I like many others are wary of downloading programs off the net without knowing at least a bit about it first.

If it is as good as you say, why not tell us a little more about it first?

RPG Maker is quite a well known piece of software. I've heard it's quite contraversial, but I've never really explored it enough to understand why.
Stampede
Contraversial in what way? Now I'm interested.
Dark0ne
Something about copyrights. Perhaps the people using the software were putting copyrighted material (i.e. LOTRs) into the game, or perhaps the actual software is suspect. Really don't know.

EDIT: I thought he was talking about RPG Maker, not Toolkit. Sorry, just used to the lingo. >_>

A ha! A topic I know much about.

RPG maker 2000, 2003, and XP are produced by Enterbrain, who are a Japanese company. Originally all the versions were not translated and cost around 100$ US to buy. There are several translations, but the best one is RPGAdvocate's. You can find his site by googling phylomortis.

I was into using RPG Toolkit a few years back... pretty cool little program. It's a bit like a more advanced version of RPG Maker, really. RPG Maker is the easier choice, but RPG Toolkit has all the advanced options such as creating your own custom NPC graphics within the program and a very detailed programming language that you can do pretty much anything with (even more so than with RPG Maker I believe). But it is more difficult to get the hang of.

Also, from what I've seen, RPG Maker communities have been less active as of late and it's been hard to get hold of copies of it (I guess the later versions are retail-only, or something), where as the RPG Toolkit site still appears to be thriving (must admit I was surprised by that).

So I guess the suspicious was based around adolescents who couldn't afford the price having pirated versions?

Possibly. I'm not really sure, I just know Don Miguel (the primary translator guy for the RPG Maker) ran into problems of some sort (probably legal) and had to cut off all downloads for the 2001 and later editions of the RPG Maker sometime 2-3 years back. 2000 and earlier are still there, though.
