Just wondering. Sisters in the military and I'm kinda leaning to it after I graduate High School. Thinking on going to the United States Air Force Academy or Norwich University in Vermont (Its a private Military Untiversity known for its Corps of Cadets.) Odds are I'll go to the later of the 2 because my sister went there. Although here boyfriend. (Odds are my soon to be brother-in-law) Went to the academy. My sister might end up going to Iraq in September. Not a positive yet but a possiblity.

Feel free to share your family's military history.

Have no intention to join the infantry, or any front-line force since I'd be crap under fire. Would hate to be an off-field officer since planning things bores the hell out of me. Guess that leaves me with waving sticks at landing planes...no thanks.

I don't really think so. I'm a lover not a fighter, as the old cliche goes. grin.gif

Not to mention I'm somewhat squemish. I don't think I could handle battlefield gore, not to mention I don't think I'm physically capable of littering another person's body full of bullets.

Oh yeah, and I'm way too lazy and unfit for the military training regeim. Also I'd be yelling those general's heads off and storming out within the first day as I don't react well to being screamed at without just cause.

So all in all... nope. I think I'm happy with my civilian status. tongue.gif

My family doesn't have a strong military history so far as I know, but I haven't delved into that too deeply yet. My Grandad was an RAF pilot during WWII but never got to fight in it due to medical complications. Which is probably a good thing as I might not be here today if he had, heh.

I'm terribly clumsy, and nearsighted.

Honestly, I'd be more of a danger to the rest of the team.
Abramul
I tend to blow myself up with rocket launchers.

Seriously, I have flat feet, and am rather medicated.

And in regards to my family's history; my grandfather was a British Commando in the pacific who worked as recon and relay...basically that means..

Y ----- x ----- Z

Where Y is the allies, x is my grandad, and Z is the enemy. His job was to relay troop movements back to the allies. Obviously his position would also be the first one that was over run if the enemy advanced.

My grandmother's first husband was decapitated in a POW camp by Japanese hosts.

Father was in the Navy, Grandfather fought in WWII. Myself? THe Military is a good way to pay for college, considering how expensive it is these days. But even then, it would only be as a last resort.

Relatives called up of course if you go back far enough. Not me. Never like the concept of having to do what you are told even if it's against your conscience. I think I could kill if I had to but I really wouldn't want to have to through my career.
NudieZippo
Well, My grandfather was a Soviet foot soldier in WW2 and thats about it for military. I always told myself that fighting is only good for a just cause. the current war in iraq will most definantly NOT have me fighting in it.

My old man fought in Angola for a long time, it never inspired me to enlist though, in fact it probably did the opposite. While I do admire the bravery of the soldiers who do enlist and I am thankful for what they do, I refuse to be sent to my death by some guy that I don't know from Adam.

However, I won't lie that I have toyed with the idea, if God forbid, I lost the people I cared about and the motivation behind it was strong enough, I might consider joining up with a defense force. In my ignorance I used to be pro-war, these days though I sort of see it as a pointless waste of life and resources.

Military history of my family is limited to my greatgrandfather who fought in World War I and lost an arm and leg, if I remember correctly.

Joining the military would never be an option for me, and you don't know how happy I was when they told me that I would not be drafted (there are positive sides to a food allergy wink.gif ).

Did some research of my family.

My grandfather flew WWII. Not sure what though undecided.gif undecided.gif undecided.gif

My Father served in the Korean War a bit.

My uncle served in the first Gulf War Operation Desert Storm as an Apache Pilot.

Thats all I know right now.

My granddad fought the germans during WWII, still I wouldn't ever go near the recruitment office.. mostly because I'm a coward and would be scared shitless by even watching someone with a weapon move in my direction.

I wanted to join the Queens millitary but i have ashtma, i trained real hard too got real fit and had loads of endurance i hadnt had a ashtma attack in 1 and a half years i was strong as a bull well made and could run for england, i wanted to join the duke of boots but when i went to the recruitment office in sheffield i talked to the sgt things went well then i told my past medical history, he said he would talk to his superiors and see if they could get me in the back door but they couldnt, you see the damn public sector in england believes ashtmatics to be invalid, yet they expect us to work in factorys and foundries, it makes no sence. I would have been a good soldier, im bitter as hell over it the rule should be changed i was told come back after four years with out ashtma and we will accept you fat lot of good thats gonna do me now they dont recruit you after thirty.

So heres to you matey i hope you get into the army and do real well for yourself just remember to stay sharp and trust no one except your friends and in this day and age watch them too.
I wish you all the luck in the world and hope you see the world and enjoy what you see. From England. cool.gif

I did 6 years in the Royal Military Police, served in Cyprus and the UK with a few trips to Germany, Gibraltar, Afghanistan and Iraq. I left because I could no longer, with good conscience, work for the Blair/Bush empire.

Had a fantastic time and learnt a hell of a lot (including the skills which put the beer in the fridge now I am a civvy) and would do the same again.

It is difficult to explain to people the attraction of living in a sodden hole in the ground and eating army rations , but a quote from a Harley Davidson fanatic is a good analogy;

"I can't explain to people why I ride a Harley; to those who understand no explanation is necessary, and to those who don't, none is possible"
Tammo_Korsai
I'd only join the army if England was being invaded, because the Iraq war just an excuse to grab the oil and make money, and I'd crap myself under fire and probaly fumble with a grenade and get killed.

When my Dad was finishing high school, he had qualifications in engineering and stuff, so the army wanted him to join, they offerd him $1000 in cash on the spot, they siad they'd pay for university, they kept nagging him for three months, he simply refused.
