Over the past 24 hours or so the Washington file server has been experiencing problems. The system has entered "read-only" mode which normally suggests a disk problem as it means that new files uploaded over the past 24 hours (and from here on until the problem gets fixed) cannot be written to the server but old files from before that time can still be downloaded. I am working to sort the issue with my Washington server provider and will try to keep you all updated.

Not to spark conspiracy theories but the premium file server is not affected by this problem.

Update at 11:25 GMT: the normal file server is now back in operation and working again. Thank you to everyone for their patience and support during this time.

Update at 01:10 GMT: the hard drive has been replaced in the file server and the OS has been reloaded. The 60GB of Fallout 3 files are currently being transferred over to the new hard drive from a backup server which is going to take some time. In the mean time I'm going to go to bed, what with it being 1am, and I'll be up in the morning to add all the necessary server forks, tweaks and patches to get the server running again, and hopefully the file transfer will have finished by then too. Hopefully the server will be back up by midday GMT.

Update at 20:20 GMT: after doing a disk check of the server the hard drive is heading for a full hardware failure. As a result the hard drive will have to be placed and the 60GB or so of Fallout 3 files on the site will have to be tranferred over to the new harddrive. Ergo the server will probably be unavailable for a further 12 - 18 hours, depending on how long it takes the server provider to replace the hard drive and do an OS reload. Thank you for your patience at this time.

Any ideas on when downloads will be available again?
Lucid_Dementia
If their like any other server provider between 1-24 or more hours. So they may be awhile.
lothos1
If its available for read only, how come downloads are not being allowed right now?
Bond123
I tried to download something about midnight last night and there were 906 down loaders on the server...and it wouldn't allow me to download.

Could the site have been under attack...the mos I ever find is around 250 at any one time.
taitai907
Hmmmm...I never considered that the site could be under attack, but I did find it weird that there were more than 1000 members on one server last night.
lordbelfast
900 requests or so is not uncommon.
Verbal Earthworm
Steam are now selling Fallout3 for less than half-price.

that means there are more players who want to download mods.

membership must be increasing in a parallel manner.
grsmhiker
Conspiracy or no I just went ahead and upgraded my membership. I've probably downloaded several gigabytes over the last few months so I figure it's about time I gave something back. Keep up the good work!

You guys ever considered swapping from Namecheap.com to 1and1.com They provide a better service for cheaper yearly. Plus domain and transfers and so on. Should look into it guys. ^^

EDIT: On top of that, they give you free vouchers for google adword, MS adcenter, Yahoo Marketing, and citysearch.

Here, check them out if your intrested. I just would like to see the site move a bit faster for everyone if ya know what I mean. =P

I have updated the news post with the latest information.

As far as server providers go Name Cheap are just my registrar and do not host any of the sites. 1&1 are more of a generic web host and are not good for high power, high bandwidth and highly customised sites that require lots of optimisation and server access. Thank you for the heads up though.
ArkyFox
It's cool.
ELement13
You should realy make 2 free servs not 1. Also 150kbs limit not very good, but i understand for what its done.

And the last thing that i rly dont like. I dont think that option to view a lot mods for 1 page is the thing for what we must pay money.

I cant wait any more so much time offline, if u had only an alternative link.
Br00t kilre208
I agree. I think you should add another free server that somehow had a data link to the current free one, so when things like this happen, people can still access the data on the server.

However, if it costs a substantial amount of money, i understand that would not be possible. just put it into consideration, and maybe look into it.
Thanks
delijoe
You know you really should open up the premium server to all while the free server is down. There are many mods (such as the newly released version of MMM) that are only available here and I shouldn't need to pay $5 to download a free mod.
Snowgoose
It's amazing how used we all are to the luxury of a free service that while the Nexus guys are busy trying to restore that free service (installing / rebuilding / configuring / re-patching / verifying / restoring backups / verifying / bringing back online / checking etc etc) we start demanding that they start reconfiguring their pay-only service as well.

Have a little patience & show a bit of appreciation for their efforts eh?

The problem is that when modders use one site (this one) as the exclusive site with which to host mods, it's a huge inconvenience when that one site goes down.

How hard could it possibly be to allow use of the pay server for all for the day or so that the other server is down?
Dark0ne
It bemuses me that a non-premium member recommends opening up the server specifically set aside to those people who financially support this community for all the people who don't.

Uhu - obvious troll is beginning to look obvious so not wanting to get dragged into a pointless arguement with anyone, I'll just re-iterate what Verbal Earthworm said:

**Kicks up his heels on the ottoman and leans back lightening up a smoke** " Herm.., gives me time to go read the other posts and learn a bit about modding".

I am very thankful for the free service and waiting while others spend their valuable time repairing / reprogramming {what ever it is techies do}, for us, is not without my gratitude.

It shouldn't bemuse you really. It's typical human "everyone owes me" mentality.

Myself I'm happy to wait until the issue is sorted. I can't financially support the community due to economic issues, but I do try to support it in other ways.

Such as:
Reporting trolls / flamers / spammers / author harassers / rating abusers.
Helping users to get mods working correctly (even if the mods are not mine*).
Helping authors troubleshoot issues they are having.
Helping requesters to learn how to fulfil their requests themselves by writing step by step guides.
Giving authors feedback on their mods.

* = Few people download my mods anyways, and those that do rarely rate or comment. Then there is the most popular variant of the Boltgun mod that I developed that only has my name on it... (sharing a filepage sux) sad.gif

The users of my mods are starting to get itchy feet sad.gif Any ETA on a fix guys? Ofc we are all thankful for the free service and will wait as long as it takes to fix the dodgy HD.
Dark0ne
The hard-drive has been replaced and the OS is in the process of being installed/reloaded. After that I need to add all my custom forks, tweaks and fixes to the server and transfer the 60GB of files over from the backup servers. However, you can upload your update and it will be available as soon as the server becomes available again (as well as to the premium members straight away); it won't get lost and you don't need to wait.
Frodric
well between the time stamp of DarkOne posting the eta and now I would say have them check again tomorrow.
the_mango55
It's ridiculous to demand free servers to be open, and I'm not too upset at waiting for this to be fixed (but still, HURRY PLZ smile.gif ).

However, this points out a flaw in the FO3 mod community. We are too reliant on this awesome site, hardly anyone bothers to mirror their files anywhere else. Perhaps more modders should consider putting mirrored files on Filefront or some other service.
ELement13
Its good that theOneWhoIsDark does his work well. A lot of progress news. We are not lost in time =D.

PS 2 free servs IS NOT A LUXURY. TES Nexus has it.

I agree... but unlike TES, FO doesn't have a lot of good sites to upload to. The only other one I even know of is Planet Fallout... I do upload there, but I don't like it much for various reasons..
buddah
Thanks for the update, not back to the file admin for me! ! ! !

I created lots of work for myself to keep busy and out of trouble.

As I mentioned earlier, Filefront.com works great for file mirrors. It's not specifically fallout related, but if it's linked to in the mirrors section on this site it doesn't make a difference.

I suppose many people don't like using mirrors because they think it could cut down on their reported number of downloads here.

/wish Premium credit would activate on my account lol tongue.gif

Can someone give me Premium Account for a hour? =)
I

the day i decide to register is the day the servers go down, b a d l u c k, this really sucks

I hate to say it, because it shows what a nincompoop I am. I had no clue that you paid for these sites, servers and whatnot out of your own pocket. When I couldn't download my file, it forced me to read about why and all that. I deeply appreciate the past year or so of free downloads and apologize for being such a bum. I've got my premium membership now and I'm happy to chip in a bit of cash for the cause. Thanks for being such a kind-hearted soul to all us bums who don't think about someone actually having to pay for all of this!
taitai907
Soooo...I was wondering...how, exactly, do you go and repair hardware failure that occurs thousands of miles away? Do you have to E-mail someone to do it?
ELement13
Monsuun. I'll tell u 1 thing. THIS SITE MAKES A LOT OF MONEY. And thats it, they work for money they get it, they spend some% to suport the servs etc.
Its free because it involves new ppl.
Just job.
Dark0ne
I've updated the original post with the latest news.

The server is maintained physically by technicians provided by the data centre and or provider themselves.

Thousands of hours I have spent here, the other other members of the staff as well. Our collective pay has been $00.00.

But he promised to double it this year. Our pay, is a simple thank you from Robin or any member of the community.

Speaking only for myself I consider myself privileged to be a member of the team here, the time and effort here is my contribution to the community in general, if I can help but one my time is well spent.

Thank you Robin.

After reading through this thread i was quite disgusted, but not really surprised, at how ungrateful and selfish some people are. I for one am eternally grateful for all the time and effort that's put into running and maintaining this site. I could go a rant but I'm not going to. Instead:

To all the staff and to the members of the community that are always willing to lend a hand, I'd simply like to say,

Thank You.

I went to download a mod.. I think it was last night or something.. and the window said something like 800 users. "I'll download this later," I thought, figuring something was either wrong, or that for whatever reason the server was more than twice as busy as I'd ever seen it.

Sad to see it was the former. If I weren't unemployed currently, I'd donate some. Nexus is definitely on my IOU list.
Erafox
ok sad.gif , thanks for the work you do boys !
