Full Version: What Is The Grab Key For?

Been playing the game for a couple of weeks now, and so far, I haven't found any use for the grab key (z). I've tried it on all different sorts of things and nothing happens. Am I missing something here? What am I supposed to "grab"?
Marxist ßastard
Get close to a light object or corpse, and put your crosshairs on it. Hold down the grab key while moving the mouse.

Havok will try its hardest to simulate movement in the direction you move the mouse in, originating from the point your crosshairs were on when you first pressed the grab key.

You can use the Grab Key to put Stuff into Display Cases or onto Tables, Desks... smile.gif

*frowns* don't even think about tormenting yourself with it!!! placing stuff with the grab key is hell!!!! It's actually useless apart from role-playing uses, since even if you use it to "hide bodies" your opponents will not react to them in the first place! Its single use might be to throw things around but you should use telekinesis for it as well!!!

Actually, soulblazer, I killed somebody in the Imperial City once, and one of the guards seen it, ran over, and yelled something about the dead guy, then decided it necessary to attack me <_<

It can be used to trigger traps though. Throw an item against the tripping rope... But yes, except for that it's pretty useless for "gaming".

OK, thanks for the help! I was trying to grab vines to climb out of a dungeon pit, and other actual useful things with the grab key, but I guess it seems more for aesthetics in the gameplay world. I also thought it was for combat, like some cool grab and throw move you could do or something.

Anyway, as non-vital as it sounds, I did have one particular instance a couple of nights ago when I could've used my new-found knowledge of the grab key. I was tromping cross country through the wilderness, and came across this beautiful spring pond in the middle of the forest, all pristine, clean and bright. Then out of nowhere a wolf attacks, I kill it, and its dead body falls out into the middle of the pond. Great, now there's a dead animal carcass floating around in this once beautiful pond, contaminating this natural pristine spring water (not really, but that's what it looks like). Kind of ruins the mood of the setting. Not that I'm going to backtrack into the wilderness and relocate the pond and remove the wolf carcass now that I know how, but for future reference should something similar occur, I'll know how to handle it.

And on an unrelated note, I'm knew to this forum, what's the difference between a reply to a post and a quick reply to a post?

Thanks all for your feedback!
MiNalien
No difference, except that fast/quick reply doesn't require you to load a new page, yet doesn't have all of the BBCodes and smilies that are usable shown.

I discovered a new, somewhat useful feature of 'Grab'. You are running through a ruin and find a cool sword, but when you pick it up, you become over-encumbered. You cant afford to lose any of you other stuff but you really want this sword. Drop it and grab it. Put it in your inventory when you have to go through doors (you can go thru doors while over-encumbered) and drop it again and grab it. Grabbing stuff does not effect your encumbrance.

Heh, I've done that before... That was a big haul of loot I got from the dungeon, too <_<

You may wish to use grab to hide weapons...

I have been burnt a couple times by enemys that deside to pick up that warhammer his friend dropped and that I didn't choose to throw into the water. Needless to say now adays if I can think of it, I will toss any unwanted weapons into a pit/pond.

Also, it's helpful for sorting thgouh a pile of bodies that died ontop of one another. I have also found use to drag a body along and use the staff of worms to make an ally during a tougher fight.

I've had to leave loot behing before too, and it sucks. Looking forward to someone doing a pack guar mod like they did for Morrowind, or a pack mule, or some beast of burden. I've noticed there's a couple of saddlebags mods for your horse, which would have the same effect. But for some reason, I like having a separate beast for my luggage.

Use zombies. Put all your goods on a corpse, and point Mannimarco's worthless rotting stick at it.

Hmm, haven't come across Mannimarco's worthles rotting stick yet. That's sounds much more intriguing than a mere pack mule. I'll keep an eye out for it.

You can use "grab" to manuver various items to spell out "HELP", etc. on beaches and stuff when you get stranded on an island...

- *Spoiler*

I tried using it to hide bodies in the Whodunit quest. Totaly useless as the remaining NPCs always know instantly when one dies... (quite aggravating)

I like the grab button because I like playing with physics

In the mainguest I had maglir (from the fighters guild) with me as I was supposed to have his help in a quest, but instead I was in oblivion and Maglir hit the lava and kept getting unconscious (dunno how to spell that word) so I used the grab button to save him out of the lava biggrin.gif

I'd never have enough patience to carry a body with me!!! it takes too much time plus I can't travel with my horse!!!
aleswigger there is a mod called ad&d portable hole. Try it out. You'll love it. In fact it creates a seperate room you ca enter from wherever you might be!!! (can't find the link but I use it plus there is a bag of holding instead try it out too.)

if you are trying to haul loot out of a dungeon or anywhere, and you are overencumbered when you hold it, drag the item then. to get past doors, pick the item up, and you can enter or exit while over-encumbered. outside/inside, just drop it again and continue.

i havent treied fasttraveling while holding an item with the grab key, maybe its worth a try

If you finish a big fight, often your defeated enemies drop weapons and shileds on the ground as they fall, so they aren't on the body when you loot them. Often, they fall on top of a weapon, and you can then use the Z key to drag the body around so you can grab the stuff. I've found (probably because I have been slacking on building up agility) that I tend to get disarmed a lot in Sigil towers. My strength and hand-to-hand are not bad at all, so I will frequently just beat the enemy up. Then I got to find my sword ... and dragging those bodies out of the way is very helpful in doing this.
