I've completed the temple quest and got the flamy swords. I've gone back to the throne room to let good King Helseth know that no one issues a death warrant on the grand master of the morag tong but he wants to talk to me about his "plans for me" and go talk to his mother. Well his mother doesn' say much and Helseth won't elaborate on his plans. Does he have any or should I just go kill the (legitimately) paranoid prick?

If you have completed Almalexia's quests and sought out Sotha Sil I think there is nothing further you can do for the King. His quests are all leading up to the need to infiltrate the Temple IIRC. Check out the UHS hint site to see if you've missed something out.
