Hey Guys!
Just thought I might find out what people are listening to these days. I'm somewhat out of the loop. Nobody seems to have ever heard about 50% of what i listen to.
Just post some of your favorite songs!
Here's a few of mine:
The Mark Has Been Made - NIN
Stockholm Syndrome - Muse
Go to Sleep - Radiohead
Slow Hands - Interpol
Clubfoot - Kasabian
And that's only a few...

There was a "currently listening to" thread a little while back, but I guess it's been long enough to warrant a new thread.
I've heard of all the stuff you're listening to.
Currently enjoying some heavier music at the moment;
Killswitch Engage
Chimaira
Pantera
Extol
Unearth
Machinehead
Trivium
Bullet For My Valentine
Atreyu
Then when I want to mellow out I'll listen to;
Avenged Sevenfold
My Chemical Romance
Funeral For A Friend (recommend new album)
36 Crazy Fists
That's my playlist at the moment.

A friend told me to listen to Avenge Sevenfold.
So what's your opinion on them?
PS: Pantera? Seriously?

First album was poor, second album was bloody amazing and I'm divided on the third. Their latest album only came out this week. Unfortunately the singer borked his voice box up royally with all the screaming and now can't do it, so the latest album fringes on EMO in my opinion. But it's worth checking out.

Lol, I can remember how I had to cope with that for three or four days after being to a Vader concert - and that wasn't even grindcore ^^
At the very moment I'm listening to Moonsorrow - Verisäkeet. Immortal, Darkthrone, Taake, Watain, Nocte Obducta, Grabnebelfürsten, Blind Guardian, Falconer, Kataklysm, Dornenreich and Endstille make up my all time favourites.

That's because metal owns. True metal, that is. None of these nu-metal bands like Slipknot or Korn. I mean heavy stuff, like old Metallica, Motörhead, industrial metal like Rammstein and Ministry. Thrash and speed metal especially. You ever need something to keep you awake? Coffee is worthless - just throw on Damage Inc., Feuer Frei, Leper Messiah, or Disposable Heroes. That'll keep you up.
I also forget to mention the punk shtuff I listen to. Again, true punk. None of this emo/pop punk sh*t. Dead Kennedys, the Ramones, Sex Pistols, etc...

I disagree. (Well, I don't listen to grindcore, I listen to death metal, but it should be the same at this point.) You have to listen to this music loudly if you want it to affect you. Just don't listen too long.

Metallica and "old-Metal" bore the hell out of me. They do a half hour set down the local Rock club of "old-Metal" and there's nothing there to thrash to. Nu-Metal gets me going (physically, not sexually) a lot more.
Don't start giving me the "your nu-Metal wouldn't be here without my <insertband> old Metal band". I don't care, just because they were the originals doesn't mean they're more skilled in what they do, or that they're better.
So Phuff on that!

I just got some new songs by Kasabian and I like them
Ben Folds sings some funny songs, especially his cover of the Snoop Dogg song "B*tches Ain't Sh*t" It's funny because it's done Ben Folds-piano style
And I almost forgot...LISTEN TO TUBULAR BELLS by MIKE OLDFIELD. it's amazing

That might be because complex music is not for everyone to understand. But of course, there will always be pop with guitars, witch can get you both going (physically, not sexually) a lot more.

Complex? Did you just say 'complex'?

There's nothing complex about an extended guitar solo - which is a pity, because in that case it might be less mind-numbingly boring.
No, really. Metallica are about as complex as a 4 piece jigsaw puzzle.
If you want complexity, look at some classical music.
draighox
Jun 16 2005, 03:06 PM
Extended string? Do you mean playing style or guitar type? In either case, the complexity is in:
1) Writing the solo. You can write a catching (simple) melody for vocal and supporting/bass/rythm guitar, but not everyone can write a good guitar solo, because it has to be quite long and can't repeat itself like vocal or supporting/bass/rythm guitar.
2) Playing it. Anyone can play the same chords again and again to support vocal, but playing solo (especially speed solo) is a completely different thing.
And I'm not talking about Metallica, because I have listened to only a few of their early songs, and nowadays they're crap, no offence.
And sure, I'd listen to classical music if I wanted that much complexity and no guitars. No, thank you, I'm quite happy with hard rock and progressive and death metal.
Dark0ne
Jun 16 2005, 06:16 PM
Most GOOD guitarists can do solo's off their head. It's really NOT hard. Two of my best friends are amazing guitarists and often just walk in my room, pick up my guitar and play something completely random while we chat.
From experience I can say it's a lot harder to connect with three other instruments (vocals, drums, bass) and keep in time when strumming multiple different chords in seconds than it is to do solo's.

In no particular order, not even alphabetical;
Nirvana
The Ramones

Black Sabbath
Motörhead
Neil Young
Manfred Mann's Earth Band
Pearl Jam
Soundgarden
Pink Floyd
Led Zeppelin
That's it.

Wow, this guitar solo thing is getting heated, just make sure no one winds up dead...'cause if they do, we won't know where to stash the body
Roight, anyway, as of the moment, i'm listening to:
Could Well Be In - The Streets
Doin' Time - Sublime
Somebody to Love - Jefferson Airplane
Girl - Beck
And everything off of the Out of Exile CD by Audioslave

As a lover of music and a musician myself,(I play the tenor sax, and piano) I think it depends on what musician your listening too. There are some complex rock bands out there, Shadows Fall plays some awesome stuff, and complex classical. And to some talented musicians its all easy no matter how complex.

No, really. Metallica are about as complex as a 4 piece jigsaw puzzle.
So this guitarist rings up his friend one night and says: "I've er um I think like maybe perhaps like I've broken a record!"
So the friend says: "Geez, man. What is it?"
"I've just like er um done this four piece jigsaw like, you know, right and it's only taken me like three weeks, right!"
The friend, who being a pianist is more tuned in to the realities of life says. "How can that be a record, man?"
"It says like on the box 'two to four years'.
Interestingly the concept of a solo piece in the middle of concerted music is found throughout most types of music including Jazz, Folk, Classical. In operas of old the soloists had long, florid, solos in the middle of the arias. Surely a good guitarist can make a solo interesting. I am not a great fan of all the derivatives of pop and rock but I enjoy listening to Mark Knopfler for instance not only with Dire Straits but some of his film music too.

It might not be complex to play guitarr but you still gotta be talented to write a good solo or riff, like stairway to heaven. A song dosent need to be complex to be good.

3. Thin Lizzy
4. Jimi Hendrix
5. Misfits (the older albums, nowadays, they are just crap)

In that case you dont know anything about guitarr solo's. The end solo in Stairway To Heaven is perfect.
The solo in Ozzy Osbournes - Mr Crowley is a very good example to.
As I said, a solo doesnt need to be super complex to be good, I think many rate guitarr solo's depending on how fast they are, cause that makes it complex, right?

playing like 1000 tones as fast as possible, up and down.

*yawns*
Some people just can't seem to accept that others might not like their kind of music - it has nothing do with 'knowing about guitar solos' or 'understanding'.
I consider guitar solos to be self-gratification on part of the guitar player. Someone else's self-indulgence holds little appeal for me.
Musical taste is a personal thing - there's no 'right' or 'wrong', no 'better' or 'worse', and it has nothing to do with 'understanding' or 'keeping it real' or whatever - what it comes down to is whether you like certain music or not.
So kindly allow me to detest Led Zeppelin without trying to convince me of the merits of a song I consider to be absolutely awful.

Adras, don't you find that listening to the radio introduces you to new kinds of music, or to bands you hadn't heard before? I've recently discovered a good radio station which plays a lot of little-known stuff that I probably wouldn't have heard anywhere else.
Having found a few radio stations which play the kind of music I like I tend to listen to them quite a lot.

I love listening to the radio - I have hundreds of bands and songs to look up because of it. Unfortunately, the only station that really played indie bands and the like was shut down less than a year ago...and replaced by a hispanic station.
Anyway, I agree that music is all in personal taste. I'm not a fan of guitar solos during which you have time to go make a cavewich (props to Shin

) and return before it's over. On the other hand, I do like some guitar solos that are short but sweet, such as Saul Hudson's in "Slither."
Bands I forgot to mention:
-Richard Cheese: lounge covers of heavy/hard rock songs by bands like RATM, NIN, etc... Funny as sh*t.
-Rancid
-The Aquabats
-Techno (Mostly Euro-House/Trance)
-Classical: Check out Renee Gruss. Modern guy, but Antares is brilliant.

You can be sure of my unlimited envy. The quality of radio broadcasting seems to differ vastly between various countries, the radio stations I could listen to all play the same Pop/Hip Hop-stuff (to be more precise, they have virtually identical play lists), with the exception of some public stations which play either classic music or that awful kind of Schlager and Volksmusik.

iTunes: DI.fm.... Techno's good stuff. They have tons of different radio stations to check out.
Launch.com also has great readio. It's Yahoo, but it's pretty nice. You rate albums, songs, and artists (individually); you can also rate music genres, etc... Based upon your ratings, they play bands, songs, and albums you rate highly, and often play music that fits your likes. If you don't like a song, album, or artist, you can block it from being played again. And you can skip songs. It's brilliant.
