, you actually feel like you're being an evil sod.

i was awoken in the night by a member of the dark brotherhood and asked to take out some frail old dude on the outskirts of one of the towns. after completion they said they'd visit me again i did so and they directed me to the hideout.

gotta say though i ummed and arr'ed over taking that blokes life. is it me btw or will non of the gods heal you now? it seems being a contract killer stops you from going into a chaple of the nine and getting blessed.. they all keep telling me to repent!

I ended up killing the rival mage (can't remember her name) for the Mage Guild quest in Chorrol. I gave her the book she wanted and the head of the mage guild insisted I get it back from her. While she was hanging out on the street near the GReat Oak, I summoned a Dremora and fired an arrow (to mark her as the intended target) at her before hightailing it out of there to avoid the guards. The Dremora did the rest. I was rather disappointed when I checked her body later and the book wasn't on her. I guess the DB couldn't find my Dremora who did the actual deed so they settled for inviting me to join instead.

I hid in an alleyway in Skingrad and shot a begger in the throat as he passed by in broad daylight.

The guard in front of him watched as he fell over dead. Then as I came over and dragged his body over through a gate to the other side fo the fence. He even followed me. But just went on about his business.
ex128
Mine was a city Guard.

*Thieves Guild Spoiler*

I was running around as the grey fox and the guard spotted me, I hadn't saved in a while and would have been over burdened if I took the mask off >.<
Malchik
The first time it was one of the female gang in Anvil. I didn't wait to hear what they had to say. The second time it was a high level MG quest where you have to help the Count of Skingrad by disposing of some nuisances.

I just got the acceptance quest yesterday after sniping a sleeping mage by the waterside with my more... morally challenged character. tongue.gif To be fair he was a bandit for all I knew! Either way it was pretty handy as there were no guards anywhere nearby.

I killed Umbra for my invite. Not a bad deal all things considered, I get into the DB, pick up a quest item for down the road, and it also happens to be one of the best blades in the game.

I'm about halfway through the Dark Brotherhood quest line right now and it is a blast. Well worth that first murder (and all the other ones after that...).
Rhydderch Hael
My goody-two-shoes Breton used the Grey Prince as his blood-ticket to a Dark Brotherhood invite. But being a goody-two-shoes, he struck down Lucien when the talking was all over with.

My less-than-noble Imperial used the elder of the Odiil brothers as his blood-ticket into the Brotherhood. I partially failed the Killing Fields quest when the younger Odiil was killed in the fight and the father apologized for not being able to give me full payment due to burial costs...

...given that the kid never actually gets buried (he's still decorating the carrot crop with his ugly carcass!), I decided to show the cheap cretin what real grief is— I plugged the other son while he was working the field (beside the body of his brother).

I 'accidentally' got the invite when exploring a fort ruin. It was the first time I discovered an Adventurer. I simply saw this figure in leather armor standing in a dark passageway and concluded he was a bandit. Sniping with a bow, I was perplexed by the murder-message, reloaded the game, and struck up a conversation with the Orc instead.

Found an unusual way to join with my second character. I started the haunted ship quest in Anvil and started to fight the first ghost sailor on the ship when I realized I wanted a weapon that I'd left in my mansion in town. Left the ship and ran to get it. Turns out the ghost followed me off the ship and apparently started fighting with NPC's ont he waterfront. By the time I got back with my Daedric Warhammer and the ghost had been dealt with, there was a fight going on betwen some of the guards and other locals. The Argonian authoress (don't remember her name) snatched the cutlass of the ghost and apparently was then kiiled by one of the guards as she attempted to run off with it. (I was merely a bystander to all this.) Next time I slept I got a surprise visit from Mr. Lachance to recruit me for the DB. (And I didn't even get any bounty for the death even though I guess my character did let the ghost loose to start it all.)
Rhydderch Hael
For my latest character, I was mulling over just whom to send over to Sithis and earn the attention of the Night Mother. Then, I simply shrugged off one insult too many and struck down the 'innocent' with barely a thought into the consequence.

My Imperial Harbinger used Erana as his blood-ticket to the Dark Brotherhood, after finishing off the pertinent quest associated with her. Of course, before the quest was finished she was flagged with a crown icon and couldn't be killed— but afterwards... wink.gif

The logic dawned on me: this prissy old witch was too lazy to do some honest hard work and had to ask me to do the footwork for her? Oh, sure, she didn't know where to go. Well, neither did I. However, I asked around. I walked around. I found the danged place on my lonesome— something Erana should have done herself. But noooooo. She had some gullible chum fresh out of the Prison Sewer pipe to trudge his way into the hills for her. Well, phoo! No prize for her. I was happy to cheat her out of the deal.

And when she blew me off as some insignificant cur once I told her what I thought of her and her research, I answered with a sword blade through her ribs. Never mind the fact that a Guard was standing right there and that I had to lose half of my standing gold account to walk free— that High Elf ain't standing so high anymore!

Gray Prince.

I was trying to role-play my knight and NOT murder anyone, never getting the invite to the Dark Brotherhood. So, I couldn't kill the Gray Prince without getting that message ("someone is watching"). In order to defeat the Gray Prince without getting the murder on my tally, I hit him with a weapon coated with a "poison-over-time". Then I sat back and waited for the poison to actually eliminate the last hit points.

Sometimes it takes a few bottles of poison; just make sure the poison and not your weapon does the final blow. This technique has allowed me to kill a few people without it being classified a murder (just an assault). It helped in the Daedric Quest where you have to soul trap people - except for the argonian, who had poison resistance. It took some creative ideas to kill the lizard without murdering him...

With other players of less moral fiber, I usually lead monsters into Legion Patrol. Help the Legionnaire, but just enough that he just *barely* wins the fight... and then backstab his weakened body. ph34r.gif No bounty, probably little damage to yourself, and a decent set of armour and weapons.

Erana makes an excellent choice if your char swings that way (DB); if you go up to her apropos of nothing, before starting on any quests in the area, she tells you in no uncertain terms how useless you are. Oh, but later, if she learns that you're in a certain Guild, she sure changes her tune. All sickly sweet then, she is. Bleah, she deserves what she gets.

I accidentally killed Umbra, there's a post in here on the topic somewhere. I was trying hard not to kill, but he came out of nowhere...

You kill anyone, as long as their innocent (didn't attack you, can be evil, but just can't attack you first), then it says that the murder was seen by the Dark Brotherhood. Afterwards, sleep. Lucien Lachance will wake you up and tell you to kill an old fart, Rufio, at the inn of ill omen. It's funny to wake him up. What a deer! Kill him, and sleep at an inn or an owned house (Safe Locations). He'll wake you up again, and send you to the abandoned house in Cheydinhal, say Sanguine, my brother to the door, and talk to Ocheeva. You'll know what to do by now.

Mind you, I was inclined to waste Erana because my then-character had no investment in Destruction spells— she could give me nothing I really wanted. With other characters I've had that did use Destruction, the information gained would stay their hand from slaying her.

But no sensible excuse would spare Gogan and Maenlona, the couple in Anvil who send you on the Sirens quest, from my vengeance. Their explanation behind events makes no friggin' sense!

SPOILERS to "Siren's Deception"
.

.

Turns out that Gogan and Maenlona are undercover Anvil City Watch guards who were placed in town in the guise of a married couple in order to lure this very gang out and claim Gogan as a victim. This way, the City Watch would know who was in the gang and where they were based.

Well, behold! That's exactly what happens: Gogan gets snagged and robbed. Yeah for you, City Watch! You found out how the girls are doing it, and you know just where they're operating from! Time to arrest them, right?

WRONG! Let's forget about doing your job and wait around until some clueless traveler comes along, then deceive this innocent newcomer into becoming a victim themself. Then, our fearless City Watch will wait outside the farmhouse while our patsy risks his life and is forced to kill the gang in self-defense.

After which, once the hard part is already dealt with, then you step in and speak to the rattled traveler with that condescending, disaffected voice of yours... dry.gif

SPOILERS END

By the by, I've found an nice little sniper's spot in Anvil that sights the seat Maenlona is apt to sit in during the day. The roof of the Abandoned House (where "The Stranger" lives). Gogan is a little harder to track in his movements. I'm simply going to try my Journeyman-level Frenzy spell (which I named "Sheogorath's Wackslap") on him and hope the Anvil City Guard takes him down most painfully.

Chris - The bitch in red clothing in Gweden farm when I went to put an end of their schemes...she stood there as I slayed her friends and standed there afterwards, so I had to attack her to attack me, and it seemed to count as a murder...and that's how Chris got in.

Tori - No contest here, same thing with Gweden farm but when Lucien talked to me I gave subtle hints I was not interested and I attacked him before he went invisible, he was no match to Tori's ebony armor and glass shortsword...lol...later on after installing a mod to get into the DB sanctuary, I slaughtered everyone down there which I enjoyed..only the orc was the only reasonable challenge since everyone else had light armor or clothes on.

Bah. You folks just don't get it.

This is The Dark Brotherhood we're talking about here— not some two-bit marauder band. We need elaboration. We need appreciation of the stalk, the passions of the motive, and the details of the kill.

"I just started killing everyone"— is by no means the proper qualifier to gain entry into a blood cult of assassins. Mindless thuggery instead it be.
farlin
I killed the first person who turned to me and said, "They say that if you kill someone, the dark brotherhood comes to you in the night. that's how they recruit new members." Than, in my next charactor, I killed an important guy in a quest where you need to only kill him and specificly not this other guy, who I also killed, breaking the quest.
Wrath_Of_Deadguy
The first time I ran through Oblivion, I got stopped by First Mate Malvulis whilst on the way to my brand new rickety shack- she informed me that if I ever set foot on her ship, she would kill me. Seeing as how I wasn't even thinking about going onto the ship at the time, I took that as a threat and cut her down the moment the conversation closed. It counted as a murder because she hadn't actually attacked me (I got off scott-free killing her shipmates when they attacked me after I ran her through). I chose to pay the fine and, since the fight caused me to level up, went back to the shack to sleep.

A certain Mr. Lachance barged in later that night... I did the quest because I believe in 100% completion the first time playing any new game, and it tickled me perfect when I found out that one of my assignments was to off the rest of the pirate crew. I killed just the Captain so I could get my bonus, but then I went back and systematically slaughtered every other person on the ship.

Every character since has been reloaded if I got an accidental murder, though- not necessarily because they aren't murderers (they aren't, but accidental killings still count as murder and accidents do happen), but because I don't like lugging around the Blade of Woe if I'm not going to do the DB quest anyway.

Casandra Serein is already a card-carrying member of the Brotherhood when she walked into the Leyawiin Fighters Guild Hall and consulted Sherina for some Blade training.

Sherina replied, in that extremely condescending Redguard voice of hers, that she only trains Fighter's Guild members. Now, the very reason Casandra refuses to join the Fighters' Guild is for their respect for Imperial law and their steadfast sense of morality— so just how in blazes do you think someone who opposes that is going to react to this little bit of rejection?

Cassie drew and made short work of this swordfighting "teacher", who then fled with a sliver of life and plaintively pleaded for assistance from Leyawiin City Guardsmen. Cassie finished her off and stomped on her corpse for good measure.

I just found out another easy way into the DB. Get a calm spell or scroll, strong enough to calm the monsters of your level. Then go into the arena, and shoot the spell on your opponent. He won't fight anymore, but you can't talk with him either. And since it's the Arena, you can kill your opponent without any trouble. And the next time you sleep..... wink.gif

My blood ticket happen in the most ironic of encounters, my knight Takimaru was confiscating goods in Roland's house after being accepted into the Order of Virtous blood. Needless to say, as I plundered my fill, ready to fence my weapons. An Imperial guard got wise and prepare to arrest me, rather then lose all the items to a lowly guard, I fought him, a few beers was needed to numb the pain of his silver blade. At midpoint of the battle, I disarmed him, leaving him at my blade's mercy. I slew him and has been wearing his armor ever since.

I killed some man in the Imperial City (can't remember his name). Later on I figured out that he was the one who hired the DB to kill Rufio.
